I put this PCV in after the old one died.

Probably going to just plug this, run two lines from the balance tubes on either valve cover to a catch can, then plum in a PCV from the catch can to the intake.

Oh, and change the oil. Wanted to try out that valvoline restore and protect shit oil that's been shilled hard all over the internet, but they don't sell the 10w40 here...

blow through it. if it doesnt hold the pressure its bad. or the opposite pull through it and if it doesnt flow then its stuck and bad. most of the time its just a plastic piston that slides back and forth in the hole by air pressure.
>>
>>28620458
I went from losing maybe a half cup of oil per month to it pissing about 2 liters out in two weeks, with it leaking from basically every low tension sealing surface ( cam sensor, oil switch, seepage through the cork oil pan gasket, and even the PCV bung itself).

Tried to move air through it, couldn't. Put some ATF in it and tried to manually open it with a screw driver and ended up breaking it, before the pintle moved. The spring inside had rusted and jammed up the works.

I do not like the placement of the PCV valve anyway, it sets on a nearly non-baffled location, and when on boost I'm sure its pulling quite a bit of oil through it. Hence the plan to bung that up, and run lines from the balance pipe on each valve cover back to a catch can, then place the PCV on the line between the can outlet and the intake.

are torque wrenches just a meme? Is there really such a thing as "over torqued"?
Am I going to get killed by big-tool for saying this?
>>
>>28622348
The bolt size dictates its clamping pressure. Too much torque down weakens the metal. Not enough and the bolt can vibrate loose. Gudentyte on everything but internal engine bolts is fine.
>>
I need to flush out my brake fluid. I want to delete the clutch delay valve at the same time since that also requires bleeding the system. The only way to access it is to remove the abs module/ pump. Do I really need line wrenches to undo the lines? Its in good shape with zero rust on the nuts.
>>
>>28622348
Chink torque wrench is like $30, a decent electronic adapter is $50, both will do good enough.

look into metrinch wrench/socket sets, they fit both metric and imperial fasteners, but the great thing is the force applied goes to the flats of bolt heads rather than the corners so you won't have anywhere near the chance of rounding shit off. they're also great for already rounded bolts.
they do have a bit of slop due to the design though which can throw some people off. get them when they go on sale.

i put swaybar bushings on my shit yesterday and then slightly overtightened the end-links today.
it does seem to respond better to steering now but I think the next step is either replacing my 42 year old steering rack or replacing the mount bushings with solid bushings, the new ones I put in it when i did the front-end a year ago have all splintered and look fucked, I think it was exposure to oil that killed them, don't know.
probably gunna stick a prybar on it and see if the rack does infact move.
>>
>>28624639
Engine degreaser if it's available, just follow the directions. You can probably use a good dish detergent if you have nothing better. A pressure washer can help blast away really build up crud, but you have to be careful not to hose the air intake or any electrical connectors.

posted a few weeks ago about my dads 1959 ford i been working, figured i would do an update if anyone remembers.

i've replaced over the last month or so:
fuel pump
fuel filter
carburetor (and fittings to make it work)
distributor cap and rotor
spark plugs
spark plug wires

additionally done:
tuned the carburetor (vacuum advance threw me off)
greased the wheel bearings
throttle rod clip needs modified to work with new linkage, zip tie and sleeve to keep it from coming off.

it was a complete crash course for me but the car is running quite good now, it had a slight hiccup going up hills occasionally and i figured it was a lean condition and adjusted the screws to give it a bit more fuel, luckily unlike the old carb i have access to a vacuum port this time so i was able to use a vacuum gauge to help tune it.

took a picture of the engine bay after i finished up today.

I usually use wix filter catalogue to find the biggest filter that will fit, or if I'm in a rush and I know the thread size I'll get the most similar motorcraft filter at walmart. They're decent filters and haven't changed in forever. Using a parts store for interchange is asking for problems

still, for £35. And really you don't need a lot of torque from a ratchet, you're not using it to tighten/break nuts.

