Hey g/o/ys. I have a 92 caprice wagon, came with a 305 (blown head gasket) and a 700R4 (slippy). I got a 370-400 hp cammed 350 sbc to drop into it. My plan was to have the 700R4 built up to handle 450 hp (for longevity’s sake) and then drop the motor in and call it done. Rear gears could just be done over winter (2.56 limited slip, what the fuck GM??) Anyhow it won’t be crazy expensive to build and beef up the transmission, but part of me wonders if it would be worth the effort of dropping an NV3500 5 speed in the wagon instead. I’ve never done a manual swap before and I’m not sure what’s involved in it aside from having to make a bracket for the clutch pedal assembly. Anybody here ever manual swap their rwd stuff? Any pointers? Should I just stick with a built auto for this for simplicity’s sake? Should I just throw a TH350 in and say goodbye to muh mileage? Thanks fellas.

>>28627611The nv3500 is 2" shorter than the 700r4 and not the bolt in swap everyone says it is, it's also weak compared to contemporary budget buys like the ar5 and has a huge 2-3 drop that sucks with anything but a stock motor. Get ready to spend the dough or build the automatic. T.- putting a nv3500 into a turd get now

>>28627611Whatever trans you use, installation should be a breeze, assuming it has a hydraulic throwout bearing. It's when you get into building custom mechanical linkages and figuring out the correct geometry, that it turns into a major PITA. BTW make SURE you have a swap-in driveshaft, or factor in a custom shaft at about $1500

>>28628083Honestly, that sounds pretty good. There are good sun gears, shafts and clutches that can turn a 700 from a weak bitch to a decent trans and you're not gonna be launching that boat off a starting line. Put a manual valve body in with a slightly looser converter and you're good to go.
