Now that legacy is dead, what's next for Subaru?

What do you drive, then? Or plan to drive when you get rid of your current subie?

I would buy a 2025 outback wilderness before the generation update if it had a traditional automatic and physical HVAC controls. Literally just those two things completely ruin the car for me.
>>
>>28642333
Nothing. Subaru stopped being interesting in 2010.
>2005-2009: could get impreza, outback, legacy, and forester in turbo+manual trims
>2025: lmao here's your wrx, chud.

I drive a le epic manual 90s Legacy GT wagon, and I will never get rid of it because there's nothing to replace it with.
>>
>>28642468
nta, but a 3rd gen manual OBXT. I'd probably replace the engine/tranny if it dies. If that isn't an option, then get something even older like >>28642482 has or just get some older honda derivative like an integra. Modern cars suck.

As a subaru owner, I don't care. The only thing of interest is their legacy parts program for the gc
>>
>>28642656
Yeah, Ive been seeing it more and more, even in the other cars I test drove that day, but the Toyota and Mazda I drove had much more compact screens and more physical buttons in comparison. What made Subaru in particular go all in?

Chat what do we think. I can't think of a better car <$20k all around. Everything with the same age had 2x the miles.

I went from fantasizing about GC8 STis after a $15,000 v5 Sedan in Tampa kept popping up on my FB, to realizing they're all open diff and a pain in the ass to insure (RHD) and looking at GDBs. Realized the white 2006 I wanted had 7 different POs and it was a "California car" that spent the last 15 years in the Midwest. This came up for sale, realized its half the miles and 10 years less than all the GDBs I was looking at. DMed him within 30 mins of it being posted and I'm gonna go Monday at 9am to check it out.

Prime is a huge Subaru shop in the area, they bought the car from auction with a blown motor, put a 40k mile RA block in it and a ACT HDSS. Mechanically stock with the only mods being I can tell being Perrin Fender Shrouds, JDM Grill, Black Limited BBSs, Wheel Spacers, and *maybe* a Trunk Swap. Its a no sunroof car too, most of the carfax shows it going between Colorado, Montana, and Florida so it should be minty underneath.

I'm crossing my fingers I don't have to do anything to it for the next year but drive it. I was originally fantasizing about GR Corollas and GT350s but I can't justify the $40-50k for one.

Other cars considered: 5.0 S197 Mustangs (pricing weird, the $15k ones have 2x the miles and the lower miles one cost the same $20-25k as S550s). Mk7 Audi S3s (not as fun but ultimately good cars). Miatas (not as exciting, and I can't find a NC2 PRHT in the color I want; $16k gets you a high mileage ND1 though). Not a Corvette or Z guy despite those being 100% faster.

I was gonna do a GD STI but every STi I found for the same money had twice the miles, some level of rust, and more issues

I paid WRX money for a STI
>>
>>28648456
Test drive was pretty uneventful it was a lot of fun to drive, it feels like the older cars just with less rattles and rust. No stories with the paint, I think the car just needs to get driven since the engine was swapped. It pulled great (14-16psi), I did have them take the wheel spacers off because it clipped the corner of the bumper at full lock and unhooked it, didn't want the bumper flapping.

I wanna put the STI badge back on the trunk and the stock blue Subaru badge on the grill (has some stupid black one).

Does need a radio the touchscreen doesn't work and it's tinted purple.
>>
>>28648461
I'm excited I'm probably gonna leave it stock for next year. Body is extremely clean no rust on the pinch welds or anywhere.

Needs the spare tire or spare tire spacer too..

Supposedly has a RA longblock but could be BS no real way to prove it imo.

Not a fan of the aftermarket steering wheel I'm fine that it was returned to stock if the motor is fresh.