Not him but in really tight places it's usually a hassle to position the ratchet. I'd happily take another minute of repetitive hand motions over removing-swapping-hand guiding (or worse) the socket again.
If it's not so tight you usually can get away with a normal (handgun-like) electric driver so you don't really need the one looking like a ratchet.
>>
>>28628912
the ratchet will fit where the gun wont. Neither are needed for the guy in his driveway unless he also values his time and has the extra cash for nice tools. Nothing wrong with doing it by hand at all.
>>
>>28629009
I got this (but putting "Parkside" and "nice tools" in one sentence is a bit of a stretch).
My point is if you're limited to a ratchet it's pretty tight already, so getting one (thin) ratchet out and trying to fit another (really thick right below the head) in the tight space and over the bolt's head you can't even clearly see might be more cumbersome than just keeping ratcheting by hand for a minute or so.

On the other hand it looks like some Parkside tools are a bargain, and the ratchet seems to be one of them (does pretty well compared to Bosch and Milwaukee according to youtube). They lack some protections though, and their battery system is a bit sketchy: from the same youtube videos it appears they finally added cell balancing not too long ago and only to some batteries sold separately.

Wiggled my crank shaft sensor and my engine stopped running like shit

Now I'm wondering if It's just a crap connection or the sensor is cracked. I wont be able to test my theory until maybe monday at the earliest.

Anyway, if it's cracked what's the best way to extract a broken crank sensor from a 4.6L Modular V8? I would be doing this outside because I am poor.

Car is a crown victoria so there is plenty of room in front of the engine with the cooling fan removed. but god I hope this doesn't turn into me pulling off the timing chain cover. (I do not have the money to humor doing a timing chain if it's needed)

For a street car tube and fin is better. Bar and plate once heat soaked takes way longer to cool down and weighs alot more as you found out.

i changed my oil in my rav4 for the first time today. it took literally all day. I know how to change oil but only cars i ever owned had oil filters access from the top.

couldn't find oil filter because i didn't realize it was hidden in a metal housing which needs specialized tool. find the tool at walmart for way cheaper than online, buy it. go to use it.

the female end is made for 1/2" drive. every place you look suggests to get 3/8" drive socket set for small engine and car work, 1/4" for inside the home for fixtures or whatever. 1/2 inch is usually for more industrial settings -oh well.

Discover this only after oil drained. wife is out, ask her to stop at advance to get an adapter plus extender. They give her the 3/8 F to 1/2M adapter but 3/8 extender, fucking idiots.

ended up getting it off with breaker bar but the housing socket is completely stuck on and i didn't have time to keep fucking around with it so i just left it on there

>look up tools
>look up proper consumables
>(optional) watch youtube for tips and hints

As easy as that.

>every place you look suggests to get 3/8" drive socket set for small engine and car work, 1/4" for inside the home for fixtures or whatever. 1/2 inch is usually for more industrial settings -oh well.
Idk what places are those but it depends mostly on the torque and dimensions as far as I understand (not a professional mechanic). 1/2" ratchet (or a breaker bar) can transmit more torque without breaking than 1/4", same for the power tools, but those are going to be larger (as in "harder to fit in tight places"). E.g. short 8 mm socket is going to be way too thick if made for 1/2" square. Ideally you are supposed to have sets of sockets for different square sizes, but you can get away with using 6.3 mm/1.4" screwdriver hex bits instead of 1/4" square for example. Or with 3/8" for almost everything with proper adapters to/from 1/4" and 1/2" for some odd tools and fancier ratcheting handles that can withstand the torque for tougher jobs. Or just go 1/4"+1/2". All those for cars only, by the way. You can find tiny fasteners even in the largest trucks and you can also find bolts requiring 200+ Nm (calling for 1/2" square) in small Euro shitboxes as well (usually around brakes/steering/suspension).
>>
>>28633281
yeah. if its that heavy its a bar and plate cooler. tube and fin weighs less, cools better over all but heat soaks faster also returns to ambient quicker is all im saying

>no tools listed
Must be non-OEM. Car manufacturers supply stealerships not only with cars but with car-specific tools, those cost a lot of money. The newer and more over-engineered the car is the more special tools it requires. It's retarded to not put them into the manual. To use these tools properly techs at the stealerships need training and manuals (because no one expects them to remember this stuff for long), so you should be looking for these learning and reference materials.

