I get that rwd vs fwd adds slightly more expense, but surely it doesn't make the car cost literally ten times as much.
Unfortunately, if you want a lightweight sports car with decent performance these days (that excludes the miata/86) then you have to bend over and get raped apparently.

Economy of scale or something like that

Didn't know about that second car until now, thanks.

The A110 is entirely aluminium construction. It's also a bespoke model, rather than being a variant of a mass-market car, namely the Civic, which reduced development costs.

The upshot of the miata is that the aftermarket is so huge, possibly even the hugest of any one car.
It'd be nice if mazda offered the same engine as the 250hp mazda3 turbo as an option stock, maybe even that 340hp v6 from the cx-70/90 turbo s if we are feeling spicy. And that would be killer as hell and a crying shame how noone does it (Mitsubishi could have single-handedly resurrected their reputation with a boosted 300+ hp Mirage; something that lightweight and aerodynamic is just BEGGING for it). Besides Alpine themselves with the A110 R, which has a little more power and a little less weight, and all the better for it.
But as it is there are tons of good and affordable turbocharging kits you can bolt on and make big power with. To say nothing of all the great sway bar, suspension, wheels, and other handling modifications available, too.

Looks like you have your solution OP

These are getting so fucking cheap, def one of the cooler and more unique cars in the price range
>>
>>28627358
Do you understand that as you make something light you make it far less rugged.

Now imagine designing, researched, and creating a light weight thing that doesn't ack-itself. That's where the money is, not some mythical lightweight jew
>>
Cool where can I buy a brand new crx for 5k?
>>
>>28627358
150 divided by 1676 is 0.086 hp/lb and not 0.89.

too bad the swift sport has been discontinued

low weight is one of the least cost efficient ways to improve car performance.
unless... you make the car smaller and weaker, with less hp. and worse Noise, Vibration, and Harshness,
making an already niche product less desirable, idk because its slow and cheap or what ever.
>RWD slightly more expense
mostly related to wheel base, I think a tubular backbone chassis is probably the most economical option,
also RWD really eats up cabin space, esp around the rear axle. transmission tunnel not so much since fwd cars tend to almost have those anyway.
>car cost literally ten times as much.
ages ago there was more sales volume + rival company's undercutting each other / selling loss leaders and halo cars.
that and RWD was the standard layout for many company's standard cars, much easier to convert for sporting purpose.

>>28627358
the average crx had way less than 100hp
also why the fuck are you comparing those cars as if they had anything in common

Nyet, miata is fine, leave alone.

In the U.S. the most powerful CRX was the 2nd gen Si which only made 108hp. The car in the OP makes 91hp. The 158hp B16 was never offered in the 1st gen. OP is just retarded.

This is 1500lbs and under $30k. Production cars are heavy and expensive because they have standards to meet. If you want cheap and light stop being a bitch and pick up a wrench.
