imo the 3rd gen caprice is the 2nd most iconic police car behind the P71 CVPI but, it probably shares that position with the LTD crown vic and Dodge diplomat since they all looked the same. Picrel is topped with a Federal signal Aerodynic lightbar. It's defo my fav lightbar of the era - edges out the Twinsonic and jetsonic for me. The Twinsonic was alright but the speaker on the Twin sonic is like more of an acquired taste.

LAPD got the 4th gen caprice right too, with the aerodynic too. I think for me on the 4th gen Caprice it's

I spoke a little too soon about MX7000s on Caprices desu, They look pretty good and honestly I think they look cleaner than the Streekhawk, the Streekhawk looks a little too tall on the Caprice which looks pretty low and sleek. But, the Street hawk was a lot more popular since it was simpler to work on and a bit older so Departments were more likely to have in stock.

Caprice MX7000:

argue they were even more quintessential than the Twin sonic as the classic brick lightbar. in face whelen edges on Caprices look a bit funny.

you could probably split modern emergency lighting into 3 eras.

The single beacon, a lot of people called them the gumball dispenser because they looked kind of like one.

You could probably split emergency lighting into 3 different era.

The early single rotating beacon, a lot of people called them the Gumball distancer because they looked like them. I don't know too much about them but, I know federal signal made a lot of them back then.

The next era was the Rotating light bars from around the 70s to the 90s. It was started with the Federal signal Twinsonic. This is the proper classic brick lightbar you've probably seen in cartoons.

If you asked a kid to draw a police car, it would probably have either a Twinsonic or an MX7000 or some kind of mix of the two.

Anyway so the reason for the move to Full lightbars and away from the single beacon was cars were getting faster and needed more lights to get people's attention.
>>
>>28624464
For me it's the 4th gen Caprice with Vector/Vision

>argue they were even more quintessential than the Twin sonic as the classic brick lightbar. in face whelen edges on Caprices look a bit funny.
I fucked that line up kek, I meant Arguably MX7000s are more iconic than Twinsonics. Anyway Whelen Edges on Caprices look kinda weird.

Anyway continuing what I was saying before, The Twinsonic was fairly popular but a drawback with it was when you drove fast it produced a lot of drag and apparently the difference was pretty significant in comparison to a car without a lightbar.

To combat this Federal signal put out the Aerosonic and Aerodynic (The Aerosonic had the Twinsonic internals in the same shell the Aerodynic would later use). The Aerodynic was really popular in its time (late 70s early 80s) and it was used by basically everyone

OP's Picrel is an Aerodynic and the 4th gen caprice earlier in the thread has it too.

It was also pretty iconic on the Blue NYPD cars from 70s to 90s. Their ones looked like Candy canes and I think their neat

The NYPD lightbars look different because NY Laws dictate that Emergency vehicles should have Red and white flashing lights. Most states require red and blue flashing lights, some of them are just blue flashers like Illinois. California has the most autistic law. It requires vehicles have a steady burn red light visible from the front with blue and yellow flashing lights visible from the back.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2w_nxRZlKjs

You can see the red light on the left in the video doesn't flash.
>>
>>28626637
Technically Cali cars only require the red steady burn with the blue and yellow flashers so. LAPD slick tops and unmarked crown vics go with the bare minimum.

That's a NYC thing and not NY period, right? Local municipalities seem to just run whatever and I know I've seen NY staties with red and blues on their Chargers, whatever lights they use are so pinprick-bright that from down the road, the red and blue blend and look like one purple light.

afaik, it's state law. Emergency vehicles were originally supposed to run Red and white lights but, nowadays they're allowed to run blue lights too provided they also have red and white lights. Apparently they usually run blue lights on the back. But, that's more de facto than de jure

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1iVVXSiSh0

here's a NY Sherriff responding on 9/11, They had a full red whelen edge at the time with white flashing Takedown lights:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xyFyeOaUH_0

These days they use Repainted NYPD cars though.

Albany PD and NY State police cars seem to follow this trend too but, their lightbars are fully red at the front

https://10-75.net/img17/D75_4043.jpg

https://www.publicservicevehicles.com/images/CmQQb9k0rS8oFfXrksaeWNGbNPMZRAycYPBFFdmO.jpeg

my guess is that the headlight flashers count as the White lights to comply with the law. They've got blue lights on the back.

Apparently just blue lights are reserved for Volounteer firefighters as a courtesy light

