I wanna go standalone this winter.
megasquirt vs beermoney vs MS3 vs fishdog
What is the difference between them? no meme answers please
I have a BP4W in an NA6 chassis. I want to remove the CAS, and switch to a hall effect crank sensor. I am also considering coil on plugs. I will be keeping it NA, currently have a square top mani.
Can I do that with plugin play ECUs like MS3?
What else do I need besides a new TPS? What kind of intake will I need to switch to? How long should it be?

I went with BMM for my NB so I have a slight bit of experience there. Their quick start guide has info on what all extra NA6 needs, and yes it supports COP. When I was shopping for my ECU I was told in no uncertain terms to avoid Megasquirt/MS3 as they cost so much more for very outdated hardware.
https://www.beermoneymotorsports.com/pages/miata-quick-start-guide
>>
>>28615289
its literally a MS3PNP though, even the same options plug.
>>
>>28615403
No? It runs FOME open source software on a RusEFI Proteus board, just with the OEM Miata ECU connectors attached. Megasquirts use their own proprietary boards and software. Just because they're both plug and play with the same ECU and options plug connector block doesn't mean they're the same thing at all, I'm guessing the guy behind BMM simply found the same supplier for the ECU connector block as MS uses, which would have been cheaper than developing their own just to be different.
>>
>>28615455
Your link literally asks for tunerstudio which MS also uses.
>>
>>28615475
A lot of ECUs use it nowadays, especially homebrews.

Me being a MS and Speeduino builder, can only tell you... The MS may not be perfect but especially with the MS3 and onwards, it's miles away from the Speedy and it's derivatives in terms of capacities and reliability.
>>
>>28615475
That's the tuning program, not the software in the ECU itself.
>>

sometimes I think about removing my passenger seat for the storage space and since nobody ever wants to ride in my miata anyway.
but I think more people would try to race me assuming it was for race track weight reduction purposes.
>>
>>28616185
I did for about 3 weeks while doing wiring, no one cares. Did enjoy the massive amount of space though, but you will be surprised how much sound the seat muffles by being present than absent.
>>
>>28616963
Nothing but a thin layer of firewall between the seat and the exhausts kek. I was a bit shocked by that when I was replacing the rear O2 sensor. Cut a hole in one specific part of the carpet and hello exhaust.
>>
I am going to finally plug in my MS3PNP this weekend and see if I can flash to a new firmware. I still don't know shit about tuning

Welp boys, it's possible over for the year.
Went for a drive, heard a weird noise, went to investigate, bad rear wheel bearing. I can see a light wobble of the wheel. Waiting on a tow truck.
I used the BroFab kit for the rear, I don't know what failed yet. Maybe the axle nut came loose.
Hopefully it's just the wheel bearing, should be an easy fix.
>>
>>28617863
Never mind. It was just a loose lug nut. Thankfully the extended studs did their job.
I run aluminum lugs that ask for 70lb. I retightened them all to 80.

I feel dumb. But hey.
>>
Currently shitting
Very soon I will jack it up, take all the underbody panels off, take out outside to finish cooling, use a salt rinse car soap, blast the fuck out of the under carriage and then leave it to dry overnight.
And tomorrow she gets the full cosmoline treatment after she's good and dry
>>
>>28617956
Why Cosmo? Why not body cavity wax?
>>
Literally handfuls of soggy leaves out of these two holes, on both sides. Had to fish then out with chopsticks, my hands through the hole the designers kindly put in the wheel well, and pressure wash like mad
>>28617997
I really like cosmo for the exterior surfaces, it holds up incredibly well. You can see a bit of it in this pic, down in the wheel well from when I did a coating of it 4.5 years ago. Daily driven in the rust belt year round.
I'm going to hit every crevice of frame with the Eastwood internal frame coat pro, then every exterior surface with a touch up of Cosmo, I could probably add some cavity wax on top of the IFC for good measure. Maybe I'll do that, any product suggestions?
>>
>>28617917
I have a set of anodized black lugs I was going to use, when I put the very first one on, the anodized wore off on the corners and it looked like shit. Literally only used one and I have 15 brand spanking new ones just sitting in a box. Waste of money for me. Glad they work for you.
>>
Car is clean and mostly dry. Been in the garage with heaters running all night. When it warms up a bit more I'll put it in the driveway to finish drying in the sun
So game plan for today..
Prioritizing the internal frame coating in the frame rails, rockers and quarters, because I'm not sure what kind of state they're in and I want to neutralize anything that's already in there. If I have extra it's going in the subframes
Cosmo on all of the exterior surfaces, let it tack up for a few hours and do a second coat of cosmo