Yeah, Subaru died years ago. My GH is about as recent as I'd go.
Subaru got destroyed my Emissions / fuel mileage laws and was to small and too shortsighted to keep their fun cars. What a shame.
That said, they are doing record business with normies so now they know they don't need "enthusiasts." Also a damn shame.
>CAMDEN, N.J., April 1, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Subaru of America, Inc. (SOA) today reported 71,478 vehicle sales for March 2025, a 16.6 percent increase compared with March 2024. March 2025 marked the best-ever sales month in the history of the company, topping the current record set in August 2019 (70,039). SOA also reported year-to-date sales of 166,957, a 9.1 percent increase compared to Q1 2024. March marked the 32nd consecutive month of month-over-month sales increases for the automaker.
>>
>>28649718
Honestly its a lot of fun to drive. I think a lot of the posters here complain of sour grapes + misplaced nostalgia with the newer cars. Subaru is still a very conservative company. It feels like my old GDB WRX Wagon did, but better and tighter all around. It doesn't feel like a big car at all

The doors don't rattle when you slam them, the brakes are a lot stronger, it still has the same sloppy shit shifter like my WRX did at 100k miles, and it has a super linear powerband with zero drama that's honestly *too* easy to hit redline in.

>>28649848
Its like closer to $20-26k here for one. We never got the A45 only the CLA45 then the GLA45. The next cheapest Turbo AWD would've been a 15-16 DSG S3 ($14-23k) or a Mk6 Golf R ($10-16k). I don't think it would be as fun, you can feel the diffs even in street driving, just unlimited traction. And it feels very much mechanical as a experience.

>>
>>28666527
Subaru's have had 3 problems that have sullied perceived reliability. Subaru has the most underrated reliability of any car brand because one of these issues is so widely known it often gets blamed even when it isn't the cause.

The biggest problem are head gasket failures on the EJ25 engines. The early EJ25 engines had a 100% chance of an internal head gasket failure at around 110k miles. Mid 200's the engine with redesigned with improved cooling and now with proper maintenance and the use of the MLS head gasket the issue is mostly avoided but when it does happen it is typically an external head gasket leak. These engines were discontinued around 2010. Note that the EJ22 and the 6 cylinder of the same era were bulletproof engines.

The next well know issue is CVT failures. Subaru's CVT's are fairly robust. The problem is Subaru of America claims the CVT fluid is good for the life of the vehicle and doesn't need to be serviced. They claim this to show lower cost of ownership but it isn't true. Subaru of Japan says to service your CVT every 30k miles. They do have an Issue where a valve body solonoid dies around 80-100k miles. The problem here is that Subaru doesn't sell that solenoid on it's own so the entire valve body gets replaced unless you can source the solenoid. If you can then it's not a difficult or expensive repair.

Their 3rd big problem is their sports car fanbase.

You forgot the fiasco that was the EJ255/EJ257
>filters in oil feed line banjo bolts clog and starve turbo of oil - usually happens around 110-160k.
>catalytic converters in turbo up-pipes that disintegrate and nuke turbo
>oil pickup tube is brazed together and often cracks: starving engine of oil and usually killing main bearings
>screws that hold the oil pump together have tendency to back out and again starve engine of oil
>pistons have little material between ring-lands and piston face leading to cracking
>cylinder 4 runs hotter than the rest which leads to said cracked piston or burnt valves
>stock tune is very lean which means little tolerance to unmetered air like tears in the turbo inlet which can lead to above problems
They addressed the catalytic converter issue in 2007 by deleting it and replacing with a smog pump. But everything else was still a problem, at least in the high volume cars that eventually stopped using the engine altogether. The EJ25 in general was just cursed from the beginning.
>>
>>28667557
EJ257 is immune to the first two since it has a catless uppipe and no banjo bolts. Subaru Turbo EJs do not tolerate unmetered air or any changes to airflow because the tunes run lean and the pistons are weak.

