What's the mentality of people who buy brand new econoboxes? Are they retarded?
It literally makes no sense to drop $30k-$40k on a brand new camry/accord/sonata or whatever other gookbox when you can get them used 1-2 years old for half the price
>>
Non retards only buy new cars if its some sort of premium sports car that needs proven maintenance and can be optioned exactly with engine/performance package/trans/color/interior style/etc that the owner wants.

But spending that much on a fucking generic econobox is crazy to me, like there are billions of used camry's for sale and you have to get a brand new one?
>>
>>28633581
Because the fart limiter isnt blown out and it's easy to guarantee its not riced or abused if its new when u dont know shit about cars.
Certain cars like GTIs are immediately fucked and riced by the first owner within days of being sold new.
>>
>>28633581
No one buys them, they're all leases
>>
>>28633581
Sometimes you can get competitive lease deals on these types of cars that end up being cheaper than outright purchasing a used car. Also lots of people don't have the cash to pony up for 1-2 year old car, or even a 5+ year old cars so they need to go into debt slavery.
>>
>>28633581
Do you really think a "1-2 years old" used car is "half the price" of a new one? Does your country not have access to autotrader, or an equivalent place where you can look at prices of used cars?
>>
>>28633931
Commuter cars barely depreciate until 100k km here. Better off buying new for the most part, and doubly so with enthusiast vehicles.
>>
>>28633947
Same in America except 100k miles. I was looking at carmax earlier today and there were tons of shitboxes at $20k with 100k miles.

Post Covid you’re retarded if you buy a used econobox, aside from fb marketplace place beaters.
>>
>>28633581
they lease them for a year or two and that's how your 1-2 year old used cars are born.
>>
>>28633581
>get them used 1-2 years old for half the price

No, you might get like 2K under MSRP on an 2 year-old Cumry.
But new Cumrys are 3K+ under MSRP if you negosturbate a deal.
And they cum with better APR.
And better warranty coverage.
And avoid a bunch of bullshit risks like the previous owner crashed it and hid the damage, or had a sketchy repair you can't easily detect.

Personal example: recently sold a new car after 7 months 14K miles for the price I originally paid brand new. That car had issues too. Would never buy used. If you make decent money, it literally doesn't make sense. If you're rich, then it super duper doesn't make sense. If you're poor, you shouldn't be buying a car at all.
>>
>>28633581
>you can get them used 1-2 years old for half the price
From the normie POV, that'll instantly mean that your financing APR is going to go through the roof since you're now going '''used''', and factory warranties may or may not transfer over and already have been used.
A large reason norms will end up in some nu-econobox is since they'll take their old beater to a mechanic and essentially get scared off, since they'll get a quote for thousands of dollars to replace parts "because they're at replacement mileage" while charging for xx.x hours since "it's what the book says". Then, instead of spending $2700 to drive their 25 year old Accord for one more year, they'll choose to instead splurge on a new car to avoid that.
The fact that they'll pay way more in interest, insurance and whatnot is entirely negated because they'll be driving a "spaceship" with all the push to start/carplay/LED DRLs/backup cam/ambient lighting/drive modes/screens/apps that impress other vapid consumers.
>>28633886
The nicest GTIs I usually see around are bone stock and driven by old white dudes with gray hair. Those are the used ones you want.
>>
>>28633584
>>28633581
Well you can't get 1-2 year old econoboxes for half price, that's the part you made up. In reality the more reliable the car, and the cheaper its maintenance, the less value it loses over time.

A 2023 Civic Si costs roughly 26k-31.5k. A brand new 2026 Civic Si costs $32,190 MSRP. They're basically the exact same price.
>>
>>28633581
but how can you buy used if nobody buys new?
>>
>>28635523
we don't need to think about hypotheticals where no one buys new. there will always be retards in any society
>>
>>28633581
You realize someone has to buy new cars for used cars to exist right?
>>
>>28633581
not buying some else's farted in car
>>
>>28635562
why do you ask questions you give the answers to? why am i asking questions i already know the answer to?
>>
>>28633581
>used 1-2 years old for half the price
not the case for Toyotas
could be scratched up, higher mileage, and you'll maybe get a discount of a couple grand
and you might not get as a good of interest rate for financing and you may also lose out on warranty
But I get where you're coming from, I'd much rather get a more interesting car that is older for the same price of a nu-econobox, just gotta be prepared for other costs
>>
>>28633581
If nobody bought them new, there would never be used ones available dumbass.

