Discuss some old school tricks that are learned in the street and in poverty or the south.
>For working in cars.
For example.
If you are certain that your transmission is slipping and you can somehow catch your gears a little , try pouring brake cleaner in your transmission and it will make a quick fix that will hold up for a while.

>brake cleaner swells up your seals preventing leaks and blow out in the transmission.
>>
you can use old motor oil to fertilize your lawn.

If anyone believes this , they must be euthanized
>>

>your transmission is slipping
Is this some cvt/automatic problem? I've never heard of it experienced this but I only drive manuals. A clutch slipping, sure but the transmission?

WalMart sells billions of gallons of new oil per year but doesn't reclaim any used?

>>28649779
Automatics have clutches in them just like a manual.
>>
>>28649793
Is in the old type of automatics not the cvt kind?

If you need to touch up an area but the only appropriate paint is spray paint but it's not feasible to spray it, just spray some of the paint onto scrap cardboard and while it's still wet, use a small paintbrush and brush it.

If you get a nail or screw in your tire, a properly inserted rope plug can be considered a permanent fix. The tire shop earns more money selling you a new tire, and the tire company will never know the extent of the damage so they don't want the liability of saying it's okay to plug tires.

Diesel fuel is a fantastic degreaser, just know you'll need to hit it with brake cleaner or carb cleaner afterwards.

Fluid film and other lanolin-based undercoatings are also rather good as a long-term lubricant for something like a hood latch or emergency brake.

You can get a rough estimate of some engines' compression by removing the valve cover oil fill cap while it's running and getting a feel for how much pressure is blowing into the crankcase.

Sometimes the delete kit is less expensive than the replacement part.

Dummy catalytic converters are called test pipes on ebay.

Certain parts are used across a wide variety of cars. You can often find things for a better price, or find something that you thought was out of stock everywhere simply by finding the part number and Googling that.

I know there's a lot more but that's all I can think of at the moment.

If you have rattly link kits cut off one side.
They'll never bother you again.
They're fucking pointless anyway.

test pipes dont nesecarily look like cats

Thats common as fuck. Nissan Armadas/Patrols & Infiniti QX80s all share a platform and are virtually identical vehicles, and the Nissan parts on parts.nissanusa.com are a few percent cheaper than the same one on parts.infinitiusa.com

Yeah I know but we were all noobs once.

use beta seal windshield adhesive to fix seats. Comes in a tube. Clean the seat smear the black goop on and let in set up completely

you can use plugwire boots on your conrod studs to keep them from guaging the crank.
>>
>>28649839
The old kind. They just have lots of little clutches instead of one big one and they shift faster and so don’t wear as much as a manual.

Huff gas to become one with car when wrenching
>>
this seems like it should be common sense but i've blown several minds when they tell me "bro ur turning it the wrong way"

when you're trying to thread a bolt in a spot you can't see, turn it counter clockwise slowly until you feel it click, now the threads are lined up and indexed properly to avoid cross-threading...
>>
>>28649872
What do you mean "link kits"?
>>
A mixture of bleach and ammonia makes a really great degreaser.

Brake parts cleaner is usually ineffective at getting grease out of bearings. Just press the new grease in to get the old grease out.

Scotch Brite and hot water are cheaper and sometimes more effective than brake cleaner

People will spend thousands on tires for cars they're about to scrap. The scrapyard is a great place to get new tires for $20/PC.

Tire bead sealer can be used in place of rtv where it won't be in contact with oil, or to glue gaskets on ($15/qt)

Live data is invaluable. A fuel pressure test kit is 2nd on diagnostic tools.

If it's not broken, don't fix it. Not only can you fuck it up, but defective new parts are now extremely common.

Most starters don't need replacing. Take the end cap off and clean/replace the brushes.

If you have an air compressor you can easily disassemble and rebuild your brake calipers, usually for less than $3

bought a 5 dollar jar of black nail polish, dries within minutes and you can build up a tough coat pretty quick. really great for quick painting over exposed metal from drilling holes etc.

