My car (e46, autotragic) started making weird noises. Sometimes, after driving for a few hours, it can randomly start producing this sort of deep whine that worn truck axles make. It happens at speeds of like 25-30 kph, lasts for a few second but its really icky because you can literally feel metal grinding through the shift knob when it happens. I checked my driveshaft, center bearing and guibo and theyre all fine. One of my half shafts has a tiny but of play but nothing serious. What could cause this shit? I should also add that when shifitng between D and R you can hear a thud coming from the rear (this isnt new through, has been the case since when I bought the car)

Both were ubiquitous issues on E46 M3s when I was working on a lot of them a decade ago, not as common on non-Ms back then but I wouldn't be surprised if another 10 years of age has changed that. Not as sure about your deep grinding whine but it could maybe be wheel bearings, or it's just something binding up because of flex in the aforementioned bushings/subframe mounts.

Although, I do have to add that when cornering hard I can heart some sort of creaks from the rear. Might be something in the suspension but god I sure hope thats not my subframe mounts, cuz there is some light surface rust around them
