So you finally caught up to '90s V8 numbers.....soooo impressive. Too bad it's worse than a 30 year old 305hp V8 due to having less torque and sounding like shit. Plus it's probably in a modern bloatmobile and auto only. Shit's gayer than aids son.

the 3.6 liter Pentastar V6 as found in the wildly successful, timeless, classic American muscle car, the Dodge Challenger SXT.

>>28641251
Chrysler officially states 90% of peak torque is available from 1600 to 6400 rpm. the torque curve is almost perfectly flat with absolutely no drop off in thrust until the engine smacks into the limiter. it's like driving a jet engine.

pentastar sounds amazing with the challenger's x-duals and an intake thoughbeit
>>
>>28641029
Pointless. the Challenger's a pig, built on a 4-door sedan chassis. The V6 worked in the Camaro because it was a light, decent handling package to begin with and the V6 made it even better.
>>
>>28641029

because for a little bit more you could get a Hemi and they put that in something that weighs as much as a house.

had they dropped that in something like the FWD Dart or someone put it in a Miata or MR2 now we're talking.

>>28641274

There were only a handful of American V8s making over 300hp in the 90s factory, Corvette LT1, Mustang Cobra DOHC 4.6, everything else was 225-270hp. Hell, the Mustang GT 4.6 could get smoked by most 4-cylinder Jap coupes, my V6 Probe could gap one.
>>
>>28641283
the camaro and challenger are basically a single american fatbody apart in mass, and while i do agree the camaro is an amazing car with the v6, the challenger reaps the same benefits like a lighter front end and sharper throttle response while also having a superior suspension design that offsets its mass. the chally handles like a much smaller car than it is.
>>
>>28641029
In a 5000 lbs vehicle it sucks.
>>
>>28641297
The Northstar had both 275hp and 300hp versions(SLS vs STS) and the Mark VIII LSC was right behind at 290hp. There was also the 330hp LT4 and the LS1 debuted in '97 so almost 30 years ago too.
>>
>>28641276
You can keep pushing your “v6 muscle car” narrative all you want, but deep down you know that it’s not one. Unless it’s got a Hemi, it’s a wannabe. I don’t care about your power per liter argument, it’s still slower and does not have the power potential of the 5.7 or 6.4.

Let me be clear here, when I say Hemi, I’m referring to the actual V8 “Hemi” cars like the R/Ts and above. Getting pedantic about what constitutes an actual Hemi based on head design is a poor attempt at moving the goal post. It’s common knowledge that the “Hemi” badge is more marketing than anything at this point. Head design has come a long way from the “real” Hemis. The main takeaway here is that the 3.6 is a perfectly fine, base engine and should be treated as such. Nothing more, nothing less

You can wish and disagree all you want. You literally cannot have a hemispherical combustion chamber with a 4 valve design using a conventional valvetrain setup. Hence why the DOHC hemi used a pent roof. Your car has pent roof and crescent shaped combustion chamber, again it's 0% hemi.
>>28641786
>all you did is demonstrate that you're wrong and know nothing about engines
The irony is unreal, what a retard. You implied your car is based off some race engine when pent roofs date back to the early 1900s and are a common fast burn design.

3.6 hp/l = 85%
5.7 hp/l = 69%
5.7 has cheese cam, mds, low oil pressure, iron block, 55:45 distro
3.6 is the superior car

sure if i was going to drag race it, 5.7 mite be cool but that's it. you can't daily a 5.7, you'll eat the cams. or you can do all this cam work to make it last and disable mds or buy a manny or specific model year or trim or tune box or buy the 6.2 or 6.4 or a Ram 1500 or cope cope cope cope. shut the fuck up and buy the 3.6.
v6 needs no additional work to be a good solid reliable car. it's the same ecu and air/fuel metering as the hemi so it goes faster if you so much as look at it funny. maybe needs a thermostat and a tazer to get at the srt fun stuff but that's it. you might not win a drag race with the faster version of yourself, but you will absolutely will win le mans, and at 500 miles to a tank you'll be able to drive home afterwards.

coping about being a heckin wheelstanding dragstrip king in your 13 second v8 is way lamer than just enjoying a comfy reliable and lively 14 second v6

combustion chambers are round because cylinders are round because pistons are obviously also round

"hemispherical" refers to the cross-section of the combustion chamber not the roundness of its "face"

You’re trying too hard. More useless metrics like hp/liter which means absolutely nothing when you’re getting gapped by a 5.7. It’s also interesting to note that my 5.7 powered Ram that I used to daily has 150k miles on it now and it’s just as quiet as the day I drove it off the lot back in 2017. Almost like that issue is overblown and doesn’t affect every 5.7. Similar story to the 392 I used to have, 65k miles on the clock and it had no lifter tick when I got rid of it.

