How dumb am I to buy a n55 e92 ~100k miles? No n54 available in my area. I want a fun 300hp stock daily with hydraulic steering. E46 is too old and weak. It seems that if there is record of needed maintenance, it should be sound. I could buy a B58 car, but after trying it out it felt soulless. Just want something with soul before I eventually jump to a g20. I just want a combination of something powerful enough, comfortable with nice interior (for a 3 series) with fun steering factor. Nothing comes close.

let us know when you have to drop the subframe to replace the oil pan gasket on a car this old just to spin a rod bearing 10k miles later
>>

>Nothing comes close.
there's no lack of 300hp sedans out there that are comfy and fun to drive.
>>
>>28635940
I can do that job and will probably do that job the week I buy it if it isn't documented. I'm not some zoomer fuck who redlines the car daily and doesn't wait until the engine is warm. As I said I have the cash for a b58 car so preventive maintenance is nothing for me. I could even bear a rod bearing change.
>>
>>28635981
Same generation we're talking about a slow c350 on par with a 328 (rofl) and an Audi S4 which is even less reliable, newer generations you have to compare them to B58 which don't come close

why does it need to be european?

G37
Grear hydraulic steering
Available with a great manual
Double wishbones in the front, unlike BMW
Every manual model has an LSD as standard, a lot of automatics on the market have the sport package as well, unlike g*rmans who jew you out on LSDs
>inb4 something about le plastics being slightly less soft than g*rmans, at least they don't start peeling after 10 years
>inb4 something about le niggers, if a car still drives fine after being neglected by the melaninated population, instead of throwing a hissy fit after you change the oil after 8003 miles instead 8000, then it only means good things about the car
>>
>>28635998
You’re looking at a 15yo used sports car that is known for being abused by kids. If you have the time and money to deal with age and consequences, go for it. I listed consequences and why I wouldn’t repair and drive those cars. Your question was how dumb you are for considering this type of car - you got my opinion. Maybe I don’t understand what is so soulful about hydraulic power steering.
>>
>>28635848
my friend has probably spent close to 3 and a half grand just on parts for repairs (not maintenence) in the past 2 years because shit keeps breaking and his cars only done 85,000 miles
trash car
>>
>>28636061
I can second this as a Z33 owner. The VQ35/37 are solid engines on good platforms. the interior isn't as ""luxury"" as the German equivalent but surely you aren't some faggot or woman that is going to obsess over that, right?
Over 8 years of ownership of my Z33 as my daily I've spent maybe 4-5k at most for all maintenance/repairs - including a new AC compressor lol, the G37/370z are not much different

Good post, pre-EPS Infiniti is great
>>
>>28635998
>I can afford a b58
Then buy a b58 that hasn't been abused and with a warranty. Any used n55 will be a timebomb

>How dumb am I to buy a n55 e92 ~100k miles?
Just get a manual E92 328i. 85% as fast, better handling and 300% more reliable.
>I'm not some zoomer fuck who redlines the car daily and doesn't wait until the engine is warm
The last owner might have done so. The N55 makes power down low so effortlessly that you can drive it hard on cold oil without even thinking you're doing any damage.
>>
Giulia you dumb idiot.
You will be surprised just how good EPS can feel.
No idea why retards STILL opt for soulless nuBMW

Not OP, but if they were available with a 6spd in NA I would consider it
>>
Not OP, but how do you differentiate an E92 with the N54 vs. N55?Friend of mine wants one, and maintaining isn't really a big issue. Is there a Vin number to lookout for that designates an N55 under the hood? And does the car need some 3k in work to weed out potential issues before it's (likely) driven hard as I've read?

