90k mile 2016 VW Golf losing about 4 quarts of oil in 1200~ miles of driving. Over the phone my mechanic told me cars probably toast, he's not able to look at it for another week or two. How fucked am I /o/? If it's worn rings can I ride the car until it dies if I keep it topped off?

Basically you needed to check and add oil every time you filled the gas tank.There was a particularly cursed revision of the engine that also had problems with the turbocharger and timing chain tensioners (I think the turbo could also cause an oil leak if it broke, though you'd probably notice that quickly).

>>28601816Oh, that's what it was, VAG at it's finest. I've driven one in Germany owned by a friend, less than 40k km on it. German dealership told us 1 liter per every 1000 km is considered normal. It consumed even more on the Autobahn though, probably because of the higher revs.
>>28601667I'm surprised. I have a 2017 Golf and just rolled past 100k miles. And it's running solid and no issues, I haven't even had the carbon build up around the valves and ports problem yet. It might be because mine has a 1.8L engine and not the 1.4L that's been a problematic engine for VW.

>>28602518The early EA111 1.4 TSI engine was definitely dogshit. The later EA211 1.4 wasn't completely terrible. The 1.5 derived from that is ok-ish from what I hear.They all have way too much plastic in them and have been known to occasionally spill coolant or oil because some shitty seal or cover failed somewhere. Even the valve cover in some of them is plastic, and can warp if the engine gets hot enough.I don't think their current engines start burning their oil nearly as easily as the older ones, but you're kind of screwed if they do because according to VW, around 0.5 liters/quarts per 600mi/1000km is perfectly normal and within tolerances.
>>28602518the golf idk, it was like a roughly 2010 vehicle, the polo is a 1.2l i think and a few years later.Both have been expensive to maintain, doing the belts and water pumps or something but nothing crazy other than the golfs "coils exploding", which apparently cost 3k AUD to fix like 5 years ago. I just remember my mom telling me that, maybe it was the ignition coils? seems expensive but maybe if they were OEM parts + mechanic scamming.It's more that you have to (or ordinary people do anyway) have to take them t o a dealer or specialty european mechanic who will rape you + pay for european parts upcharge. And I think the thing people say about preventive Maintenace being required and things that shouldn't be wear parts being wear parts is true.
