A big engine with FI will make even more power than smaller engine with FI. Displacement is just one of many factors in getting power out of the engine, all of which can be combined and don't exclude each other. So it is true that there is no replacement for displacement, because there is nothing that prevents adding more displacement, while being better in every way.