>Not OP, but how do you differentiate an E92 with the N54 vs. N55?
N54 is biturbo, engine cover is elongated
N55 is single large turbo, engine cover is wide (might say TwinPower Turbo, but that's referencing the variable geometry turbo)

Also check the model year, depending on if it's a coupe, sedan or whatever, they'll have overlapping years:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_N55#Versions
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_N54#Versions
>Is there a Vin number to lookout for that designates an N55 under the hood?
Not sure
>Friend of mine wants one, and maintaining isn't really a big issue.
You better make sure that it isn't an issue at all.
>And does the car need some 3k in work to weed out potential issues before it's (likely) driven hard as I've read?
It's an open deck block. It's not an B58 so no "JUST BOOST IT BRO", it'll need serious work and maintenance.
Here's the usual N55 suspects, in no particular order because my Hans-ass got zhe Flu:
>Leaking valve covers, Oilfilter-housing gasket and fucked Crankcase Ventilation might lead to oil consumption of up to a liter (quart) per 1000km (600 miles)
>Waterpump likes to fail because its a plastic piece of shit impeller
>VANOS Mag-Valves are CONSUMABLES
>High Pressure Fuel Pump especially on early N55 models
>Cams
>Chains, GUIDES AND TENSIONER
>BEARINGS, EVERY SINGLE FUCKING BEARING IN THAT ENGINE IS A LITTLE SATAN
>Coked up inlet valves because it's a DIRECT INJECTION engine
>Injectors might need cleaning
>CHECK AND REPLACE THE OIL PUMP, SECURE IT WITH A SECURITY WIRE ON THE NUT
You are going to ignore all oilchange interval recommendations bar this one: change your oil every 4 to 5'000 km (not miles, km) OR once a year, whichever comes first.
You are going to let the car idle 10 to 15 minutes before shutting it down to let the oil cool or you will fuck up your turbo, it's a MECHANICAL OIL PUMP and it goes out when the engine stops.
There's a few other points, but this will get you started.

Thank you anon. I'll pass this info along. He'll be doing some work on it but prolly paying for others. As will I no doubt. He has an E46 328i that he daily's. This might change his mind though. He likes to drift and has a budget.

>High Pressure Fuel Pump especially on early N55 models

How early is early models? Been looking at coupes specifically, maybe a vert. Any year I can find one though not thrashed and trashed already.
>>
>>28639179
>How early is early models?
I'm not entirely sure, '09 to '11 I guess. That's why I recommend replacing it anyways.
>He has an E46 328i that he daily's
Bro struck diamonds and is fishing for rusty steel. Why?

He got it for $500. It's a good car. M package, manual. But cheap cars come with cheap car problems. His first beemer and he's been hooked since. I'm born and raised GM so I'm clueless about the ups and downs of BMW ownership, but with it's current deferred maintenance, bar necessities, it's held up quite well. I have a new respect for early 2k BMWs. But I think he wants to upgrade to more power. I myself want to as well, but later. I'll be having to help or fix it eventually, so I wanna know the headache ahead of time myself.
>>
>>28635848
Driving an n55 bmw is like dating a stripper. Extremely high maintenance, expensive taste, prone to breakdowns, and you have a sinking feeling that every 20 something dude in town has taken her out for a drive.
If you can find one thats a single owner, and well maintained, they are great cars.
>t. Prior E88 owner (2011)
>>
>>28639541
Thing is, BMWs were never shit, it's just that people didn't read the maintenance handbooks and just winged it or completely skipped maintenance. We would call it an layer 8 problem in my field of work.
If you keep up, they'll drive you to the end of the world and back.
>>
>>28640554
>trust me bro, rod bearings being a maintenance item is a good thing
>>
>>28640689
And why do the rod bearings need replacing?
Because morons like you don't keep up with maintenance like oil+filter changes, oil pumps, chains, guides, tensioners.
Also you put tires with new sticky as fuck compounds on them that didn't exist when the cars were being designed, which causes micro-oil starvations in corners, under g-forces these old cars were never made to endure in the first place. If you gonna hammer the car, the least you could do is to get a baffled sump, cheap ass.
>>
>>28636020
Europeans cars are great, just a circle here in 4chan with so many poorfags.Either get a newer one, or get one with service history, or just fix the main usual things on it,
the higher the mileage the more you pay for preventive maintenance. It's not rocket science.
Nothing beats interior + comfort + power for a car, if you're not broke.

brother the oil pump requires just as much work to get to as the bearings and it’s more expensive, what kind of maintenance are you doing