I also ordered 6 cans of surface shield and a 3m fogging wand to go through and hit every cavity again later this week. Probably good to have something that doesn't dry, and has good creep to get into every crevice. And I won't have to obsessively clean to apply surface shield like the cosmoline requires, so no big deal if it gets a little bit more dirty in the rails from dding

Make sure you post pics, I am interested in the progress

so what is the consensus? I have no experience tuning shit.
A local shop said they will tune for $1500
On the Miata forums some guy offered remote/online tuning for $800
I do have an old laptop if that matters.
I want to get a basic tune and limp the car over to the shop. I have no idea how a remote tune even works.
Thanks
>>
>>28618951
Absolutely pumped these holes fill of it, got all the way up behind the arch. Put it on heavy for best chance of sleeping into cracks. Also took the door sill trim out and shot it into the 4 holes on each rocker. Taped 3 up, spray one, move a piece of tape to the one I just sprayed etc. keep it from blowing out at me.
Little beer break then I'm going under the car and hitting rails. Ended up using about 1 can per rocker and quarter. Probably overkill
>>
>>
Job done. Awkward hitting the wheel well with cosmoline, got some real bad runs but it'll dry eventually. Still some internal frame coating dripping out of the rockers. Wiping it periodically as it dries. I'll poke the holes out if they need it when it's dried tomorrow

There's no way that's a real thing, who would even make something like that? Aluminum is basically cheese, you can make it work for some things, but a nut is not one of them; it's just going to creep loose.

Got my megasquirt updated to 1.6.1, now just gotta make a new intake and ditch that MAF and then figure out how the fuck to tune it.
>>
>>28603945 replying to this.

I played with the alternator belt, it didnt make a difference.
my belts make a horrible squeaking only when starting on cold, it goes away after like 4 seconds and doesn't ever come back. the krikit gauge is $30 on amazon, it used to be $11. im not paying that tariff price.
new water pump, new alternator, new ps, ac compressor works.
as i mentioned earlier, the 1.8 alt mount bracket that i upgraded is very flimsy. maybe something isnt aligned? but then it would be making the noise the entire time.
everything else seems to be good, when i had the belts off every pump and pulley spun fine.

i'll have to dig in deeper and remove the intake and pull the belts and look things over again.
what could this be?

24 hrs since I finished the internal frame coat, still dripping out of one rocker drain hole. I know I definitely got full coverage ha. Been playing the poke all the drain holes with a zip tie every few hours game. I drew on the rocker seam with a sharpie so I know exactly where the drains are and can make quick work of it. Also it dropped out of the rockers in places where there aren't even drain holes so there were definitely spots water could get into that weren't intended. Unless I missed something there are 5 true drain holes on each rocker. In front of and behind each jack point and one in the middle

What mpgs are you all getting in your Miata?
I got an NA8, and I'm topping out at 21mpg.
Now I go into 5th gear as much as I use reverse, and I drive quite spiritually. It also smells rich
>>
>>28621107
32-34ish average in my ND
Low as 24 when I'm agro
>>
I have a confession to make, I bought a miata so I could pretend to drive an old british roadster around. The flared arches on the ND really make me think there's round headlights at the front. But now that I'm comfortable with it, I feel like it's not doing it for me anymore. How terrible of an idea would it be to sell my safe, comfortable, powerful little go-kart for a 50 year old scrap heap with a hamster wheel for an engine?

I think when I looked into this last time you couldn't even get insurance for such a thing outside of hagerty that lets you drive it once a month when the stars align, jupiter is at it's highest point in the sky and the sun casts it's shadow between noon and 3 o clock.
>>
>>28621107
29mpg in my 2002. I tried to get 30 and can but that's without giving it really any gas for the entire tank. That's with 93e0 though, I get around 25 on regular 93.

