What dash cams are you running in your vehicles? And are there any dash cams that will allow you to put the recorder part somewhere else instead of have it built into the camera? I live in a high crime area and don't want people to just smash and grab the whole unit. What do you guys use on your cars?
>>
edit: I've asked in /g/, but people in /g/ don't really own cars and the thread always dies with 1 or 2 replies.
>>
Street Guardian allegedly does this.
Many 360 vision/remote mount/truck/motorsport cameras have separate memory units.
>>
I had a similar desire but for a different reason: I wanted the screen itself somewhere other than right behind the main camera. And to avoid having a nest of wires all going to my windshield instead of to a unit tucked away somewhere else. There was also an assumption that I could use storage that was a bit faster or more robust than micro-sd.
Naturally I could not find anything that did all of that nonsense. Viofo A329 seems closest but I still haven't got it yet.

Anyway, BlackVue DR970X has a main unit you can hide somewhere. There may have been one other brand but I forget who or it may have gone into commercial territory. I usually skipped anything that was still only doing FHD.

I think another thing to be mindful about is where you are placing cameras. Right on the windshield is probably easy to notice but your view might not be great if you try to mount it on the headliner.

I'd never use a dashcam because police can seize the footage if they want to prove you were speeding or whatever. Delete the footage? Enjoy an evidence tampering charge.

My sister works for a car insurance company.
Sue recommend buying a dashcam that records front and rear.
She said 1/2 her calls are people lying and scamming.

Anon....

>She said 1/2 her calls are people lying and scamming.

Or they hit you and flee the scene because what they were driving or riding was stolen. If they hit you in the rear and drive off, most people have no video since they only have a front facing camera.

>>28602411
I've heard viofo makes good dashcams but I don't have one so can't vouch for them personally
>>
>>28602465
THANK YOU. I've asked this question about 4-5 times on /g/ and this is the first promising response I've received. My friend bought 2 dash cameras because we live in an insurance scam heavy city, and his car got broken into within a week and they stole both of his dash cams in a smash and grab.
>>
>>28602489
What if you take out the sd cards and destroy them before they can seize them? Carry a couple of destroyed sd cards and throw it into the pile. They can't prove the ones you destroyed had footage of the crash.
>>
>>28602580
This is what I want it for. My city is plagued with car insurance scams. My friend bought 2 dash cams, but they just broke his windows and stole both of them so that's why I at least want to be able to run the cables under the dash board or something so if they want to steal it they have to work for it. Most smash and grabs are quick.
>>
>>28602489
So you'd never use a dashcam because you're the reason other people get dashcams?
>>
>>28602411
I have a viofo a129 duo and it does the job

Those are some pretty niche features, I'm not surprised you are having issues getting answers. I know you don't want to hear it but if you're in such a horrendous area that "people" regularly smash and grab $50 dash cams you should probably leave. Dash cams basically have a have a set form factor of a thing that sticks to your windshield with a screen on it. It sounds almost like you need something custom, just a little camera like an FPV drone camera at the top of your windshield and a wire that runs across your headliner and down the pillar to a recorder.

I have like 5 of these. Bought them 5 years ago though and the amazon listing I purchased them from is dead. They're good, decent picture quality, have lasted even in very hot cars. They don't have a park mode though, unless you connect them to a power source that doesn't shut off with the car.

>>28602489
You're a fucking cottonpicker tier retard. Every dash cam I've ever used can switch audio and speed recording on and off. 15 seconds on a search engine would have enlightened you to the fact that you can do it.
>>
>>28602885
I'm revising my statement because I remembered a few things.

The fuse taps that came with the hardwire kit kept coming loose.
I'm not sure if that's Viofo's fault or my car's fuse box.
I ended up buying new fuse taps from AutoZone or Advance Auto Parts (I always get them mixed up).

Also, it would randomly turn off for a while but I think updating the firmware fixed it.

Lastly, the app fucking sucks and the wifi chip in the dashcam is incredibly slow.
I always end up having to take the SD card out whenever I want to save something instead of using the app.
Not the biggest deal but if I'm in a situation where I need my dashcam footage I'm probably irritable and this gets really annoying. I think next time I'm in the market for a dash cam I'll splurge on something more convenient.