Add to that which is common to ALL EJs: They have very inconsistent oil consumption which leads them to run a quart low from one month to the next (usually in the last 1000-1500 miles of a 3500 mile oil change) which leads to people running them low on oil without realizing. Turbo EJs are hard on oil so you need a high quality 30w bare minimum (if not a 40w) they shear the oil pretty quickly. The bearings don't tolerate a significant amount of abuse (rod knock if you run it low a few times or have detonation events and don't break the pistons) since they have relatively small surface area for a turbo 4 cyl.
>>
>>28666697
I mean, it all depends on your needs. I love my Crosstrek, but I'll get an Outback or a Forester when I have kids.
>>
>>28667574
>EJ257 has no banjo bolts
I didn't realize this. I think they still had them in the AVCS oil feeds, but that was way less critical. Neat.
>Subaru Turbo EJs do not tolerate unmetered air or any changes to airflow because the tunes run lean and the pistons are weak.
Yeah it sucks. I bought a Perrin inlet because it was on sale and know the factory one eventually rips, but am not sure if I want to install it yet despite keeping the intake stock. Has to be better than waiting for the factory one to rip I guess...
>run a quart low from one month to the next (usually in the last 1000-1500 miles of a 3500 mile oil change)
I have noticed this in mine. Everything is usually topped up until 2000 miles, then all of a sudden it will burn a quart by 3500. I'm hoping a high mileage oil and the new PCV helps mitigate it.
>>
>>28667611
I personally recommend M1 0w40 Euro Car. I run that in all my cars that are hard on oil or have older looser tolerances. I used to shill for Rotella but it does foam up and isn't that good in the 2020s vs better oils (think supercharged high output V8s and 100hp/liter turbo 4cyls being the norm with lots of fuel dilution/shearing from DI)

Just check the oil weekly for those last 1000 miles like if its a rotary. Its a mix of the old oil getting oxidized/flashing off from it shearing + leaking, going through the valve seals/rings.

IIRC The inlet might be okay, but if yours isn't torn leave it alone. I know generally you can get away with just ONE (1) mod like either a intake or a catback exhaust (but not both) or a bpv/bov or a inlet or a intercooler on stock tune.

I have seen the AVCS solenoids get clogged/throw codes (P001B/P001D) from debris. I think they might have them there.
>>
>>28667638
Thanks, anon. I'll look into that oil on the next change and yeah I think I'm going to put off the hose until I get around to installing the cylinder 4 cooling loop as a little more insurance.

It's silly I feel like I'm stepping on eggshells with this engine when all I want is for it to just drive reliably: I don't give a shit about more power as it has more than enough.

what mileage should you change the timing belt on a WRX?
>>
>>28668126
The ones with the EJ255 were basically every 105k miles or 9 years - whichever came first.
>>
>>28668132
is spending 30% of the car's value in a single weekend worth it for an '09 WRX because between the belt, water pump, thermostat, clutch + flywheel & throwout bearing, sparkplugs, coilpacks, leaking steering pump, and maybe oil leak that's what's about to happen if it is
>>
>>28668111
The shop that rebuilt my EJ recommends motul and that's all my engine has seen since.

The cooling mod would be worth doing from everything I've read. Throwing equal length headers on would help too (but need tuning). That said, you should look into getting a custom tune if you happen to be close to a recommended Subaru shop. I was shocked at how much a tune changed my car. The entire drivetrain and transmission suddenly felt 15 years newer.
>>
>>28668150
Motul is great oil I just hate how you need to mail order it and its like $50-60 a oil change. If you can get it locally or you're fine paying that stick with it man. I like M1 Euro Car because its $25 and I can get it with my groceries so I'm definitely changing the oil at 3000 miles.

>>28668143
AISIN TKF005 for a WRX is $260

Upper/Lower Radiators + Tstat is $100 at a dealership

Clutch + Flywheel is the expensive part, $1000 in parts at least. Shop usually charges $500-1000.

Coils are probably fine. Plugs are cheap/easy

Leaking steering pump is gonna kill you, $700 for a rebuilt one at the dealer or you chance it with a rebuilt for $250-300. Rack is probably pissing itself too which is another $700 at the dealer.

The only thing I'd sub out to the shop is the clutch/flywheel that sucks on any car without a lift.