All my drain holes pass the zip tie test, and it's finally stopped smelling like a Chinese factory with all the fumes the IFC put off while curing. Surface shield coming in a few days and I'll hit the rest of the chassis with that. Lord willing my Miata survives 1000 winters

AC update
so basically my car isnt affected by the tsb for the hi pipe: https://www.miata.net/garage/tsb/MC-10188019-0001.pdf but the most up to date pipe is still the culprit, it cracked on me.
the tsb states:
>This is caused by a crack in the cooler pipe (HI) A (1) due to engine vibration
dealer quoted 900 for a replace and recharge.
i can get the pipe and o-ring for 107 but if engine vibration is the cause, and i already had the thickest pipe which and it cracked, it will happen again.
seems like the best option is to upgrade the engine mounts.
fab9 sells https://fab9tuning.com/performance-engine-mounts-nd-16-mx-5/
getting the pipe, o-ring, mounts, and doing the work myself will still be cheaper than the dealer job and theoretically prevent engine vibration from cracking the pipe in the future. the tradeoff with all upgrade engine mounts is more felt vibration, but i dont want to have the pipe crack again in 5 years.
I havent seen much on the forum about more recent cars cracking lines, i wonder if they just baby their cars
>>
Well after a nice drive last night, I think I will go full NA build and not turbo. Something about winding through the rev range in the mountains I like more than what a turbo would make me hear. Also, I don't think I would have as much fun with a turbo since it will be much faster and I can't enjoy the speed gaining as much. Sounds weird but it's kinda like riding a 1000rr superbike but preferring to ride a 450 instead.

Has anyone cleaned the wiper stalk contacts on a NB? I was thinking of buying a new stalk unit off eBay and cleaning it to swap into my car, but it turns out that the wiper stalk is part of the entire assembly that also includes the turn signals. Currently I don't have variable wipers and now the low wiper setting will stop exactly where I pull the stalk back up, even in the middle of the windshield. Sucks having to time the wipers because of a little morning dew.

Picture obviously related.

Would I be fucking myself in terms of scca autocross class if I got a mazdaspeed miata? Finally planning to buy a weekend car this spring now that I have a garage, and was thinking mazdaspeed miata, 2zz mr2, or maybe s2k if I can find a decent one for the price. But a bit worried if I buy a speed miata it'll end up super uncompetitive for its class if I ever want to autocross.

No but have fun shifting the 6 speed or banging the limiter more often than you like. The 5 speed is barely adequate for autox unless it is a tighter course. You could put in 3.63s and have a very slightly longer 5 speed with OD though.

Hey anon, I don't want you to take this the wrong way, but you seem a little lost in the weeds. What are you hoping to accomplish by going standalone?
Mega squirt is a tried and true path. I don't know much about the other two options, but you should check with local Miata groups on the various Miata specific forums or FB groups in your area. They'll be able to point you to a good tuner that will specialize in one or more of the standalone ECUs.
You can also find base tunes online that will get you limping along with little to no tuning.

>>
>>28627221

>>
>>28627219
Oil drains a bit slower (garage beer time) and there's going to be a tiny bit more oil left in in the pan after draining than if you just used a bolt because it's like if you had a bolt drilled through in the center so you have that small bit of added height to reach the drain. I don't think that's an issue because whatever little bit is left is getting diluted by the new oil and any crap gets picked up in the filter. Car calls for 4.5qts with filter, I was just shy of the max dipstick after about 4.3 so it's not much.

The main risk if it would be the lowest part of your oil pan (the drain sticks straight down instead of out the side etc) and you don't have a tray that covers it like on the nd, could risk breaking your pan if you hit something

i just stick a 5gal bucket under the car and let it drain into that, but if you have to put them back in jugs for disposal you can hook a tube up, drain straight into the bottle, cut the stream when it's full, cap it off and move to the next bottle. There's no mess. Also if you were to do an oil analysis, same idea. You can get a mid drain sample without getting oil all over the place
>>

