Group B was fucking insane, possibly even borderline criminal. Holy shit.

honestly I don't get why people that go to rally events insist on getting in the way.
>>
>>28614144
they dont any more because people got killed doing it
>>
>RS3, and thus the 5 cylinder, dead in 2027
there's a C4 S4 near me on marketplace...

i witness one of these events in the 80s
>>
>>28614147
why the fuck did they even do it to begin with? was it some psychotic train dodge fantasy?
>>
>>28614143
FPBP
>>
>>28614167
it's because in person, rally events are really, really fucking boring, so people stood in the way so they could see further down the road in hopes of seeing more than .3 seconds of action.
>>
>>28614134
Slow and overrated.
>>
>>28614167
they just really wanted to be as close to the cool shit as possible, so kinda yeah
rally racing is one of the only major competitive events where there is basically no distance between spectator and the competition
>>
>>28614176
In 2011, the Reno Air Races were just like that too.
>>
>>28614167
also because in the 80s no one had cell phones and the tracks were miles and miles long so thousands of people gathered in specific spots, making viewing impossible unless you were right up in the road
>>
>>28614236
>in the 80s no one had cell phones
smart phones
(rich) people in the 80s did have cell phones
>>
>>28614236
>>28614239
Doubt it matters when there's no reception anyway.
>>
>>28614134
Meh it was a meme. You still see the same shit today at the Baja. Dumb Mexicans laying in the middle of the road and crowding the sides like that as 7000lb trucks fly over whoops at 120+mph.

>>28614184
Based boomer pilot chad taking out cripples. Yooouuuu don't need to worry about reusing non-reusable fasteners lol.

yup and now wrc is boring as fuck

I always wondered how much people get beaten with the gravel kicked up by the cars.
That has to have hospitalized somebody

The old brick phones were huge because they had to use a long distance antenna, as well as a large battery to support it.
You probably got better reception than a smartphone would

Yeah. Rally is kind of gay.

I only wish it was half as interesting as the Dakar rally.

Thirdies ruined Group B.

Why do Americans obsess with removing the driving out of all motorsports? They're just going in a straight line.
>>
>>28614744
>Why does a 1000km rally on Mexico across the desert have a straight section
>Fucking Americans
European moment lmao.

>>28614679
Dakar hasn't been good since it left Africa desu. I'll admit the South American route was badass but it wasn't dakar. The Saudi route through literally nothing the entire course with no variation? It fucking sucks.

*camera phones, asshole
the point is viewing was limited, you couldn't pull out a phone and watch the whole race from a drone's perspective. you either shoved your way to the road and saw 5 seconds of action or you didn't see shit at all
>>
>>28614760
>European moment lmao.
No, I'm familiar with the Baja and other trophy truck shit. There's simply very little actual driving involved, that's a fact. Rallying is about the art of driving perfected, whereas the American "equivalent" tries to remove that factor as much as possible, as with most American motorsports. American car culture is about being seen in a particular vehicle, while European car culture is about using said vehicle. It's a fundamental difference.

What about finding a good elevated spot and optionally bringing a binoculars? I remember watching special stages in Europe like that, I think I had like a kilometer of the track in my field of view.
>>
>>28615079
>a good elevated spot and optionally bringing a binoculars
I wasn't there so I can't speak from experience, but from the races I've watch the largest crowds tend to block elevated viewing, or the crowds are gathered in places where there arent hills nearby by

It happened in the mountains so I was like dozens of meters elevated.
Nevertheless, if the orgs had wanted for the events to be viewable directly they would have erected the seating/stands for the public while routing more of the track around these stands.
>>
>>28615070
>American car culture is about being seen in a particular vehicle
Only true statement youve made.
>>
>>28615113
How would you even go about erecting stands for a 7 mile long track? I suppose they could have picked the best spots along the way and built bleachers, sold those seats at a premium and made extra bank
>>
>>28615169
They choose what roads to use for the special stage, they even choose start and finish (could be right next to each other if they want to) so if there exists a vantage point and say 2 of those 7 km are somewhat viewable from it, it's a good place for the stands. Won't work for all biomes though, forest covers stuff pretty well, for example.