Yeah you're gonna be in for at least $3000. Its not horrible assuming the rest of the car is nice. Otherwise consider selling.
>>
>>28668143
If the body/underside/interior is still in nice condition, keeping an '09 WRX going is definitely worth doing assuming you enjoy it.

I need some advice on whether this is a good idea. From what I understand the engine and transmission of this model is great, but I'm worried about the high mileage. I don't care what model or year it is, I'm just after a reliable outback.

$3,200 USD
2011 subaru outback
3.6l 5 speed transmission
165xxx miles
paddle shift
recently serviced
new spark plugs
new injectors
general wear and tear
>>
>>28669768
Test drive it. Spend about 20 minutes getting the transmission warm then Perform some sharp turns at a slow speed. If it starts clunking after the transmission is warm then you have a bad viscous coupling in the center diff. It's a common problem on high mileage manual outbacks because people don't rotate the tires and keep their tread wear even.

I'm in the market for a JDM Levorg and I might as well get an STI.
- (1) the STI have suspension with adaptive "e-Tune" dampers. Are they good or trash? I like the idea of adjusting between comfort or sportier, but don't the adaptive dampers mean I can't change the spring coils as it would upset the computer?
- (2) I have an eye on the 2.5l turbo, but does it worth it to have 270 horsepower when a CVT is the only option?

Just get a Legacy STI S402 for dat 6sp manual
>>
>>28671032
I'm not big into jap cars, but that's a surprisinglöy sharp looking wagon
>>
>>28642333
There is no need for Legacy when Impreza grew up to be the new Legacy.
>>
>>28671043
The 4th gen Legacy was a great design and yea, the S402 are especially nice looking cars. They also came as sedans.

The same white spots everywhere else you retard. Road grime.

I have a 2024 Subaru Legacy limited.
It has the upgraded Harman Kardon sound system but I feel like it's kinda bad... has anyone else had one of these to comment on it? Am I just expecting too much? It's my first car since a 2012 chrysler shitbox that didn't have working speakers.
I often feel like the sound can be muddy or unclear despite there being like 12 speakers. Like there's very little "soundstage".
I like everything else about the car.
>>
>>28672150
Can't you configure it to make it sound the way you like?
>>
>>28672077
That's crazy! It's the flagship model so I thought they were cars but the older models are reasonably sized.
>>
>>28672077
>>28672222
I'm quickly checking the second hand cars. They're either beated up daily drivers or overpriced in mint condition.
>>
>>28671358
Great collection. How's the newer Forester?
>>
>>28672205
It has an equalizer to adjust low/mid/high but that's really it. It's not feature rich
>>
Blew my head gasket while driving my STI like a retard. Wastegate got stuck and overboosted the living fuck out of it (tuned for 24psi, went up to 32psi). I'm running an IAG 2.5 shortblock, what do you think I'm going to find when I finally get around to tearing it apart?
>>
>>28672290
Thanks! The blue 2017 forester has been great. At 92k miles now and have had zero issues thus far. Contrary to popular lore about CVT, oil consumption, and head gasket reliability issues, haven't encountered any.

The green 2025 Ascent has been awesome thus far in the first 1500 miles. Kids love the captain chairs and having independent rear HVAC controls. Only complaint are the stock tires are not spectacular, hoping they wear out fast so I can get some Michelins on it. Also some of the eyesite features are intrusive so shut off some of them.

I switched to an M3 tessie.
To be honest it beats everything on the road I come across, except for faster tessies, like the S Class.
>>
>>28671230
Fuck, okay, that's a pretty good looking car, not gonna lie.
You can get the wagons here with a 6 speed manual and a turbo engine for like 5 to 10 grand in relatively okay condition.
Give me some horror stories about them.

Nobody wants the poverty pack, modern autos are infinitely better.
>>

I've heard that the autos in newer subarus kinda suck shit
>>
>>28673621
It's not a modern auto though is it, retard?
>>28673618
IIRC the 6 speed is the strong one so it's got that going for it.

Honestly they seem pretty solid. If I had the cash spare I would do it, myself.

