Looking at buying a used car that'll last a few years with a budget of up to ~20k AUD (13k USD). From the sticky and sniffing around it seems like mazdas (e.g the mazda 3 from early-mid 2010s, still deciding between hatchback/sedan) are fairly reliable? Is that fair? I've looked at toyotas as well but they seem fairly overpriced in comparison (though I don't know if they're more long-lasting/that increase in price is worthwhile or just because of the name)
Also general buying secondhand thread I guess?

The Mazda 3 is pretty solid, and there are a lot of them around to pick from. Every used car will eventually have some problems, including Toyotas and Hondas. Having a mechanic look at it before you buy is a much better peace of mind than just relying on the brand name.

I have a 2010 with the 2.5L Duratec. That year has a defective ABS pump so not many are on the road since they won't pass inspection that way. I think later years fix that problem.

With that said, I'm on my way to 200k miles and I do not treat it kindly. I've destroyed a set of rims habitually jumping the car and accelerating my way through potholes, slid around on light trails and gravel for several tens of thousands of miles, overloaded it by nearly 2000lbs, and did tons of hooning in all four seasons. I am probably going to repaint the front bumper, hood, roof, and upper fenders and doors since that's where much of the paint has suffered damage.

Changes to car:
- 60A durometer spring rubber coils front axle
- 70A durometer spring rubber coil rear axle, planning to add another set
- 16" Sparco Terra rims w/ Falken Wildpeak Trail

That's what I'm planning to do. Thanks for the info.