>>
>>28628489
i also don't believe him, because oil naturally darkens from oxidation, even if the car isn't run.
>>
>>28628491
ND also has """internal EGR""" cam phasing that means at cruising load the combustion chambers are 10-20% exhaust gases for emissions and fuel efficiency, which would make it darker faster. But again that's stuff that's suspended in oil and not caked on the internals. Dark oil doesn't mean bad oil. Are you getting commission on that? Why is it twice as much as the FM one??
>>
>>28629582
I wish, I just bought it because I needed one fast and it had free overnight shipping. It's CNC machined in the USA by a small company and the FM one appears to be any other off the shelf made in China one. It also already has the hole for a safety wire, which is nice. Overkill 9000, sure, but I'm not exactly crying over an extra $12 to get something well made from somewhere more local.
>>
Bros, I want a Miata and I could afford one but I live in rural Ontario and it feels retarded to buy one here with our winters. The low ground clearance is one thing, but the soft top in the snow? I think I would need a winter beater and I don't really have money and space to maintain two cars.
>>
>>28629600
Don't wipe off the snow and pretend it's a hard top. Good insulator too.

I'm in the market for a sports car now that I sold my Gr86 and am in a good spot for a weekend two seater that I don't mind wrenching on.

So found out what it is. Seal around the oilpan decided to suddenly go and chuck all of the engine juice on the road. I was able to locate a big oily streak on the road where it happened in the daylight. No idea why that happened, but the previous owner used that liquid seal crap to put it on, figuring that must have failed.

No sparklies in the oil though nor any signs of serious damage with the pan off, so a mile or so of abuse didn't kill it. Got a new seal set coming in the mail.

personally i'm going for an 09-15 NC PRHT. forged internals and lower compression means it can handle boost i you want to go that route in the future. still get the hard top convertible but when it's down you still get the true convertible experience. more room in the cabin doesn't hurt and it still has a double din head unit so you can drop in something aftermarket to keep it up to date. the 16-23 ND head unit is a piece of shit and can't really be replaced. i also like that the NC isn't spying on you and potentially selling your driving information to insurance companies.
>>
>>28630870
brah, your shit is fucked
I highly recommend you send out whatever oil you have left with a detailed description of what happened to https://www.blackstone-labs.com/
they will tell you if there are any metals in the oil.
before that, I wouldnt waste any money on the engine.

I had an oil plug come loose while I was going 50, saw the low engine oil warning come on, i immediately killed the engine, and coasted over. Thankfully there was a Vatozone within walking distance, I picked up the cheapest oil they had, and a new drain plug. I babied the car home, and did a proper oil change the next day. I sent that oil out for analysis. Week later I got results back, no metal contamination. I did the right thing by immediately turning off the engine.
you drove home for a mile with no oil pressure.

I second the Blackstone test, I just want to know how much you fucked it. Rod bearings absolutely fucked (you heard knocking so they are already deformed), piston rings probably fucked, crank journals probably fucked, cylinder walls maybe fucked.

Replaced the master and slave cylinders today, as well as replaced the odd clutch line mess with a HEL braided line that goes straight from the master to the slave. Got to admit, not best part impressed with the braided line. The quality of the part is fine, but to me it seems as thought the line is backwards, and it seems a few inches too long, causing it to rub up against the other pipes nearby. It has to go this direction ass it has a plastic nut that the factory spring clips locate, but I feel as though the kinked hard line should be on the slave side, not the master. Very odd. Partly wishing I just left the factory lines in place.

Get a guardian design steering wheel and the verus throttle peddle spacer at least
>>
>>28639130
these are things i didn't know i wanted
i might get the throttle pedal spacer but that steering wheel is a bit expensive at the moment
>>
>>28639252
The pedal spacer is absolutely worth it, improves the toe heeling so much. It's exactly where I wish it was from factory. It's a pretty affordable mod so swing it if you can.
The guardian design is pretty pricey, I think mine ran me about 1000. I got the corsa 330 drift (no thumb bumps, just a smooth circular wheel) with perforated leather at 3 and 9, and a noon marker. It's a massive difference in driving experience though desu. I found the OEM wheel to be too thin, large, and awkward.. Very out of place compared to the tight notchy shifter. I optioned the extra thick option from GD but they contacted me recommended I get their standard size which is still considerably thicker than factory and it was the correct move. Also getting to retain the airbag and factory controls is huge, I cant understand how people drive cars with no airbag or hans and helmet on the street

what do the blue and red lights indicate?
>>
>>28642203
if you have a decent afr table, run autotune, and then smooth out the 3d ve plot manually then youve literally done exactly what a tuner is going to do lol
the biggest benefit a tuner is going to give you is setting up all of the annoyances like closed loop idle so that it catches itself properly and when you are going from slipping the clutch to idle that it doesnt want to stall out, and setting up accel enrichment, ego control, start up settings, all stuff that you can figure out without causing any harm to your engine as you drive the car. there is absolutely no reason at all to pay someone to tune your street car
>>
>>28642571

Thanks. If you can get your hands on a pushrod V8 car, I'd 100% recommend it. The MG is barely faster than my Miata, but just the sound alone makes it worthwhile.