I only fixed my car smell stripping all the carpets from the car and seat covers from the foams and washing/dunking everything on laundry detergent. Sometimes deeply scrubbed by hand. Use gloves as soap can screw your hands up. Drying is easier than expected. Rinse very well the foams, then suck the water with a bunch of microfiber towels. Repeat until you cant anymore. Then dry it up with some quality paper towels. Cars really clean rn. I did not spare even the seatbelts. It smells nicely like clean clothes now.

many ft lb wrenches torque struggle to be accurate at the low end
i use an inch lb wrench for 15 lbs and under, just multiply the ft lb by 12

at the lower end, ie, below 10Nm, I just make it tight, then do 45 degrees. I'm not buying another torque wrench just for those.

Nope, easy to overtorque and damage some flimsy plastic or soft metal (especially if it's not the first time you're screwing fasteners in it and it's not going to be the last) or set a gasket unevenly.

That's the same filter the 350z uses. You can upgrade to the gtr oil filter for more capacity, part number 15208-9E01A.

What do you guys do with your used chemicals like degreaser? I've had to clean a lot of greasy parts lately and use a heavy-duty degreaser that apparently melts grass and bunnies or whatever with how potent it is.
I wash parts in a tray that captures the rinse-off but I feel bad about pouring it down the sink or onto the ground. my current strategy is to leave the tray out in the sun and let the liquids evaporate and then scrape the solids into the trash but it takes forever to evaporate and I can't wash anything once the tray is full.

>inb4 popular mechanics gravel hole or unfunny redditry about pouring it down a storm drain

I just dump it out into the grass.
>>
>>28637523
I did that once and it caused a dead patch in my grass for almost a year. I've contemplated tossing it onto the road and hoping most of it evaporates rather than runs off into the storm drain.

Well that's nice to know. I think Purolator also makes an extended filter that's a little longer. Vq30det uses a sandwich adaptor from the factory for the turbo feed, so if the filter is much longer you actually have a harder time getting the filter on and off / or can't use a cap wrench.

But yes it is.

It takes about 15 minutes total on my ca20e to check /set valve lash.

Just get a set of feeler gauges and go to town. I prefer to set the lash hot, after extended driving.

I'd assume the 22r is similar based on its simplicity, single cam rocker shaft set up.

Need to be careful with that, some engines need to be set cold and won't have hot clearance listed.

anyone have experience with GM D52 calipers? I've got the spring/retaining clip on the back of the inner pad on both calipers, but on one side, it seems like that clip keeps popping the pad out, while the other side seems to actually hold it in place up against the piston. would it result in excess wear from pressing up against the rotor constantly?
>>
>>28639962
A reminder some brake manufacturers like ATE forbid slide pin greasing.
>>
>>28639987
if they told you to run the car without oil once per year would you do that too?
>>
>>28640538
Once per year, not the entire year? I don't get what you are trying to imply.
These brakes are well-known and aren't exactly new, mine are 20 years old.
>>
Probably should clarify >>28639987:
some brake manufacturers make brakes that are supposed to work with no lube applied to pins (self-lubricating pair of pins and guides, pin coating or something like that). The pins in those are known to fail prematurely with grease applied.
One example is ATE and some of their models for passenger cars. Always check with OEM repair manual for your car or for your brake calipers. Now I said it, hope 28640538 is happy.

Those types have partially exposed pins that will pick up dirt easily when greased. When the caliper retracts all the dirt the pins pick up get shoved into the bushing potentially locking the caliper.
