My car’s transmission went out and it’s going to cost more to fix than the car is worth.
>inb4 sticky
That shit has been outdated since Covid. Almost none of those cars are under $5k now.
>>
anything from Dodge
>>
>>28637774
how reliable does the car need to be? the current shitbox road roach selection is limited but you could find a Dodge Avenger or Chrysler 200 for $1,000 I'm sure.
>>
>>28637784
I drive roughly 30 miles, 6 days a week.
>>
>>28637774
probably worth just replacing that transmission. you need to spend like $10k unironically now to get a decent car without issues. $5k days are long gone.
>>
>>28637788
Look for an old RAV4, late 90s or early 2000s models are quite reliable and cheap. easy to work on too, everything is very accessible. don't get the 2.4L ones in the later gens, they consoooooom oil.
>>
Lease some worthless piece of shit car they can't get off the lot so it's $0 down and very little monthly. Try and be in a better place financially in 3 years.
>>
>>28637789
Bought a car off Facebook for 2400 a few months ago, no issues, no lights on the dash, no rust underneath. Not difficult to find a cheap reliable beater if you're not a picky faggot who needs heated seats and Apple carplay
>>
>>28637788
Stop driving so much. If you need to drive this much for your job, the company should be paying for the car and upkeep.
>>
>>28637802
I live in a small rural town. 15 miles one way really isn’t that far.
>>
>>28637800
I bought a car off Facebook for $2200 in 2021. No lights, ran well, reliable model. It lasted 5 months and threw a rod.
>>
>>28637774
>5926 with the frame decocker as indicated by the stainless hammer instead of the more common and much shittier 5946 DAO
Neat.

GM shitboxes are the best shitboxes because they are cheap and easy to fix and tend not to die catastrophically without warning. Toyotas are better cars but everyone knows that so they cost more. Chevy Cobalt or Malibu, Buick Regal or Century, V6 4th gen Camaro if you happen to see one - there is no market for them at all so you can get one that runs with an unkillable 3800 for <$3k

Nissan sunny 2012
GMC Yokun 1997-2006
Hunday Elentra 2012-2016
Ford Crown Victoria - any year

those (from my own eyes) are cars that refuse to fucking die or break
dunno about their prices though, but should be cheap
>>
>>28637884
>Ford Crown Victoria
>refuses to break
I know this shtick comes from their use as taxis and police cars, but this isn’t true in my experience. I owned an 02 Grand Marquis and an 05 Towncar. I religiously maintained them as I do all my vehicles. The Grand Marquis’s engine randomly lost all oil pressure and seized on the highway at 175k miles and the Towncar’s transmission went out at 195k miles.

You can sometimes find 2WD Cherokees for cheap in decent condition. The 4.0L engines and even the AW4 auto transmissions last pretty much forever. If you can find one that isn't rusted out and doesn't have 300k miles on it already I think it's an option. The 2WD models aren't really desired and as a bonus most of them aren't beat to hell from offroad abuse. Cons include shit fuel economy and the fact that the newest ones are now 24 years old.
>>
>>28638364
everybody knows those are nice. haven't seen any of those for cheap in years
>>
>>28638375
Probably depends on the market. I was looking for a 4WD one two years ago in central FL and anything that looked nice and was affordable invariably lacked the transfer case shifter in the interior pics. I wouldn't discount it without looking around.
>>
>>28637774
If you can find an old Honda that hasn't been beaten to death by it's owner that's probably your best bet.
>>
>>28637774
in my humble opinion:
8th gen corolla/chevy prism
will run as long as you keep oil in it. some of these seem to be relatively cheap still because there were so many made and the fact that they have a reputation for oil burning.
3rd gen cavalier/pontiac sunfire
100% guaranteed the dashboard will be cracked, and likely some of the plastic dust shields too, but the 2.2l ecotec and trans that come with these are pretty reliable. once met a guy at the auto parts store who said his dad's went to 350k before the timing chain tensioner snapped, which seems to be the main failure point on these. watch out for rust because the subframe and rocker panels on these things are basically made from tin foil.
bonus: they are both chain driven, so no need to worry about any of that timing belt nonsense.

Well, what the fuck do you want? because if all you want to do is drive to and from work, then all you need is a $2000 corolla/civic from 30 years ago.
>>
>>28638911
those are $6,000 now
>>
>>28638930
All the common answers are poisoned by the common answer tax. Camry, Civic, Crown Vic, Buick Century, etc. are all inflated compared to mechanically similar vehicles. Cheap deals now are things people don't immediately know to search for, like a 2007 RDX that sells for less than a 2007 CRV despite being a higher trim of the same car. Chevy Prism, Mercury Grand Marquis, Pontiacs with 3800s, Toyota Avalon, even Lexus ES sometimes.

Found a Toyota Camry for 500$
"
2000 Toyota Camry V6 XLE $500 OBO, needs some work with exhaust. New alternator and battery June 2025, good tires, 274,814 miles.
"
Friend just wreaked there car. What are the chances this gets em to work and back for awhile?

Wtf are you guys seriously driving around in $2000 relics from 20 years ago? I thought you guys liked cars. I don't even really like cars and I wouldn't do that. If I have to be in a car all the time id like it to be kinda nice.
My tranny exploded a year ago and it was like 5k to fix but a new car id want would probably be like $20k so I just fixed it.

Junkyard transmission
“Fix will cost more than the war is worth” is Jewish psyop to appeal to American consumerism, you don’t compare the repair to the value of the car, you compare the repair cost to the cost of a new car or car payment.

With that said I recommend finding a Ford Fusion with the 2.5L engine, I find them on marketplace for around 6-7k in good condition
>>
>>28640176
Anyone who would recommend buying a used Ford Fusion is the last person to take any sort of advice from.

Dunno anon, I had a 2014 fusion that I put 165k miles on. All it needed was regular oil changes, oh and I guess a brake line ruptured once.
Was a fantastic car and I’d still be driving it today had some stoned door dasher not run me off the road last year.
It’s sad ford gave up on them desu.
(Prior to that one I had a 2008 fusion, ex wife had a 2011. Zero issues with either of them as well)
>>
>>28638930

Regardless of price, they still remain reliable, even if most of them are past 200K in miles.

>>28639194

You’re telling me Corollas and Civics are reliable? Thanks for this stunning revelation.

a W126/W124, absolutely dirt cheap, all owned by decrepit boomers, and indestructible. in fact that’s exactly what I did in my youth when I was a brokie
>>
>>28637774
Look at Scions.
They're Toyota adjacent, but everyone thinks they're gay so they get passed up and don't get the Toyota tax.
>>
>>28637800
nigger before Covid I owned 3 cars I bought for less than $1,000 and IMO there’s very rarely anything worth buying under $5k. Maybe a good deal pops up every now and again, but that’s the exception not the rule.
>>
>>28637897
Not to mention they get shit gas mileage, which if you’re this broke, is probably a major consideration.
>>
>>28637774
If you like the car, you fix the car. Any used car you can get for the price of a transmission is going to be a hit or miss proposition. Is it going to last longer than a new transmission? Probably not.
If it’s a crapbox then you’d be doing yourself a favor by finding something else to maintain, but a nice older car is worth turning into the ship of Theseus since it’s cheaper than buying new cars.