>some guy near me has a C5 Corvette

The blue light is your high beam indicator, and the red light is your electrical charge indicator.

I'm unhappy with the off the shelf gauge mounting solutions for the ND, and the lack of a true oil temp sensor so I bought an extra a pillar trim panel off eBay. Going to modify it to have 3 gauge pods with some cutting and short strand fiberglass body filler, make a gel coat fiberglass mold, and vacuum bag some carbon fiber.
Starting with an oil temp sensor to figure out the coding (My wife is programming a teensy 4.0 board and doing the actual gauge assembly for me. She might try messing around with esp32-s3 too. Idk shit about electronics, I just like wrenching and bodywork).
The current plan is to tap into the obd2 12v and ground via a splitter, have small box containing the dev board under the dash somewhere, and then run the cords for the displays (1.8" circular TFTs) to a pillar meaning the depth of the gauges could be kept quite small. The a pillars are obstructive enough as is so keeping pcbs out of the display housing seems ideal. Planning to add oil pressure and transmission oil temp after the first sensor is working correctly. I also want a physical brightness dial linked to all 3.
Probably going to take a few months of weekend tinkering. I also can't do too much on the a pillar until we design and 3d print the display housings and I figure out how to best incorporate them. The tweeter is also in a prime gauge location so that might need to be moved higher up on the pilar or deleted
>>
>sit in traffic
>temp gauge moves from middle to 3/4

Well speed bleeders made it a million times easier. The rear valves are taller than the front, and are a different part size. Front passenger started to round off, so I put some penetrating oil on for a bit, then tapped it with a hammer and drowned it some more. Used a 6 point ratchet and it came off. The drivers rear I decided to double check and promptly snapped off the valve with a few threads above the caliper. Vice grips couldn't grip them. Went to Lowe's and got some bolt extractors, but lucky me the valves are BRASS and it just drilled them. Ended up getting a new caliper and putting that on.

What a day.

Damn rough stuff anon but good job getting it done. Put a lil dab of anti seize on the bleeders next time. Those rotors are looking a lil rough too
>>
>>28645040
Yeah the rotors are about 15 years old, they held up good. Powerslots, I recommend them but I don't think they make them anymore? I used hawk hp+ pads last time and they are much harder than the OEM pads, chewed the rotors quite a bit. Plus the new job has some construction and I'm sure the gravel bits are getting caught up.

Thanks dude, hope your Miata is doing well.

I think people were already anticipating more power in a miata when the ND2 was being released. also, the ND2 has been around for >5 years and has had power options up to forced induction for almost as long. basically, there already exists a bunch of secondhand ND2s ready to be modified in such a manner. no necessity to be the mother of invention anymore. it is unfortunate because the ND3 otherwise is the best of the bunch, if it had more power it would be the perfect goddamn car

I drove an NC for the first time. Ive had a total of four 1.6 and 1.8 NAs.
The NC is still such a nice platform. It's tall and about as body roll-y as an NA stock, but the throttle response, pedal position, shifter, steering, and predictable suspension are still so good, incomparable with a normal commuter car. The torque curve is linear and predictable. The weight isnt bad and I'm sure a little extra power and lower suspension can make up for it. Still lighter than alternative cars of the era.
The only negatives were the sun visors suck and the soft top can't easily be closed while sitting in the car.
The hate the NC gets is fake news. I would totally buy one just to avoid dealing with as many old car problems on an NA.
Now I need to find an ND to drive. I wonder what will be the low point of depreciation, I'd guess they wont get as cheap as NCs.
Sorry for the blog. Carry on Miata trannies.

Can't you already find nd2s for under 20k? Nd1s probably even cheaper, but who wants that shit

I do like the NCs but there is a lot of ford in them so I tend to stay away
