I will fully disclose I make $100k a year and have a savings of $100k. Whether that’s a lot to you or chump change, am I wrong to spend more than $3000 on a car? Any more seems incredibly unwise.
>>

>make $100k/y
>only have $100k in savings
>Reddit OP pic with fake filename
Disappointingly low effort bait

gen 2 prius is an underrated shitmobile
>>
Depends on if you enjoy driving or just don’t care about living in an anemic miserable shitbox, most people don’t care and there’s nothing wrong with it
>>
You gotta be a serious wrencher to keep a $3k car on the road in tyool 2025.
Otherwise the shop will eat you alive so bad you'd wished you bought new
>>
>>28645532
What’s unbelievable about that?
If you save 1/3 of your income it would take 3 years to save up a year’s salary.
Granted that’s assuming 0 saving before you started making $100k, but OP also didn’t say anything about retirement accounts, which you would include for a car budget.
>>
if I was making $100k/yr, i wouldn't be buying some old unsafe shitbox that's going to waste my time with constant repairs and get me killed if im in an accident
>>
>>28645527
I used to be all about the shitbox life but not anymore. You want a nice 10k car.
>>
>>28645527
I make $14k a month a drive a $1500 car
>>
its only fine if you have free time to wrench and 2-3 backup shitboxes/public transit or bicycle to get you to work

if its your only car or you work a lot of overtime to make that $100,000 you're straight playing with fire
>>
>am I wrong to spend more than $3000 on a car?
depends. is the car necessary to maintain your income? if so, you want to make sure you get something that's gonna be reliable for a long time even if it costs more than $3K. I can't imagine you can get anything decent enough for $3K that won't soon require a few grand in maintenance
>>
>>28645873
>I can't imagine you can get anything decent enough for $3K that won't soon require a few grand in maintenance
It's because you've never looked
>>
>>28645875
I invite you to share your $3K finds. anything over 75K miles is a gamble. so is anything korean, FCA, or nissan
>>
>>28645845
How often do you get in accidents?

If you make 100K annually and you only have 100K in the bank then you only save {100K / years you've made it} per year. You are either a poorfag who recently stopped being a poorfag or are so terrible with money that shitboxes are all your credit will let you buy.
If it's the former then just buy whatever the fuck you want. When it dies, replace it with another cheap shitbox. Who gives a shit?
If it's the latter, you should just put a bullet in your mouth now. In spite of what you make you're going to spend your golden years working at McDonalds after you squander your retirement as early as humanly possible and your debts hit you.
>>
you should be walking
I make more than double what you make and i walk everywhere lol
wouldn't even consider a car until i hit $200k
>>
>>28645845
>old must mean rusty, it must be!
"safety" as a category rated on "cars" is a complete troll & fraud
it only exists as a marketing tactic for monkey brains >le taller and wider must mean le stronger!!
the only safety factor is the driver. end of story
>>28645983
>spend your golden years
>... after retirement
>>
>>28645979
pretty stupid questino. it only needs to happen once to potentially fuck up/end your life
>>
>>28646010
cars from the last 5 years are so safe that you can basically get t-boned at an intersection or head-on collision on the highway and walk out without a scratch
>>
>>28645527
this unironically but my car was $4500
can’t imagine spending the $50k on a new “good” car only to deal with bullshit like
>it’s hybwid uwu :3 wepwace the battewy every 5 years for $6k
>subscription
>shitty cheap touchscreen that will be dated in 2-3 years
And new “cheap” cars are crazy expensive and also dogshit. I test drove a new impreza, i had to hold the pedal on the floor to get it over 35mph, thing will probably last 75k miles if i’m lucky. stealer wanted fucking 25 thousand real us dollars for it
>well how much do you make per month? I’m sure you can afford this, only $xxx/month if you have OK credit
>that’s not relevant to this conversation, i could buy the car but it’s not worth what you’re asking
>well i dont want you to walk out of here without a car. I can understand if you don’t think it’s worth $25 thousand. How much would you be willing to pay for it?
>uh like $1,500
>…… i don’t think we can do that
Then they call me every day for the next 2 weeks to see if i found something and was big heap mad when i bought an ‘07 rav4 for $4k… its got 180k miles, probably has another 150k in it. The impreza brand new is only good for 100k tops…

The new car market is completely fucked by morons willing to take on infinite debt to own cars they cannot afford. My neighbor is a teacher and always bitching about how she’s underpaid, took out a loan for half her salary for a shitty mazda crossover lmao.
>>
>>28645527
no anything more than 3000 is insanity, spend 3000 on the car and not a penny more
then spend 55000 in mods

I think you can splurge a little more. 20k is fine. Hopefully you have 0 student loan debt.

t. spent almost 300k on 3 cars since 2021

I make $10M a year, have $100M in savings and drive a 130k mile Panther platform. Whatchyu gonna do?

10k car here is like a 12 year old Golf
>>
What are the rest of your obligated finances? Just find something $5k-$10k. $3k is beat to shit needs a new head gasket ONLY no low bawlers tier shit.
>>
>>28646238
>just needs a $50 part that i could install in 5 minutes by myself... but im not for some reason....

Just buy a $30k car and drive it till the wheels fall off. That’s what I plan to do and I’m in a similar situation as you.
>>
>>28646266
This, I'm 5 years into a forever Hyundai meanwhile average car payment has doubled since then. My unborn child will probably drive this car.
>>
>>28645527
>am I wrong to spend more than $3000 on a car?
Depends on how much money you have saved to purchase one. If you blow your wages with no money to your name, you can't afford any amount of car no matter how much you earn.

With that said, the Prius is an immensely based car.
>great for the extremely rich because it uses no money
>great for the extremely poor because it demands no money

>my wife is absolutely in love with her first gen sienna lolz, best 2800 that was ever spent imo
The only thing you can do to woo her aut/o/motively is to spring for an AWD Sienna of newer vintage, preferably newer than 2007 to get a timing chain.
>>
>>28646211
Car prices are absolutely stupid these days. CPO prices for old and/or high mileage cars. People are falling for this too, because they believe they have no choice.
>>
>>28645527
My father made six hundred grand last year and still drives a Dodge Caliber 2.0 to work. He bought it off a friends kid for four thousand bucks.

The older I get the more I just follow suit, it makes too much sense. I'm making pretty darn good money right now and I drive a 2006 CRV. Fun and getting where you need to go are more efficiently found in separate corners, and the CRV still makes me giggle when I make the tires chirp and sing around on ramps :)

Where i live you can barely find any good cars for $4k. Anything below that is old as shit (and not maintained well enough to be nice), has some hidden issues, or both