cops will often set up a checkpoint of sorts on a random road on any day of the week to test for drug and booze cruisers. Unsurprisingly this occurs more frequently on friday and saturday nights. The plan B is supposed to be an alternate method of getting home after a fun night out. basically,
>if you're drunk, don't drive, find another way to get home
>>
>>28629802
>The plan B is supposed to be an alternate method of getting home after a fun night out.
That's pretty far-fetched imo. Especially written somewhere only a person already driving (in traffic behind the cop) is normally able to read. Might give this person ideas like finding a way around the checkpoints instead of stopping and calling a cab. Which, by the way, no one does, so it's better to write
>if you're drunk, don't drive, find another way to get home
in a bar, on the door, from the inside. It's simple language with straightforward meaning, something a drunk could understand easier. But I'm not an Anglo, so who knows, their brains might be working differently.
>>
Are police cars a decent buy or not as a daily driver? I see so many actual p71s that are retired cop cars or taxis for sale for cheap. Are they good first car?
>>
>>28629849
Depends but, nowadays it skews towards know. There are 2 kinds of P71, the Patrol car and the detective car. Patrol cars are the most common and they've been absolutely ragged to hell. Ford says 1 hour of idling is roughly equivalent to 30 miles of driving. So, they're much more worn out than the mileage would initially imply. Detective cars are more sought after because they were mainly used to ferry Detectives to and from crime scenes so, they're generally less worn out and also in better condition since they don't generally do anything rough and tumble and the car hasn't been cut up to install the lighbar and cage. The catch is Ford stopped making the CVPI in 2011 and a lot of departments have already phased out their CVPI's, there's also a sort of "Crown vic tax" because back when Police agency's were offloading crown vics for pennies on the dollar, Youtubers and Social media fags couldn't stop spouting on about "muh cheap and reliable daily driver" which inflated the prices (even on ragged patrol cars) because people got the idea that Crown vics were desirable.

Anyway Detective cars are generally the most sought after, they're a lot rarer these days and most susceptible to mark-ups and people trying to pass of their Ex Unmarked traffic cars as detective cars (they're not the same) so, you should be careful about that.

If you can get a decent price on a Detective car in decent nick then you should go for it but, you should be aware that these cars are getting older and older and the mileage on them is only gonna go up.

Idk about Taxis desu. I'd think to stay away from them because they probably idle a lot like patrol cars and Since Taxi companies are businesses I think they only get rid of cars when they're on their last legs.

As a daily the P71 is alright, it rides well, the steering is good and most of them had air con especially if you live in a hot state. The fuel economy isn't spectacular though it's a 4.7L v8 and the intake manifolds crack
>>
>>28629834
it's just the usual public safety messages/propaganda like how you sometimes see those roadside signs saying "children about, slow down" or billboards here saying SPEEDING KILLS etc.
>>
>>28629834
>Might give this person ideas like finding a way around the checkpoints
oh and also you'd have to know via waze or other things like that where check points are set up, usually you can tell when someone has an "oh shit" moment and tries to turn around, that's when one of the cops at the checkpoint will chase them down. i've never tried myself but i figure if you just turned into a side street pretending you're a grandpa driver, or someone actually going to their house in that street, they probably couldn't care less.

> O-O
Are all USSR designed to look funny (like the Zambulance)?
>>
>>28629874
The stock radio and speakers are apparently pretty shit but, changing them out is a common mod.

There are a bunch of different options the Agency could have speced, Usually the front seats are cloth, it has this rough hard wearing rubber floor and easy wipe vinyl seats in the back. But, a lot of detective cars did spec carpets and cloth seats in the back. Some of them have front seats with a Stab proof steel plate in them. The fuel tank can also explode if the car receives a hard enough rear collision.

It used to be that people's assholes would pucker up when they see a crown vic. Because they'd think it was the police and they'd slow down and wouldn't cut you off and give you right of way etc. Idk about that now it depends on where you live - It's more of a knee jerk reaction though apparently - If you really wanna do that stuff you gotta look into Chargers or Interceptors but, it probably depends on your area

I always liked the cars from The Wire, most of the crown vics had a single dash light in then. It was a Code 3 deck blaster.

idk if the real Baltimore PD used them, there aren't any pics from the time. Probably not but, I'd be interested to see the details on why the prop department sourced them

The price issue might also be down to it being a 'luxury' car since it was marketed here as being a the luxury model of the Commodore. If someone in the US really wanted to, they could import some parts from a wreck and create a pretty classic luxury barge since our market still went for having pretty plush seats, as the Caprice really wasn't built for sport.

I've driven several.

>AWD Taurus is my favorite by far
>AWD Explorer is second just because it fits more shit, they do have an issue where exhaust gets pumped into the cabin. I called these the stinkymobiles and would try to drive the Tauruses instead.
>had minimal experience with the Caprice but it handled well
>Impala was ok but mostly a piece of shit, didn't handle as well as a car should, A/C had issues and would often break
>Crown Vic I'm sorry but they're the biggest pieces of shit where so much stuff breaks, completely destroy themselves by 100k miles, but you can feel the power of that engine
>Tahoes are downright dangerous for police duty, they're too big and heavy, you take a turn at speed and lose control. Very difficult to pursue suspects in and they get crashe often just because they don't fit on the road or in small places like a jail sally port. They get banged up often due to their sheer fatass size and it's seriously like trying to pursue a suspect in a Hellcat while you're driving a fucking schoolbus.

Haven't driven the Chargers or any Dodges but my next agency (if I get hired) I think has them. I pull private security for billionaires now so get to drive much cooler shit, sometimes armored.

I never realised why they made the Vision lightbar until recently. Since the lights are angled in a V shape, it makes more lights visible from the side than there would be in a straight light bar, it's actually genius
