Would you rather get hit with a baseball bat or the wide side of a 2x6? Also if you run over a child there's enough ground clearance for the kid to pass safely underneath as long as they avoid the diff pumpkin. If you do that with a vehicle with normal ground clearance they're just going to get ground into the pavement.
