anyone else hate power steering? i didnt realise my last car (1989 mx5) didnt have it assumed it did because i always heard no power steering was really heavy. when i was test driving newer cars they all felt light and floaty and awful to drive ended up getting a 1994 ford fiesta with no pwoer steering it feels so much nicer to drive but my mum drove it and said it feels really heavy i had no idea its a heavy feeling it feels right to me

I hate it but it's supposedly necessary in modern cars.
My old 1999 Peugeot 206 had no power steering but it actually felt like I was driving a car. Whenever I drive in a friend's modern car the power steering is so over the top that it feels more like I'm playing a video game with a plastic steering wheel controller instead of actually driving a car.

>I drive in a friend's modern car the power steering is so over the top that it feels more like I'm playing a video game with a plastic steering wheel controller instead of actually driving a car
yeah its horrible right feels like youre not in control of the car
>>
I've only driven w/o PS on a '98 Suburban 2500 when the accessory belt snapped. It was more difficult to turn than I was expecting. I have tiny little twig arms. I'm A-ok with PS.
>>
Why wouldn't you want your car to be as responsive and nimble as possible? What possible advantages are there in a slow and heavy steering wheel?
>>
Depends on the car. Any random econobox with power steering will have REALLY light steering.
However there are sports cars that can do a pretty good job weighting the power steering and giving feedback.
Obviously its nothing compared to a hydraulic rack but it can be acceptable.
So you should try out a sports car with power steering.

power steering doesn't feel "responsive" though its like fake movement it moves more than it should for a tiny steering wheel movement it feels floaty and gross
>>
>>28609924
If it feels floaty, then that's manufacturer and model dependant. Floatiness implies dead space which some brands are more plagued with than others (looking at you Volvo)
>>
>>28609924
Are you sure the problem isn't drive by wire?
>>
>>28609924
What youre describing is the opposite of floaty. If you turn the wheel a small amount and the car doesnt respond, that is floaty.
That is what you want in an econobox, you dont want to keep adjusting the wheel because of every single road imperfection
>>
>>28609945
>you dont want to keep adjusting the wheel because of every single road imperfection
Yes I do
>>
>>28609934
Yeah >>28609917 and >>28609920 sound like they're talking about drive-by-wire (which technically is power steering) specifically.
For the uninformed there's no power steering, hydraulic racks, and drive-by-wire with the latter two both being power steering.
Drive by wire is horrific compared to hydraulic. As someone mentioned there's no road feel and you constantly have to correct retroactively to road imperfections just to keep going straight.

I've driven Peugeot 205s with and without PAS. Much prefer it with PAS.
>>
>>28609964
Oh no I was talking about electric power steering.
I thought OP was referring to electric power steering specifically.
But if he is referring to no hydraulic power steering either, I didn't realize. I thought miatas had hydraulic steering assist at the time.
> latter two both being power steering
Former* two

In terms of road feel hydraulic > electric >>> drive by wire.
>>
>>28609881
yeah
there should be a button to disable PS or at least decrease its power on every car
I often switch between no-PS and PS equipped shitboxes and every time I have to use the other one it feels like it doesn't want to hold direction and it takes me few km to adjust

89 mx-5 do have power steering it's just so light it doesn't matter. Mine didnt work and it was no problem. then my mech noticed it just had the wrong size belt on it and fixed it for free. Shit was far too light after so I took it off.
>>28609981
they do, OPs is just broken and he doesn't know.
>>
>>28609965
>Peugeot 205
Try driving a good car.
>>
>>28610009
>89 mx-5 do have power steering it's just so light it doesn't matter.
not all of them it was an option
>>
>>28609881
Modern cars have "sporty" quick-ratio steering that would otherwise be too heavy to DD without power steering. Heavier FF cars are the worst. Try dailying a 7th gen Accord with PS deleted, you'll get huge shoulders in a month tops. Its got short steering that's heavy even with PS.
>>
>>28609920
>Obviously its nothing compared to a hydraulic rack
hi, I think I must be retarded, I didn't know there was a difference between power steering and hydraulic steering. Doesn't power steering use hydraulic power to do what it does? What's the difference here?
>>
>>28610398
nta but yeah power steering uses pistons with fluid unless theres a newer type im not aware of
>>
>>28610402
okay, maybe the other guy is retarded then
>>
>>28610402
>power steering uses pistons with fluid unless theres a newer type im not aware of
electric power steering has existed for a long time now. it's not all hydraulic anymore
>>
>>28609899
my baseline is a 90s camry with a hydraulic steering rack
2018 camry: power steering actually felt ok. still needed a mild amount of effort but not overly assisted
2007 corolla: wow so that's what electric power steering feels like. very effortless, very unnatural. could barely feel resistance or the road in it.
1967 plymouth fury: jesus fucking christ, you couldn't feel where the wheels were pointing AT ALL, it was surreal. you're basically just only steering with your eyes because you have no idea if your wheels are turned at all or if there's just slop in the steering. the hydraulic assist was also very strong; you could literally turn the wheel while parked with just your pinky. not even the 07 corolla was like this. i know that one of the selling points of these old barges was effortless steering but still, i didn't like it at all.
>>
>>28610398
>power steering and hydraulic steering
Yeah hydraulic steering is powered steering, but there is also electric power steering, which is basically all modern cars. This is not to be confused with drive by wire.
>>
>his wheels aren't so sticky that turning at a standstill takes effort even with power steering
Poorfag or non-enthusiast, pick one