Keep coping about the only differences being at the drag strip. All that power down low and throughout the rev range makes it that much nicer to drive in traffic. You get power now instead of waiting for the transmission to downshift and the engine to wring itself out. But whatever, you got me to reply. Here’s your (You)

and then it was fucking incredible. an uncanny snappiness, incredible throttle response, ultra fast shifting, nice tight, direct steering, as if it could read my mind.

the v8 drove like the boring slow piewce of shit i was thinking the v6 would be albeit it was "fast" it drove like a taxi or a pickup truck. you step on the gas in a stock hemmay and nothing fucking happens for a whole second it seems. then the engine lurches forward with seemingly infinite force like a huge retarded dog before being yanked back by a physics leash around 4000 rpm. the V6 on the other hand would just scream all the way to redline and still want to keep pulling as it smacks into the limiter. driving them side by side the v6 was the obviously superior choice.

I will say this, my dad let me drive his rental charger back to the rental place and I though it was amazing. So much faster than my crown Vic, the engine sounded great. I just stepped on the gas and it fucking went

I kept thinking, "holy shit I need to get a v8 charger or chrysler 300 when I'm done with my Vic". Only after getting home and checking the paperwork with my dad did I realize it was just the base model v6.

The Chrysler Pentastar V6 engine blew my Ford 4.6L 2-valve engine out of the water. I don't want to admit this, but it's true.

The idea of having a car that much quicker than my crown vic but that also gets 30mph on the highway is very tempting

>>

She had some foot condition months ago causing her to wobble and stumble and the other hens started attacking her. I've lost a lot of hens because the others saw them as "weak" and ostracized them so I've kept this one alone - better than dead. Chickens are brutal. I let 'er out several times a day, treat her foot several times a week, and made an outdoor daytime pen for her. I'm trying to reintegrate her but she always gets attacked.

6-speed v6 challys allegedly existed as test mules but the primary issue was the EPA. Chrysler was doing this dumb shit where they would certify a small number of drivetrain/transmission combos and use the same drivetrain in every possible car, saving development and certification costs between platforms.
A manual V6 Challenger would have needed its own variant of the TR6060 or a different manny tranny entirely, with a different bellhousing than the hemi and that would have been a unique drivetrain exclusively for that car, used nowhere else, which kind of ran counter to this scheme. It's likely they still would have done it if the general take rate was high enough on manual cars, but it would have still been a very expensive option rather than "standard".
>>

>A manual V6 Challenger would have needed its own variant of the TR6060 or a different manny tranny entirely, with a different bellhousing than the hemi and that would have been a unique drivetrain exclusively for that car.
Couldn't they have used a version the manual that the Wrangler has with the Pentastar? Like the one I have 10 yards away from me >>28641417 ? You can say packaging but the Chally is huge and weighs the same as a 2-door Wrangler.
I've driven automatic Wranglers with the same engine and it's a noticeable difference - the Pentastar likes to be revved a little.

from people on forums i've heard who've tried to actually do a swap, apparently the casing of the wrangler's gearbox is just a little too thick and weirdly shaped for the thin tunnel in the LX-body that is designed around the ZF8/NAG1 dimensions.

zf from a wrango for comparison. the autos and tr6060 have this thin barrel where the wrangler's nsg is thick and bulky.
>>
>>28645756
Damn, what a shame. The Chally's 8-spd auto is better at WOT flat-out, but the engine really benefits from manual in most other use cases imo - if you're hanging around 3-4k there is gobs of torque available even with mild throttle.
>>
>>28645758
i tend to agree, i mostly drive in full manual mode because the auto tcm is kind of pessimistic. in manual you can pull 8th at 43 mph and idle down the road using no gas at all at barely 1000 rpm, while the auto mode holds 7th until 55. i don't really miss having a clutch pedal except for losing the ability to spin the rear tires without stopping to brakestand first.

the Challenger has much better chassis balance but is heavier and you should budget for a Hellcat diff swap if you're chasing perfect handling (<$1,000).
the Z is a little better equipped from the factory, but doesn't handle quite as well as the Challenger, making up for that with its shorter wheelbase. You might also consider budgeting for a diff swap if you're looking at cars over 50k miles because the Nissan VLSD likes to wear out fast. The Challenger's clutch LSD on the other hand is very durable but also noisy.

the "r35" gtr isn't a muscle car it's a supercar, but R34 and previous are all just hopped-up versions of a normal family car and are thus muscle cars by your own definition.

if you wanna call pony cars muscle cars that's your business
>>
>>28646773
I hate to break it to you, anon, but you're talking with more than one person.
>>
>>28646764
a muscle car, defined by example, is an oversized sports car based on a sedan or hardtop coupe chassis whose primary handling characteristic is high power offset by high mass and a lot of inertia, creating a very tail happy car that is driven by using the throttle to turn, an act usually referred to as "muscling" the car around the corner.
"muscle" has literally nothing to do with what engine is in the car or how much power it makes, it's the old-school 1930's elbows-out style of driving that they encourage with high power and high mass. the muscle in the car is in fact the driver.
>>
>>28646796
nobody i've ever talked to defines muscle cars this way. i think this is a personal definition you like and made up yourself.

which is fine, but it's a personal definition.
>>
>>28646777
pony cars are a subset of muscle cars and fall under the same technical umbrella because they're made the same way. the mustang was based on the falcon, the barracuda was based on the valiant.