50/50 atf/acetone mix is the only penetrant you'll ever need. the acetone thins it out so mix wherever needed.
a bit of old radiator hose cut to size can make an inpromptu tie rod end boot. cut it so that it gets compressed a bit to form a good seal.
>>
>>28651706
oh and nail polish top coat works great for protecting instrument panel buttons and other controls that get worn down with use
>>
Brittle old plastic connectors and clamps can be safely removed with a block of soft wood like balsa and some light hammering
>>
>>28651719
try spraying them with water, if they're nylon it'll absorb the water and soften up. takes at least a day or so though. but should make it a little bit less brittle
>>
>>28651688
No, you’re being silly!

That makes poisonous gas.

>I’m not joking
>>
>>28649872
>end links are useless
retard, may as well remove your now non functional sway bar,
>>
No one will fucking believe this but it is a real homemade recipe to make brake fluid.
>brown sugar adequate amount
>shampoo half a cup
>rubbing alcohol.
Mix it up to were you can smell that muccy smell and yes it will work as a replacement.
>>
>>28652155
Brother why. Brake fluid costs nothing
>>
>>28649966
Eh, if I ever put anything on them, it's just a piece of rubber hose.
Or just be careful with them.
>>
Starting fluid will clean out carburetors better then carb cleaner,
Ive done this on outboard engines and drained out pure gunk with in 2 or three sprays and of course letting it sit to do its job.
>>
goo gone is the best product i have found to remove tar/road tack from painted surfaces. it does a better job than automotive products supposedly designed for the purpose.

When diagnosing a roaring noise, say tires or a wheel bearing, you can drive over different road surfaces, say smooth concrete to rough asphalt, if the noise changes, it's probably tires.

Also, if you think it's a bearing, but you can't hear it when you have the wheels off the ground, put your hand on the strut or lower control arm, spin the wheel. You will feel which side is bad.

Pulling the spark on a cylinder can identify which rod bearing is bad.

When doing alignments, the machine setup is critical. Make sure the heads aren't loose. I've seen people fight an alignment, and I walk over and grab one of the heads and it almost falls off.

If you're doing an alignment on something that is way out of spec, re compensate after you get it close.

If a wire ohm's good, but still isn't working, load test it. See if it will light up a head light bulb.

I'm also very nosey, if I see someone fighting a problem, I'll try to help them, if I can't help them and they finally figure it out, I always go ask what fixed it

Windshield washer fluid that says (Danger, Flammable) on the bottle can be used as octane booster for 1/10th the price.

If youre in San Diego and want to buy AV Gas from Brown's field, the gate code is 1492.
>>
>>28651693
you can also use a grease press to disassemble your brake calipers if they're really stuck
just change one of the bleeding valves to a grease nipple
>>

>Also, if you think it's a bearing, but you can't hear it when you have the wheels off the ground, put your hand on the strut or lower control arm, spin the wheel. You will feel which side is bad.
very useful, thanks
>alignment heads
ive never seen how they do alignments, what's this?

any fluid can be flushed with a proper hose and a vacuum cleaner. No disassembly necessary. Use a big drum with two holes as a reservoir and you can use any vacuum cleaner even if not rated for water. tested for coolant flush. pretty sure it works on oil too.

Parts torn apart by rust can be riveted instead of welded back together. Its just as strong if not stronger.

Rusted holes can be filled in with expanding foam sanded and bondoed

That one is for detailing: cat/dog pissed/shat/vomited on your carpet? No problem. Dish soap or laudry soap+water on it. Dry with microfiber towel, wash it and twist it. Keep doing that until humid. If clean and smells nice, dry with paper towels or newspaper what the microfibre cant dry anymore.

Most small lawn equipment engines rarely need the carb pulled to be cleaned come spring time .Get it running on starter fluid or whatever and then choke it with a rag or your hand. The engine should pull enough vacuum to remove the varnish/dirt.
