What does /o/ think of PPF (paint protective film)? Is it worth it? Good idea? I just bought a low mileage 2020 Corvette. Paint is in near perfect condition. My last car ended up with a ton of rock chips on the front. If this thing gets scratched or chipped I might cry. PPF seems like maybe a way to prevent that? But then again does it start peeling after a while? I wonder if when you have to remove it, it damages the original clearcoat. Anyone has used it before? Thoughts?
>>28643105Always worth it. Replacing it every couple of years is far easier than fixing paint.
If you have a special car that doesn't already have paint damage, it's definitely worth it
Yeah if your paint is in good condition at least get the full front done (bumper, hood, fenders) maybe A-pillars and mirrors along with the lower body in front of the rear tires if it kicks up rocks. Also make sure the shop wraps all edges, otherwise the seams / edges will begin to show over time. DO NOT cheap out and get “half hood” coverage as the seam ruins everything and the paint will fade differently.
idk i just lather linseed oil on my shit
>>28643118>>28643120>>28643124Damn when I bought this car they ceramic coated it at the dealer. I just read a bit about it and apparently you shouldn't put PPF on a car that has been ceramic coated. Wish I had known that before
NOOOO NOOOO!!!! STOP ALL OF THIS CORVETTE DISCUSSION PLEASE. THIS BOARD WAS SUPPOSE TO A SECRET PLACE TO REJOICE ABOUT JAPANESE PERFORMANCE CARS REEEEEEEEEEEEE-ACK
>>28643148>CorvetteI wanted to try the mid-rear engine config. This is probably the cheapest car you can get with mid-rear engine v8. It was a great value. I love it so much. The handling is different than the mid-front engine cars I've owned over the years. But I think the Jap car bros also use PPF so they're welcome ITT.
>>28643105I'm getting it on just my headlights, they're quoting 290 aud. Not sure if that's reasonable, they're fairly big lights.
>>28643105My Miata came with a PPF, it's nice to have the transmission and differential solidly bolted together
doesn't it also peel off the paint in the event you try to remove it?
I have a 2024 911. Opted against it since I'll have it long term and don't feel like bothering replacing it. I have like 3 or 4 rock chips on the hood that I filled with dr color chip. Doesn't bother me at all. It was 3500 track wrap and 8k full. Bought stocks instead.
>>28643141Nah to my knowledge ceramic coat probably wont affect it at all. You do want the paint corrected as much as possible though because once it's sealed under plastic there's no fixing it.Plus I'm 99% sure the dealership just slapped some spray "ceramic coat" on there and marked it up $1000 for "dealer prep" so I'm sure you'll be fine. Any decent shop will be prepared to address whatever comes in the door.
>>28643105PPF is mandatory if you really care about the car's paint.
>>28643180You're thinking of car wraps. PPF isn't known to do that.
>>28643186Yeah you live in Jew York and should have just traveled out of state to get full PPF. It was $5,400 cash to get a full PPF Xpel Fusion job in Oregon.
>>28643186>PorscheGood call on the rear engine config. But was itrock chips from driving on the freeway? Or track? 3-4 chips and it's only 2 years old, they add up over time. One of my other cars is cheweeeddd upp in the front (190k miles).>>28643204>>28643211Helpful, thank you>>28643170Why just the headlights? For me it's the factory paint. A headlight assembly replacement is usually much less costly and obvious than paint problems.
>>28643105I'm gonna say no.A $5-10K PPF job today, if invested, will be $20K by the time you need to pay for a repaint, and you can easily repaint the front bumper/hood (if it doesn't get hit in an accident by then anyway, which let's say there's a 25% chance of in 10 years of ownership).PPF will cause uneven aging of your paint so the areas under the PPF are a different shade when it's peeled off. It may risk damaging your underlying paint when they peel it off. It will likely only last 5-6 years anyway, even assuming they did a perfect application job without any edges/corners that peel up (a common occurrence).Like some other poster said, I also only PPF'd my headlights. I owned a car for 8 years and after a lot of outside parking the headlights got yellowed/hazy from minor rockchips and damage to the factory UV protection coating over the plastic. $20 headlight PPF off eBay (easy to apply) prevents that so I don't have to replace or polish/re-clear the headlights.Dr. Colorchip (not just regular touch-up paint from a pen, this brand or other ones that you fill in and level out with a mild paint thinner basically) makes rock chip touch-ups flush and nearly completely invisible. It's better to use this, since when you sell the car dealershits can't tell the difference anyway and will do everything possible to avoid giving you more for your pristine car anyway.
>>28643105>My last car ended up with a ton of rock chips on the frontwhy do blacks love following too closely? Arent your eyes focused further off in the distance especially with a low car like the Corvette?
>>28643299First off, I never tailgate. I could be in the left lane giving the guy in front of me like 2 seconds of distance while there are 200 cars all tailgating. Secondly, you can get rock chips being very far behind the last guy. I've gotten some of the worst ones being very far from semis. Randomly a big rock jumps up and cracks your paint or windshield.
>>28643301>2 seconds of distanceBro....
>>28643232Ppf costs more than repainting the bumper. The lights on the other hand cost tons to find in good condition plus even more to customize.
>>28643323>Ppf costs more than repainting the bumper.True >The lights on the other hand cost tons to find in good condition plus even more to customize.Headlight assemblies aren't really expensive nor risky like paint corrections are. When you mess around with the headlights it's just
>>28643105>PpfBetter known as helicopter tape
>>28643307Hey a lot of people on the interstate will be .1 seconds behind the next vehicle. I'm always giving people space. I have assholes tailgaiting me because I'm not tailgaiting the next guy.
>>28643335Maybe not for a brand new car. For anything actually cool its incredibly hard to find anything in good condition.
>>28643468Yep the parts are killer on older cars. I do love them though. And we must keep them alive.
When demand to be outraged outstrips supply:>>28643148
if you actually drive your car this kind of damage is normal and really just finetreatment depends on how serious you are about protecting the actual bodyworkproblem is you have a 2020 corvette and you probably don't really drive it muchso who cares
>>28643148this actually baited someone lmao
>>28643484>problem is you have a 2020 corvette and you probably don't really drive it much>so who caresIt's literally my daily. I don't drive my other cars at all now. When salt hits the roads though it'll be in the garage the whole time so you're partially right. You know this car has a decent trunk and also a frunk so it's perfect for a daily.
>>28643105Totally worth it, at the bare minimum most places will offer doing the front bumper to halfway up the hood and mirror caps. It’s well worth it for a car like your C8
>>28643862Yeah I was thinking about just doing the front of the car where the stones tend to chip. My other cars really didn't get much rock damage except in the very front of the hood and bumper.I'm going to call around on Monday to see if it's a bad idea to do this after ceramic coating. The dealer ceramic coated it after I bought it last month (supposedly).