>the fact of the matter is my definition covers all possible muscle cars from every culture on the planet
you're saying this as if that makes the definition useful. i could do this just as easily by saying that a muscle car is any car that's fast and makes loud noises, or a muscle car is any 2+2 performance car. neither of those definitions are specific or useful, and yours has an additional failure by being personally-oriented. saying that muscle cars are cars that "force you to muscle corners" is just like me saying that muscle cars are cars that "make cool noises." what is "cool?" what constitutes "muscling a corner?" if you can take corners too easily are muscle cars not muscle cars anymore?

i could just as easily say that muscle cars are any car with four wheels and a v8. the fact of the matter is my definition covers all possible muscle cars from every culture on the planet, while the benchracing definition is just brandwhore cope and faggotry that requires 11 extra addendums for edge cases every time someone posts it.

But the Roadster is the traditional Morgan chassis, naturally aspirated, and manual.
>>
>>28646847
>if you can take corners too easily are muscle cars not muscle cars anymore?

yes exactly, that's called a sports car
a muscle car is a type of sports car that trades handling precision for stronger power delivery. you actually do drive a muscle car completely differently than a more dedicated sports car platform because you're having to work with the additional mass of the big engine and body to do the same thing. muscle cars can have good handling but as a rule they don't "handle good", instead the point is to exploit their oversteery nature to corner effectively. cars that behave in this way are definitely muscle cars.

>i could just as easily say that muscle cars are any car with four wheels and a v8
yes well that would include such gems as the 3rd gen Taurus SHO and 6th gen Monte Carlo SS which aside from being fwd, are already most of the way to a muscle car. i don't actually disagree with that statement at all but others might. fwd cars tend to not fit my definition because of the lack of muscle-like handling dynamics that practically require a rwd or rear biased awd car
>>
>>28646867
>yes exactly, that's called a sports car

the R-series GT-R's high mass and distinctly oversteery handling characteristics make it absolutely a muscle car, in fact the only reason it is good at turning is the fact it can put a lot of power down to all four wheels.
the Eldo is not strictly a muscle car because they are so luxurious the performance is compromised. The Eldorado and other cars like it are actually Personal Luxury Coupes. This is, like pony cars, a subset of muscle cars, but on the opposite end of the fat fuck spectrum.

unrelated but there is actually a service company called Pentastar Aviation that was formed from the remnants of the original Chrysler Corporation's aircraft manufacturing arm. As for the engine, someone made a post 6 years ago on plebbit claiming they were trying to do exactly that, but i don't imagine they got very far because i can't find any other info or anybody else attempting it.

it might be more of a packaging thing than practicality. the ls1 is kind of a squat motor and you can see how tall it made the cowling on that one. the pstar is a 60-degree and is much taller than the hemi when placed in the same car, so i can't imagine how you could fit a pstar into that ls1 plane without some part of the engine sticking out of the cowling. that said it's lighter than the ls1 by over 100 lbs and would probably make a fine airplane engine.

the fact that planes fly and cars don't. they're a form of private aircraft, not a form of car.

if you think that everything is exactly what some retard decides to name it then you're one of the most gullible people on earth and fall for marketing and propaganda daily.

>the fact that planes fly and cars don't
anon cars fly all the time even when they're not supposed to

>if you think that everything is exactly what some retard decides to name it
>they're a form of private aircraft, not a form of car.
as already established, car is short for carriage, and a carriage does not necessarily have to have wheels or be confined to the ground. thus, an airplane is also a carriage or car, or as we might more scientifically call it an aero-plane carriage denoting its use of aerodynamic planes or "wings" instead of wheels.

Reading this thread is melting my brain. I’m fully convinced that challyanon is not only coping for his purchase, but also completely idiotic and not just le ebic trolling with how long this thread is and the shit that is spewed out. Like a car in the air from driving off an incline is “flying”. Can humans fly by running off a hill or cliff? He’ll say some horse shit like a wing glider suit but it doesn’t matter because it’s so irrevelant to talking about some stupid cope engine
>but it’s two or three different anons
I find that hard to believe that they are more than one person who cares about a dead base model car engine to make threads about
>>
>>28647219
>Can humans fly by running off a hill or cliff?
for a very short period of time at speeds over mach 1 a human body without any airfoils or aerodynamic assistance can in fact create enough lift to fly.

