Steering is very noisy, creaking like old floorboards. Doesn't do it all the time though. When it is doing it it makes noise whenever I turn the wheel, including when stationary, but also tends to make noise when driving straight

Been doing this for probably over a year now so I guess nothings about to blow up but it is a bit disconcerting. Anyone know what the cause might be?

My Cadillac CTS does that, there is a rubber bushing somewhere in the steering shaft which is worn. Only option is to replace the shaft or spray some lube on the bushing for a while

The more asspainsive one can likely also go lower and higher

You gotta peep da specs to see if it's low enough to get under your car, and high enough to allow you room to werk

The one on the left is a low profile jack, meaning the jack itself isn't nearly as tall as the one on the right. Some cars are low enough to the ground that you may not be able to get the right one under them, and thelo profile jack is also a lot easier to use with the longer handle.

Lifetime lubricated tie rods/ball joints are at the end of their lifetime and are dry now so they squeak/creak. You hear it more from tie rods but both can do it. Somebody's gonna have to do an inspection under there and see what all needs done.

Not necessarily. You don't see it much after the Seventies but Ford used 2V/4V to describe the carburetor type and therefore engine power. The V stood for Venturi so a 2V was a 2-barrel and the 4V was a 4-barrel. (Yes, there were 6 and 8V's too even further back) So it would be more proper to think that the 2V/4V designation refers to valves on EFI vehicles instead of the blanket "mustangs".

I have the 2.5T version of the aluminum one. it's not low enough to get under my wrx and reach the central front jack point. I end up having to drive up on ramps anyway before using the jack. also, lowering the jack is rarely smooth and predictable. I have to turn the handle with the utmost care, and even then it can be jerky coming down.

Conventional wisdom tells me that short drives are bad for your car. I'm basically only going to use it on weekends now. How do I avoid problems from such intermittent use?

Short term there's not really much to worry about.
Keep the battery charged so it will actually start when you need it to, a trickle charger is best.
Change the oil every 6 months regardless of miles.
Conventional wisdom is to keep the tank full so the fuel doesn't have room to evaporate and it won't get a layer of sludge on the bottom. Won't matter though, gas takes years to get to that point and you'll still be cycling your tank more often than that even if you're just driving weekends. Don't be surprised if your fuel economy plummets though, cold starts suck a lot of fuel.

If this ends up being a long-term thing, keep your car in a garage. Cars that sit outside rust worse than outside cars that are driven daily.
Rodents are also often a problem, they see immobile cars as free real estate and can be incredibly destructive.

At some point you may want to evaluate how much you're driving and consider carsharing services if there are any available in your area. Renting a car once a week to get groceries may actually be cheaper than paying registration and insurance, depreciation etc. on a car that you barely use.

Probably. Also harder and slower to operate, probably shoddier, might not fit under your car if it's low enough. There is another type of jacks you might be interested in, they are generally cheaper, more compact and do not require smooth floors: hydraulic bottle jacks. Their only disadvantage is they are slower, but $35 trolley jack isn't going to be fast either.

I also hope you have jack stands and wheel chocks as well, anon. Don't jack your vehicle up without them.

I drive pic related with a manual trans and I've been thinking lately that it provides everything I want in a car. It's fun to drive, I pay almost nothing to fill it up, maintenance and parts are cheap, it has clean and understated styling, the engine has plenty of power and torque for both city and highway driving - Are newer cars with more power or from European brands that much better than what I'm used to? Am I just talking out of very limited experience from driving shitbox tier cars?
