How to not get fucked when buying used from the local lot?
Is there an entire subset of society who aren't aware of private sales?
>>28648680They some how think used car dealers have standards to follow, which makes the markups "worth it" over the risk of getting scammed in a private sale. Doesn't help that the average facebook listing is written by complete mongoloids.
>>28648680Private sales are impossible to find these days, everyone just trades in so dealers are the ones selling all the used cars.
>>28648692I can open Facebook Marketplace right now and see 200 cars listed for private sale within 20 miles of me, with 5-10 new ones coming in each day
>>28648667The biggest thing is to not be afraid to just walk away. No matter what they say, it's bullshit.
>>286486671. Focus on OTD2. Complain about every line item3. Constantly mention that you're willing to shop around4. Don't be retardedAlso, you should only ever go to the dealership for the one car you're interested in and have done research on. If you don't know what you want and how much it's realistically worth then you're not a car enthusiast
>>28648689In my country they do because of lemon laws, my used car came with 5 year unlimited km warranty
>>28648667>ignore memefax unless the thing has been totaled (car is now worth less)>ignore odometer (you want a maintained car, not some 90,000 mile car you paid extra for that eventually needs everything)>inspect the actual fucking car you're about to spend thousands on
>>28648667You will get fucked, the only difference is how much (or little).
>>28648680I don’t really want to meet some rando from craigslist with twenty thousand dollars cash in my pocket, even if I bring a gun and a heavy.as much as a dealership might “rob” me, they won’t rob me.
>>28648667Take a very long test drive, don't just go around the block. 20-30 minutes should be enough for any gremlins to present themselves. In the UK (and the Rust Belt in the USA), get underneath and prod for rust along all the sills and frame. Surface rust is fine, scaly rust is also OK and can be used to negotiate the price down, rot is usually a 'walk away' kind of moment, unless you're handy with a welding set.If you're in the UK/EU, run the car's test history, check for any advisories (don't worry about fails, because they will usually have been fixed for it to get a test pass for sale). If you're buying from a dealer, ask for a warranty, most dealers (at least in the UK) have a company they use to provide this, even for old cars. This should give you 3-6 months of breathing room, so you know it's not a total lemon.Check when the clutch/water pump/wheel bearings/timing belt (don't bother if it's a chain, as the dealer will mug you off and say that they last the life of the car) were changed. If they haven't been done recently (and according to the service schedule) use this as negotiating room on the price.Negotiate hard, especially if you've found issues (big ones, not age related wear and tear) but don't take the piss. Dealers will often prefer to just wait for someone else if you're being a wanker. Final and best tip, don't be afraid to walk away, and make sure the dealer knows this. If they know you're desperate and you need this car today otherwise you ain't getting to work tomorrow, you've just thrown all your bargaining tools out the window.
>>28648667Never ever buy a salvage title or rusty car
>>28649040That's why you meet him at the bank. Sign the title inside the lobby, then both of you walk up to the teller and she transfers the money from your bank account to his. There's literally nothing to steal when you do it this way, unless he wants to rob the bank itself.
>>28648718this. i am lethargis as fuck, depressed, and have absolutely no cares for how my life turns out. i will walk straight out of the building if they dont play by my rules. you cant care less than i do its impossible
>>28649545This, also cashiers checks exist, you don't need to walk around with bands in your pants
>>28648689My used car came with a warranty. It actually had some transmission problems that forced them to partially rebuild it twice, probably at a cost of half of what I paid for the car. Sucks to be them I guess.