You know what? That’s actually a cool fact
>>28647226
I actually like talking about engines and think V6’s get a bad rap because Americans are use to them being base model engines for Mustangs, Camaros and other similar class of cars. I think it’s neat, and I’ll admit that I don’t think it’s just Challyanon shitting up the thread but also some of his detractors
>>
>>28647232
V6's get a bad rap explicitly and exclusively because of Ford who insisted on using the fucking garbage ass 1970s era smogshit Essex in the Mustang when they had the superior Vulcan and Duratec in their family cars.
the GM 60-degree and Chrysler LH have always been respected because you get basically the same engine in every car with the same power no matter what you're buying.
Ford was the only company to deliberately hobble their V6 muscle cars by supplying them with massively outdated and inferior engines to make the dogshit modular V8 look better. They only woke up and shat out the 3.7 Mustang when Chrysler slapped them in the nuts with the Pentastar Challenger.

The v6 cars are actually where the real product development and interesting engineering occurs, the v8s are cool cars but they're just low volume toys compared to the real sellers. v6 challengers for example outnumber the v8s 4-to-1.

G37 coupe or v6 wally? Which would be better for long trips?
>>
>>28647798
oooohhhh
that's a hard choice
the chally is a god tier croozer. you got the 8 speed box and all the autistic data gauges at your fingertips. the seats are comfy and the driving position is good. it's very spacious from the driver's seat.
the G37 is quite a bit tighter although not as bad as a lexus IS or something. the G37 is more opulent and focused, the Challenger is more utilitarian and spacious. but they both offer the same kind of satisfying bullet train feeling on long drives I guess if that makes any sense.

>>
>>28647870
why would anyone get the chally over a charger? Surely 4 doors is better than 2? Especially if you're just getting a v6
>>
V6WallyAnon did you consider g37 while shopping for Wally? If so why chally over g37?
>>
>>28648695
the Charger is heavier and longer, as well, it doesn't come with true dual exhaust, instead it has a 2-into-1-into-2, Chally has an x-pipe.
also, The Challenger gets more horsepower, the full 305 instead of 298 or 300 flat as in the SXT+ Charger. It doesn't sound like a huge difference but it is a big deal for performance. Combined with the lighter weight it is the perfectLX body.

>V6WallyAnon did you consider g37 while shopping for Wally? If so why chally over g37?
Challenger has perfect 52:48 weight distro while FM platform is more front heavy, g37 is 53 front and Z is 55 front, for reference a V8 Challenger is 54:46. Weight distro matters most because I live in the mountains and an unbalanced car is no fun to drive no matter how much power you have.
Pentastar and VQ37 are practically the same
ZF8 > nigsan automatic and there are adapter plates to put a CD009 on a Pentastar if i really wanted to.

it came down mostly to handling dynamics
i like the lively feel of the challenger, in sharp corners from factory it has a very fun old-school car feeling, like it's actually from the '70s. it likes to rotate under power a lot and really surprisingly doesn't shove or understeer as bad as you'd expect, albeit it will if you are a monkey on the steering wheel. it's a more challenging and fun car to drive fast because it's a little wilder, but it's length and mass give it stability.

the FM cars were technically good but also kind of soulless. the Z i drove was really clean and not modded so it sort of just drove like a rwd altima with very little oversteer moment unless you forced it, mostly tending to a gentle neutral understeer shove that didn't seem to care much how hard i turned in. and this was a premium level manual car with the lsd (might have been fried idk). i didn't actually try a g37 because there wasn't one on the lot, the Z was a good stand in, i feel.

it's a garbage engine made by a garbage company
MOPAR fanboys come from inbred families with lower IQs which is why they put up with MOPAR shit
>>
>>28649083
fun fact: the hemi also eats its own lifters, even faster, since it has low idle oil pressure for emissions. the Pentastar uses the same roller bearings.
allegedly the supplier of the needle bearings in the rollers fucked up and several years of V6 and V8 have problems
mostly fixed after 2014 when the pentastar revisions got underway, hemi still wipes cams though

>Oil coolers made out of plastic
2 stage oil pumps that barely function
Chrysler really does have accountants designing engines.
When you have to cut corners due to insolvency you can't really make something worthwhile.
>>
>>28649097
the oil cooler is plastic on purpose to prevent radiant heat from the oil cooler body from warming the intake passages which are right next to it.

>2 stage oil pumps that barely function
works on my machine
>>
>>28649109
The oil cooler is plastic so dealer ships can charge 1000+ to replace it with an aluminum one when the plastic one inevitably gives out.
>works on my machine
