They thought that they could make infinite money with a market several times larger than Europe.Given that the Chinese have experienced a sustained economic downturn for five years and counting, gambling on appealing to the Chinese market has completely failed. They can't afford cars right now. Entering China has only lead to IP theft and meme-tier auto design with the sales to reflect that. They are stuck with this design until the next generation of cars.