The vast majority of people who do so are people in their 50s or older who:
>Have good enough credit scores for the APR to be pretty good
>Have enough money for the price difference to not matter much
>Have little wrenching knowledge/interest/time so the manufacturer/dealer warranty is a good deal
>Want to impress their friends at the country club/senior center/football game/HOA meeting
>Literally never lose traction or put the pedal to the metal and thus don't care about sports car performance
They also have irrational fears of stooping down into a car seat, being low to the ground, and getting in an accident in a small car, which is the real reason why new shitboxes are all SUVs/cuckovers (tendency to flip in accidents be damned)
>>
>>28633581
Its always incredible to me how much people who don't give a fuck about cars spend on cars.
They'll probably give some fake npc reasoning about used cars breaking down constantly (they don't) but the real reason is that they do it because its a social norm, and its a social norm because of marketing.
>>
>>28635683
I don't even mind new cars, but if you're going to buy new let it be something interesting.
I'd rather spend $65k on a new BMW than $35k on a new fucking camry where I could have picked up an older model for $15k that does the same exact job of transporting people from point A to point B
I refuse to buy brand new econoboxes whose entire purpose is fulfilled by a plethora of used cars for a fraction of the price
>>
>>28635693
I've had a 1990 Cressida, 2012 i30, 2010 Mazda 3, and a 2007 Aurion.
None ever had mechanical issues except for the Cressida which was just a broken thermostat.
You know how I churned through them?
Retards running into me in stop start traffic or at traffic lights. Except for the Aurion, the paint was just embarrassingly fucked on that one.
If I spent over 5k on any of those cars I'd probably want to kms.
>>
>>28635693
cool story bro. did you know that the bmw x5 lets you adjust the volume by twirling your finger? can't do that in a used car

>What's the mentality of people who buy brand new econoboxes?
"I need a car to get places and I don't really want to deal with a used car."

A person who buys a brand new econobox to just drive places with no preconceptions is not a dumb driver, they see cars as a necessary problem to solve and this is the easiest way to solve the problem. They can go earn more money to compensate.

Right now, the ideal econobox is a Corolla Hybrid. Add eAWD for some extra push in the snow or even just wet weather. They get so much MPG that they pay for themselves in fuel cost alone.
>>
>>28635708
>Retards running into me in stop start traffic or at traffic lights.
I basically covered the back of my shitbox with The Tape because of how bad the problem is. The hatch still closes but the rear bumper cover is fucked. If the driver doesn't notice, their ADAS suite in their crossover definitely will slam on the brakes when it can practically detect the reflective tape from a quarter mile away.
>>
>>28635683
>Its always incredible to me how much people who don't give a fuck about cars spend on cars.
Peer pressure is a bitch, especially if it's your ego doing the shit-talking.

My car looks awful from the clearcoat being literally blown apart from the high winds on the prairies and mountains. A new car is not high on the list of things to attain. Not having a car payment keeps an enormous amount of money open to save, spend, or invest for other uses.

That sonata actually looks kind of nice. The EU fucked car design with their 2008 "pedestrians must feel comfy when hit" legislation, but hyundai seems to have finally found the sweet spot.

Midwit detected.
German cars are made for leasing because they fall apart after 3 years. If you actually *buy* a BMW you're an even bigger idiot than the guy buys a new Camry. They'll enjoy 10+ years of low cost transportation while you're eating 60% depreciation and a new repair bill every 10k miles.
>>

$40k isn't a lot these days. What gets me is the people driving $50k RAV4's who can't comprehend why somebody would spend $60k on on a 400hp luxury pickup truck.

kek this
according to normies:

Yeah anyone who thinks $30k is the difference between being poor and being wealthy outs themselves instantly as a retard
if youre so concerned about money buy a $5k shitbox and be done with it

Because driving old cars without a special license will be illegal, and because sourcing parts for old cars is almost impossible now. So just move on from your ancient 2008 Corolla already.

That new car has been farted in, guaranteed. From the moment it leaves the assembly line to when you drive it away, there's probably a dozen asses in that seat before you, maybe more.
>>
It's a great solution for the daily driver problem. That initial purchase sucks but it's an investment. You buy a new Elantra for 28k and drive it for 3-4 years and then it's only worth 20k, oof. But you trade it in on another new one and now your monthly payment is only like $100-150 bucks. You can just keep trading them in and you never pay more than 200 a month. If all you care about is having a reliable dependable means of transportation then it can't be beat.
>>
>>28635515
This. A couple grand in savings is not worth the gamble of dealing with whatever retarded shit the previous owner did during break-in, probably following the factory service intervals (probably 10K+), running it through scratch 'n shines getting the paint all nice and swirly, farting in the seats and having kids in the back sticking candy between the seat cushions, etc. You'll also have the privilege of replacing the tires and brakes imminently, so, oops! There goes that couple grand worth of savings.

No you can't, econoboxes hold their value well in those first couple of years
>>
New Cars have sales incentives like warranty and cheaper financing.

2-3 year cars are cheaper but more dated and lack cheap financing/warranty.

Car prices usually depreciate the most when a new generation of the model is out and the Camry becomes 'dated' in that way.
