Never been around one, but I'd guess you yank the main lever all the way down to 1 and the when you are ready to shift to 2nd you grab the left most lever with the 2 on it and pull that. Next lever to shift to 3rd and so on. Keeps you from over shooting your intended gear so you don't skip one or accidentally put it in reverse or park.

it just replaces the standard electronic shift module with a mechanism that emulates the way a lenco tranny works, it's not a whole transmission, but it does allow for easier shifting on a car that might normally have an awkward column shift or floppity GM center console chicken leg