Are you in North America? I was specifically recommending the rare S402. If you're just looking for a regular Legacy GT I'd recommend getting the one with the best condition interior/exterior + service documentation and expect to need to rebuild the engine sooner or later (regardless of how many miles are on it).

>>28672361
How quickly did you get the car stopped and off? And what does driving like a retard actually mean?

>>28673618
It sounds like you're not in N. America? The 6sp is the transmission to get, it's stronger than the 5sp. If you're not in N. America, your turbo models are probably the 2.0L and not the 2.5L EJ255. I don't know much about the 2.0 turbos, other than them being more reliable than the 2.5L turbos. People commonly swap in the 2.0L turbo engine when their EJ255 blows.
>>
>>28673806
I noticed the temperature climbing and shut it down before getting into the red.

>what does driving like a retard actually mean?

Just driving way too fast on public back roads. No clutch dumps or mashing the throttle at low RPM.
>>
>Are you in North America?
No, I'm in Japan.
Another reason why I'm not getting excited about buying an older legacy is that the tax sharply increases for vehicles older than 13 years old.
>>
What's next will come in the mobility show. They are teasing a STI, but it could just be a CVT
>>
>>28673910
Oh ya, but even then that extra shaken is whatever given how cheap stuff is there. I had an FD RX-7 when I lived there 10 years ago and it was totally worth the extra 15% of whatever in tax.

Whether a Subaru is worth paying extra for us another story.
>>
>>28673910
Honestly its hard to recommend anything <15 years because anything remotely interesting sold there that's Japanese exclusive is <1.5-2mm yen floor (WRX STis with the EJ207, their price drops like 500k yen as soon as it hits 2009-2010)

I think your best option might be a Levorg, its nearly impossible to find a manual transmission WRX S4. Or one of the last turbo manual Foresters. Or just go German and buy a Audi S3 or Mk7 VW GTi.

>>
>>28674653
The Levorg is the right size for me, a Forest is too big.
If I were to choose a levorg, what should I expect? Is a 270 horsepower engine with a CVT a waste of potential?
Is the less expensive normal 1.8 turbo good enough?

What about the suspensions?

Pops has a 09 impreza with a stick, what all WRX and STi parts fit on?
Anything from other gens? Good place to read up on this?
>>
>>28677657
Mate had one of these, getting parts for it was a nightmare, couldn't source an AC compressor for the life of us.
It then started developing electrical issues that we tried to hunt down, followed by the tranny boiling itself and starting to slip.
I told him we could try and swap the clutches, but then the tranny literally exploded. The forward clutch pack basket cracked and sent its teeth through the transmission, cracked the casing and everything. Told him that now's perfect time for a manual swap, but he wasn't having any of it anymore.

I ended up pulling the manifold over the weekend to address a few things and tried replacing the turbo inlet. It could be installed on the manifold out of the car, but refused go back on the engine. After comparing them, Perrin's is retarded: Subaru intentionally molded the shape so it would have clearance around the TGVs: the aftermarket ones just ignore all that and expect you to just crush the tube through all the vacuum lines and hope you don't kink anything. It's also super fragile: would start ripping at even medium amounts of resistance. Huge waste of time and money as the OEM one was still mint after 18 years. Got the cylinder 4 mod on at least.

Damn, sorry to hear anon. TGV delete is a super common mod, perhaps that's why the Perrin essentially ignores their existence.
>>
How to boost leak test an ej20k? I may be fucking retarded but I don't know what lines all need to be plugged off
>>
>>28678925
Have you tried just doing a smoke test first? It's way easier and much more safe.

AFAIK boost leak testing means disconnecting the turbo inlet from the turbo, then plugging the turbo with something that can handle ~14 psi. Besides that, the crankcase will get pressurized from blow-by so the oil fill cap probably needs to come off.
>>
>>28678916
Maybe that's the case. I think when they start sticking, I'll think about deleting them but they seem benign for now. Funny enough one of the things I was addressing was that the seals between the TGV's and the manifold started leaking - not really something addressed by a delete kit without an entirely different manifold design.
