I’m looking at buying a new car in the next 6 months. I really want something with decent adaptive cruise control, I’ve driven my friends Corolla with it and was disappointed in that it brakes too much when someone moves in front of you and won’t get back on the gas, it just slows down until there’s a massive gap between you and you’re going 55 mph on the interstate.

I’ve heard that Subaru’s and Hyundai/KIA’s are a lot better and was curious what your experience has been with different companies.

Ideally I’d want something that can handle stop and go traffic (just the distance between you and the next car, not full hands off self driving or anything). I’ve heard of some that can do that, but forget which company it was.

My budget is like ~$30-35k, so no luxury cars or anything.

Pic unrelated

I really enjoy my Kia Sportage's hands free. It cannot really handle super curvy roads and you still have to manually gear it on winding roads but its nice to have and you only need to wiggle the steering wheel every 60 seconds to keep it running but oddly when it disengages there's no warning or chime it just pulls out of the lane suddenly which isn't good but it doesn't make you stare directly ahead there's no camera monitoring you
they also have an hda 2 system now in the newer cars im not precisely sure how it differs
it can handle stop and go my issue is it gets way too close to the car in front of you - but maybe that's been fixed with hda2

>massive gap
A Corolla can do that? The ACC's range seems very short compared to some other cars.
Even at the max setting, it sometimes drives way too close and gets the car sprayed with dirty water and slush.

Yeah, for me it would just slow down way too much. It wasn’t turning off because it would stop slowing at like 55 or 60 and the person in front is going 80 mph.

hondas is good

Subaru's are good. It dosnt handle sub 30 km/h speeds at all, its the minimum it can go but on the highway its great and easy to use and take control of. Just dont use it in heavy traffic and its fine.

Has it gotten better? I only have experience with it on a 2018 accord and it does the thing OP is complaining about where it slows way the fuck down if someone merges in front of you.

>and Hyundai/KIA’s are a lot better
Why aren't older ones on the road still?
Could it be the only thing that has changed is advertising?

VAG Adaptive system is 9/10 in my opinion. Sometimes it has issues reading traffic signs in tight corners, but thats about it. Mazda's is too careful.

Anyways, a Golf GTI or VW Tiguan could serve you.

My ‘09 Sonata is going strong at 215k.
Werks on my machine.

Ford's latest one is surprisingly good. The new version on 2025 models, mind you. Old one is trash. Toyota's is too twitchy, likes to brake too early too often for little or no good reason. I don't have experience with any others.

kia/hoondai is the best!!!!!!

I've only driven the 2024 civic, I think it does that but it's not exactly slamming on the brakes or anything, just trying to get back the distance it had before

None. It's failed by design.

if you use the cruise control you don't actually like driving your car.
reaching for the cruise control is a 'damn i wish this thing would shut the fuck up so i can zone out' reaction.
>>
>>28642206
Yeah that’s pretty much what I want when I’m going 70 mph in a straight line for 3-4 hours straight.

It's been pretty bad in my experience, has very harsh steering overcorrection that can happen when it doesn't read lanes properly. Created a scary near misses with a newer Cupra Formentor.

Regular cruise control is actually okay (conditions apply), but relying on some other retard to choose speed and relying on electronics you can't really control to choose and follow the right retard is outright dangerous.

I had to drive a rental Audi a couple of years ago. The adaptive cruise control itself was excellent. Kept a good distance and didn't make any sudden moves.
Where the lane assist worked, it too was pretty good. I didn't even realize it was enabled at first since it was so subtle, at least compared to some old Toyotas where it makes the steering wheel horribly stiff and bounces between the lines as if trying to play Pong with the car.

Where it didn't work, well, it failed badly. I think it couldn't see the worn out markings on one particular rural road, and kept mistaking the very narrow road for a single lane. It even produced a decent amount of steering force trying to keep the car in the middle of the "lane".
Problem is, the road was so curvy and hilly that if the car had been in the middle of the road at the wrong spot, and someone had come from the other direction, there would have been no time to react before a crash.
Stopping anywhere might have resulted in someone rear-ending the car, so I got an interesting exercise in multitasking---trying to fight the lane assist while driving down the somewhat challenging road at a decent speed, while trying to turn off the head-on collision assist function via the touchscreen. I found it eventually and enjoyed the rest of the trip.

Yeah I intend to turn off any steering assists. I’ve never heard any good about any of them.

Most adaptive systems also like to nearly floor it if you're going below setting when you change lanes in to an open lane. Say car in front is doing 10 below your setting, you move over, no cars ahead in new lane, car wants to get to set speed as fast as it possibly can. It doesn't really matter on dry roads but if there's any snow/ice, I turn off cruise before lane changes now.

Yup. There might be settings for it in buried somewhere in the menus.
And at least in some hybrid Toyotas, the drive mode setting (that mainly affects the throttle response) seems to change how aggressive the cruise control is. In "eco" drive mode, the cruise control is noticeably slower to accelerate and barely goes above 2k RPM unless trying to reach a high speed going uphill. In "sport", it's a lot more aggressive.
The "eco" mode is actually quite nice in winter conditions, as it makes it a lot harder to accidentally spin the wheels. Flooring the pedal still produces the same result, so I guess it just applies some kind of response curve to the throttle-by-wire.

thats different feature and its off automaticly at least in my skoda