/g/ might tangentially know about webcams, but those nerds love talking about boring shit like coding or antique computers. Its odd.

I think I saw a couple youtubers about a year ago review a LOT of them. Turns out theres only like 2 different dashcams out there, all the different brands are still the same camera and 'operating' system with minor differences otherwise. Basically they're all kinda shit and only good at catching someone bumping into your car in a parking lot because if your window is dirty or wet, cars moving over 25mph, or lighting isn't great you can't read the license plates anyway. Just check the dashcam clips on youtube, they're all nearly useless for grabbing a plate.

Otherwise they're fine to show the other driver did swerve into you, or did run the red light, just get whichever one you like and can afford.
>>
>>28602413
/g/ is more of a consumer cpu/gpu boards. They arne't all that interested in actual technology
>>28602411
I have a viofo (front and rear facing). It works. My only complaint is getting videos/pics off it is kind of annoying, but then again I never have to access it so not a big issue. Pretty much what >>28603274 said. The wifi connection and app kind of suck.
>>28602489
Most dashcams allow you to turn off GPS and audio.
>>
i hate fuckin with cameras so much
>>
>>28602411
I'm happy with the redtiger I got off amazon. I also got the hardwiring kit and the rear camera, but I think I messed up the hardwiring because it doesn't stay on with the key off. I haven't bothered trying to fix it.
the image quality kinda sucks at night, I was expecting to be able to read license plates but it's too grainy.
>>
I'm a cuck, so when I got my new Toyota I just paid the high price for their front and back.

here's an example of the video quality at night. I was stationary here. the weird reflection is my melting dashboard reflecting the street lamp. you can see the license plates on the vehicles across the street are illegible. any still taken while in motion is even worse.
I did read something about reducing the resolution but raising the framerate helping with that, but I don't think it'll make a difference.

and here's a daytime still, the car in the opposite lane is in motion and the license plate is still mostly legible.

It doesn't matter because police departments utilize picrel technique

Sony literally makes most of the world's sensors, followed by Samsung. Who tf else are they going to use lmao?

Linuscucktips is a sensationalist retard along with many other yters + those vids are like 2-3 years old now, you really need to step up your research game dude. Starvis 2 has been out for like a year and has very good quality with real 4k/60 FPS. It isn't 2015 anymore grandpa.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQjXsS7VK2I

People like you really do need to shut the fuck up about things they have no idea about, as if you know anything.

Maybe get a newer dashcam instead of sneeding about your 5 fucking YEAR OLD dash camera and it's slow features. It's literally like $200 now for excellent front and rear camera footage.

JEsus christ how retarded can you be, you ever thought about using hot glue to hold the fucking fuse taps, or maybe better yet get some good quality ones? God I can't believe you're such a nigger. Niggers have access to a wealth of information yet they're still retarded.
>>
>>28603274
>fuse taps
Imagine using these
>>
>>28604869
>you really need to step up your research game dude.
like okay bro, I'll keep on the cutting edge of useless tech like dash cam innovations. I'll updoot your post for encouraging me to research some shit that just doesn't matter.
>>
>>28604896
what am I supposed to do, solder it to the battery? I just want to record accidents and funny occasions, guy
>>
>>28608070
Nope, you don't use solder in a car (unless working on PCBs), you crimp instead, because solder in free-hanging wires gets loose from vibration. Probably the same thing that happened with your shoddy fuse taps.

Normally people connect DVRs to a suitable 12v source in the overhead console, optionally to something that gets 12v only with aux power/ignition on, if the DVR has support for that (Viofo does).
>>
>>28602465
Do you know which model in particular or are all models camera + wire to recording/sd card unit? There's like 3 two channel models.
>>
Wiring a dashcam seems like it'd be a bitch. No I don't wrench because I don't want to risk fucking things up on my only car.
>>
>>28602489
This is entirely solved by not being a nigger.
>>
>>28609272
How old are you?
>>
>>28609330
1488 years old.
>>
Wolfbox G900.
You need to get used to it though
