why did it flop?

No V8, and most Lincoln buyers are old women who want SUVs. Also extremely similar to the V6 MKZ. Actually pretty nice cars with that aside, not too expensive anymore
>>
>>28622054
Lincoln is an old people brand and sedans were on their way out. Their only marketable products at the time were crossovers and SUVs.
When people buy luxury sedans, they expect RWD or prestige, things this did not have. Cadillac understood this.
>>
>>28622054
if you believe the rumors, Ford was supposed to turn the CD6 (explorer) platform into something much bigger than it became. this platform wouldve underpinned a 4 door RWD sedan, likely a Taurus/Continental, and a 2 door Mustang. But those plans never came to fruition and got cancelled due to covid/Jim hackett being a retard.

There are many eccentricities with the Continental which hint at this, like the S550 rear subframe being an almost bolt-on addition which makes RWD conversions somewhat straightforward.

But yeah as others have said too much product overlap in a shrinking market, a market that even Audi is abandoning with the A7, and Cadillac abandoned with the CT6. It was even more doomed when it didn’t go RWD. Why spend $80k on a bad form factor when you can get an upper trim Suburban for the same price?
>>
>>28622054
It didn't really "flop" it was a pretty good car and pretty well received except for the water pump thing. I test drove one once and they are very very nice for the price. Maybe the best value luxury sedan next to Genesis.
>>
>>28622054
>let's take the legendary luxury name plate and make it a taurus
Should have been V8 and RWD.
>>
>>28622054
Because nowadays the only people buying american high-end sedans are "enthusiasts" who want at least RWD and a V8 not a billion year old grandpas.
>>
It just kind of sucked for the price. Even in the world of used car reviews were hindsight is 2020. You can go look at reviewers Saying cars like the Jaguar XJL is an insane deal or how you get so much car for the price. Then they hop in a Lincoln Continental and say even for a used car value it’s disappointing.

They made a new continental?

Ford has garbage marketing/campaign for most of its vehicles. Unless it is a Mustang, F150, or Explorer you never see much direct marketing by Ford. Local dealer ads/marketing sure.

Ford wanted to get away from sedans and small cars. Unlike Asian or certain European brands, US car manufacturing is not supplemented by the government.
Make 30% profit on trucks and SUVs, or make 3% on sedans while trying to compete with a Lexus or Acura, forget it.

Available options, naming and website.
Ford vehicles could be optioned as a Sport or ST sub model. They didn't advertise nor could you readily find info on these models.
Ever heard of a Criwn Victoria Sport?
How about a Fusion Sport with 300HP twin turbo 2.7 V6?
How about that Lincoln Continental that had the same 300HP V6, but if you optioned the 3.0 V6 that net you 400HP.
No, but albeit you heard about the Hybrid versions. Or the $100K variant so you could have suicide doors. But did you ever see an ad promoting the 400HP Conti? Nope.

As for Lincoln and Mercury in the end, rather than using easy to remember names like Zephyr, Continental, or Aviator, they tried to follow Mercedes and Lexus into the three letter world with MXZ, MKS, and some other bullshit you never could remember that meant nothing to you.
Lets not mention the whole, unless you get the Platinum package, only half your taillights will work.

>>28622908
the continental was the equivalent of the lexus LS tho
>>
>>28623586
that's a lot of words to say that sedans simply don't sell well anymore, for any brand
>>

>Ford wanted to get away from sedans

Customers wanted to get away from em' too after the Fiesta and Focus never worked out their automatic transmission problems.

>why did it flop?

FWD. Didn't offer a V8. Modern Lincolns have gotten too complicated and difficult to service.

The styling was nice though. If it was RWD it could have been a nice alternative to Cadillac. A modern FWD luxury sedan doesn't really make sense though. If you're buying a sedan over a SUV or crossover in this day and age you probably want performance or handling so you want RWD. If you're getting a FWD sedan then you're probably going Japanese.

No.
There are still plenty of sedans being sold, Camry, Accord, Maxima, various Lexus and Infiniti sedans around here, more so than SUV and minivans.
But if you are a private company in the US and your competition is a government backed entity, kinda hard to compete on price when you don't have a country funding you.
>>
>>28623737
>Infiniti sedans
There are literally no infinity sedans left
> Camry, Accord
taking the sales of every other sedan in decline
> Maxima
decline, probably will be on the chopping block
> Lexus
LS being discontinued, IS/ES losing trims
