Why haven't you taken the 5W-25 pill? I've started mixing 5W-20 and 5W-30 for the best of both worlds. >Better high temperature protection than 5W-20>Better fuel economy than 5W-30It's a no brainer.
i only have one shitbox. i don't want to risk breaking something by mixing oil.
fuel econonomy isn't a big deal for my motorcycle
>>28623722It doesn't work like that, OP, because you can't even really buy 5W-20 these days because any synthetic is just going to be 0W-20, which is what you should be fucking using if you own a 20 weight oiled shitbox, also don't even fuck around with 30 weight because you'll never get your oil to extreme temps under normal driving, and if you are racing, 30 weight isn't gonna cut it either.0W-20 is king of daily driven oils, it just is what it is.
>>28623722that actually makes 10w-50
>>28623722>he hasn't taken the 0w5 pill yetWe have such sights to show you
>>28623749but my daily requires a 40 weight oil
>>28623784Well then use that, but I see way too many guys with slow ass economy engines running heavier 30 and 40 weight oils for no reason when the car was specced for 20 weight.
>>28623749>owner's manual, usa: 0w-20>owner's manual, everywhere else: whatever viscosity suits your expected temperature range
>>28623789USA is a big ass country Anon, some places it's sunny and beautiful, some places it's below zero and fucked up when you cold start it, that's why 0W-20 works, short of a track vehicle that you're gonna romp the shit out of, you're not gonna get it hot enough to hurt the engine.
>>28623797the point was that it was largely done in an effort to get the best mpgs to avoid as many epa tax penalties as possible
>>28623788isnt that some kinda boomer logic about old engines? something about heavier weight helping with leaks on an old bad gasket.
>>28623749
I took the eurospec VW 504/507 5w30 pill for my Japanese car because direct injection is shit
>>28623817It's baby booming, my engine is 20 years old and it's still running regular 0W-20, not even high mileage nonsense, if you're engine is leaking, the seals are old, you're not gonna pour some snake oil shit in there to swell the swells, you should be doing the correct thing and re-sealing whatever the fuck is leaking
>>28623722dummy
my car pisses oilwhy would I want it to leak harder?
>>28624145Just fix your shit ffs
>>28624151It's slow enough that it doesn't even hit the low line on the dipstick between oil changes, and I have other shit I need to fix before I decide to pull the motor apart.
>>28623797>some places it's sunny and beautiful, some places it's below zero and fucked up when you cold start itYeah, that's what makes the difference in recommendations ridiculous. >>28623804 got it right, manufacturers are pressed hard to meet fuel economy standards in the US. If they can specify an oil that'll keep the engine going past the warranty period, even if it's not ideal lubrication, they'll do it if it helps meet those standards.
>>28624164It is ideal lubrication though, 20 weight oil vehicles have been around since 2002, and then oil evolved and became 0W-20 and you can put hundreds of thousands of miles on them if you just take care of it, Those cocksuckers at GM with their shitty products are basically gaslighting us that their inherently bad engines aren't a problem, it's the 0W-20 oil, so they give you a 5W-30 bandaid, meanwhile the engine is eventually gonna fail because it's shit to begin with.
>>28623722My German TDI requires 5w-30 but use 5w-40 even tho it's a deleted diesel. Is this correct?
>>28624176I'm not talking about any particular manufacturer's engines. The problem is how the same engine can be mandated to use 0W-20 in the US but not elsewhere in the world. Do the engines intended for US markets somehow have different lubricity requirements than those sold in other countries? If not, why would the recommendation be different? If 0W-20 is the best for the engine, shouldn't it be recommended for use everywhere?
I live in texas. my car and wife's car are spec'd for 0w-20. Obviously, this oil was chosen because it would've been suitable in northern shitholes that get down below freezing and super cold conditions so the viscosity is still fine enough that it flows. That said, 5w-20 should be fine in my area since it doesn't get cold enough that the highest viscosity of the 5w-20 is heavier than a 0w-20 oil at ~0 or lower, right?>my mechanic doesn't keep 0w-20 at his shop for some reason>I also don't want to get fucked by warranty claim if I get unlucky and I do have an engine problem in the futuream I just being paranoid or should I stick to a place that will use the specified oil weight.
>>28624967Just use 0W-20 Anon, any synthetic 5W-20 you buy is gonna be 0W-20, I've even done blackstone labs 5W-20 synthetic and after 3000 miles of beating on it, the oil was still a perfect 0W-20
