Why aren't these things more popular?
>>
what's the appeal?
just seem to be a slightly better looking Beetle. still a Beetle.
>>
They are very popular? They are just rare. Same with squarebacks.
>>

yeah idk its so weird this hideous underpowered shitbox that sells for way too much idk why no one would want one in a country where v8 sports cars cost half its truly shocking
>>
>>28640296
That sure sounded like coping.
>>
>>28640296
You don't buy an old car because it performs well.
>>
>>28640331
Dont worry, this shotbox doesnt look good and has 0 cool factor as well

Looks pretty interesting and cool to me.

Limited numbers so the survivors are collector pieces.

They weren't very performant cars new, but they're like other classic aircooled VWs extremely easy to repair in the field which is the real key to VWs global success. Engine swaps are so quick and easy it was common to have contests at rallys.

They're fun Sunday rides, but like old British sports cars obsolete in every way but as art. They're easy to hop up and engine parts are plentiful. They're ideal for learning to wrench.

Rear engines like that one went away because aircooled VWs were utter deathtraps, but when everything was a deathtrap that wasn't a big deal.

I don't know, I've seen some pretty awesome ones Then I go to a lot of VW shows, what I've seen...

It's interesting to me how the same designer/design firm made the same body style half a dozen times. Always looked like the cousin of the Volvo P1800. And maybe an old Rolls Royce with those whiskers and haunches.
>>
Who didn't/doesn't like them? They're iconic
>>
>>28640255
i got the hazard light switch for one of these to wire up in my car that didn't come with them from the factory
>>
>>28640255
Disastrously slow, and ~all of them have a snoot dent because all of them were bought by women when new.
But really yeah you have a point. 2 door, beautiful like those early porsches, and simple, yet cheaper than a shitbug. Might buy one now.
>>
>>28640255
Underpowered and rattly air-cooled boxer engine sounds awful.
The plus is the bodywork and styling, no doubt.
Good candidate for an engine swap, but I'd rather have a Volvo P1800 if going for that style.

>>28640255
Literally a Beetle with a body kit.

There have been plenty of rear engined cars, most of the mass market ones are still sold for cheap. 911 are the exception, and to some degree it's a rather recent event, you were able to buy air cooled ones for like 1/4 of today's price not long ago.
Personally I think something like the Fiat 850 is more interesting. A 2 meter wheelbase (<80 inches) is just nuts.
>>
I always wondered if they got the front grille things from the Porsche 356.

dash is more limited
always needs new seats
power steering is a mb
