Used cop car just a money pit or a good investment?
>>
budget for a cam swap and top end rebuild or get a detective's car

a georgia policeman once told me that the chargers are very well liked performance wise but they just aren't very durable and the idle hours fuck the cams. on the other hand they are otherwise better taken care of than a crown vic because they spend more time in the shop.

wait where was part 1?
anyway yeah they're great. r*dditors like to cry about high idle hours but it's actually not that big a deal (exception to some big city dept's that put truly unholy amounts of idle hours on cars).
5.7 chargers are great. It's likely already had cams done already if they were an issue, and if they weren't an issue then they're unlikely to go bad. The who idle hours eating cams is a bit misinformed, Chrysler had a batch batch of lighters that affected virtually all cars & trucks with 5.7 engines (something like 2.5-5% of all engines were affected in total).

Bad idea. The days of buying a ex-police tricky vicky and driving it for another 10 years are long gone. By the time a modern police cruiser hits the auction block the thing is going to be all clapped the fuck out and not worth putting any money into. Any dodge is going to be fucked. The Fords are mostly all ecoboosts and will be all fucked up. Your best bet would maybe be a Tahoe but you're going to have all the AFM bullshit that you get with a modern GM but amplified by the abuse the vehicle has seen.

Late 80s/early 90s playboy style french mag Newlook had a puce about some small town us police pursuit car that looked like an f1/indy car and an f117 had a baby. It had a matt black slim, angular body, closed single seat cockpit, and massive external wheels. It also had a gun batrel protruding from the nose.

It's not impossible to find detective or unmarked cars with low idle hours if you really want a cop car. The 3.7 NA Ford engine in most cop cars is generally a good engine minus the water pump that tends to go out around 130k miles (due to high idle hours) Unfortunately where I live they don't release maintenance records for the car so unless its an unmolested car you're rolling the dice. The ecoboost 3.5 however is unreliable as fuck. For the 2020+ cars, I've read that the hybrid system is clunky and they no longer offer the 3.7 iirc.

Its a pretty rural area, roughly 600 square miles. Outside of the city there are lots of dead zones, even today. Back then it was impossible to get service on a computer in most places. I had a metal clipboard full of different types of reports (arrest, domestic, accident, etc). I kept a small notebook in my shirt pocket that I would write down names and addresses. I would write down whatever location dispatch gave me over the radio and if I wasn't familiar with it I kept a full size atlas in my duty bag in the back seat. When I got back to the station I would type everything from the written reports into the computer CAD system.

no clue. some podunk sheriff's department wouldn't have the money to commission a fancy bespoke interceptor, and they wouldn't be allowed to run vehicle-mounted weapons anyway. Closest I could possibly think of is the Camaros and Mustangs occasionally used by state troopers back then.

Mine was but that's me being an idiot first-time car buyer. Cost my $1100 up front I think, maybe $1400

> Thrashed trans that was stuck in first
> gas tank wouldn't hold more than a couple gallons before dumping it's contents
> No AC, accumulator rotted out and nobody would touch it with a 10 foot pole so I deleted it myself (got parts to install a brand new AC system)
> blower motor resistor + harness fucked
> no horn or cruise control working
> headlights fucked
> cracked header panel
> Alternator was junk, previous owner thought using copper shavings on the lug was a brilliant idea (it was not)
> Driver side exhaust manifold held in exclusively with 45lbs of SILICONE CAULK
> Cats fucked
> spark plugs fucked
> coils fucked
> fenders rotted out
> no rocker panels (frame still good tho so at least there's that)

And given it's my first car I'm hard pressed to just get rid of it. With the whole crypto thing going on with 401k's and the fact that I'm being asked to vote for a new chairman at the company managing mine, I'm tempted to just pull out everything, pay the tax and get a 4x4 vehicle so I can restore my vic.

Feels like crazy talk though so I'm going to stew on it. maybe hop over to /adv/

^This. Cop cars are left idling all day every day and many cops just use the accelerator as a switch to go from 0 to 80. Don't even get me started on what goes on in the back seat of the average cop car and the people who sit in them. The average police cruiser has a service life of just 2 years.

in the 1960s, in the wake of the civil rights movement, NYC decided to rebrand as a 'social services' department. Made their cars and police uniforms look more like EMS and changed their training to focus more on emotional support rather than zero tolerance for crime, to try and sell the image that they are Social Workers rather than Law Enforcement. of course, it made them look like pussies, and lead to 20 years of criminals having total lack of respect for the force and rampant crime in the city.
Giuliani switched them back to black uniforms and brought back their ability to crack skulls when necessary, which played a large part in restoring order in NYC in the 90s and early 00s.

Not really. They have an arbitrary mileage/age cutoff they sell after. Obviously stuff that gets totally trashed is sold off too but that will be obvious by the photos and maintenance notes & records.
