It's looking like the head gasket is gonna go on my shitbox Prius. My budget is about 16k. I was considering a Wrangler TJ, but they're too old and too few these days, considering the average mileage on them. I need something with 4WD cuz the winters are bad where I am. Looking for something rugged and sovlful. Any suggestions (no slop like Hyundais, please)?
>>28640889You can get a nice 4runner for that
>>28640889Replacing a head gasket is just a bolt job. It sounds like a big deal but you don't even need to do anything with the car or take anything off besides the head itself. Get a new set of bolts (original equipment or mahle or PQY, would be my recommendation, it's a prius you don't need ARP studs), a decent multi-layer steel gasket (check rockauto), then all you have to do is just follow the factory service manual for torquing to spec (you can find downloads online if you look, links tend to be shared on forums). So then ~200 dollars and an afternoon (half that if you already have a calibrated wrench) will give you a whole car back.
>>28640889Toyota Highlander. Not sure if that's soulful enough for you; but its a good SUV and you don't pay through the nose for them as bad as you do for 4runners.
>>28641586While I do want to learn how to work on cars, I'm bone-tired of my Prius and am looking for any excuse to get rid of it. The thing is a cockroach - put through hell and back by my Mom (she was a curb-swiping & fender bender pro) before she handed it down to me. It now resembles something you'd see a drug dealer driving in North Philly. The bumper is hanging off, and every panel on it is damaged. It's a sore spot for my pride, in other words.
