Is Mazda as good a brand as people really say? Are the truly a contender with Toyota and Honda?

Remove the MX-5 and no, not in the slightest. That shitty CUV with the RWD chassis and I6 (that they didn't want to build a new Mazda6 with) doesn't count, and the modern Mazda3 offers nothing over the older model other than alleged "premium" looks while being cheapened in areas that it excelled in before such as performance and dynamics.
>but Mazda3 Turbo!
Auto only, you're forced to get all the luxury options and it costs as much as a WRX in the end. The one with a manual is the base spec one, and regardless of trim all of them come with a torsion bar suspension that you don't even get from a Civic or Corolla (multilink rear on every trim except base LE).
Bring back Mazdaspeed, unveil a new rotary-powered halo car and the brand might still be able to be salvaged.

Mazda quality varies drastically depending on the model. What model are you interested in OP? Please don't tell me it's an Rx8.

>they could be salvaged if they make two things that would make no money
I agree that the move to beam axles in the 3 and CX50 and no manual in the turbo 3 were retarded but the (comparatively) tiny company that barely breaks a million cars sold per year globally probably shouldn't go pissing money away on profitless ventures. If even the next Miata has to be a collaboration with Toyota then I don't think there's a whole lot of room for them to sell an even more expensive, lower volume RX car. Mazdaspeed is also unlikely to come back when their CEO has stated that it was childish and juvenile, and future Mazda performance models will be more mature. (likely under the newer Mazda Spirit Racing sub-brand).

From a fleet perspective: No. My fleet tried a couple models. It all looked good on paper. Result was inferior reliability. Average maintenance cost higher and end of life mileage lower. Now keep in mind a consumer isn't going to put that kind of miles on their car. I'm talking about ~50,000 miles per year, each.

Based CEO. The Mazdaspeed era was really rather terrible and would do nothing but hurt their push upmarket.
>>
>>28654460
Outside of the Miata not really. Toyota has GR86, GR Yaris, GR Corolla, GR Supra and an upcoming GR Miata/MR2 (Mazda collab), New gen GR Supra (Mazda collab allegedly) and Celica.
Also they provide some very nice regular use vehicles, are cheaper to maintain (if you ignore stealerships in the usa) and has a Luxury line called Lexus.

The new hybrids have something like a 50% failure rate. I've seen plenty on flatbeds. A vehicle manufacturer is pretty hopeless if they can't make a truck. Even Honda gave it a try but ultimately failed but at least they tried. Oh and don't even think about posting the """Mazda""" truck.

>upcoming GR Miata/MR2 (Mazda collab),
everyone has been saying it's a Miata/86 but I think you're right about the MR2.
In fact, I don't think this will share a platform with the Miata, they've been talking about bringing back the rotary in a hybrid after all.

They aren't gonna make the RX9 with a midrear layout

The new cx90 mogs the x5

They should make a new Premacy. Too many crossovers in their range.

From what I can tell owning one the past year, it's a dressed up Nissan. At least they're holding onto old norms like bigger engines and regular transmissions, but their programming is so bad I'd never buy one again. I would highly suggest renting one for a couple days to see if you like it, just a test drive alone may not reveal what a piece of shit it is. Inspect it closely and you'll notice all the low quality compromises. Try to adjust the settings and you'll see how retarded the engineers were. Dumb shit like not being able to adjust the seats while driving, car has to be in park. Seat belt chime continues while in park. Automatic braking slams on your brakes when a car slows in the lane next to you, and you can't turn it off. Headlights can't be turned off while the car is moving, etc. And they burn oil so not mechanically sound. Would never buy one again.

I've seen an anon say it's the new Honda. From what I can tell, if you don't want to spend the extra 3 - 4 thousand on a RAV4 with more miles, then a used CX-5 is a great replacement in my opinion.

>cx90
It's certainly better value for money, but it's a case where you're paying half the money for half the car. They still have long way to go before the gearbox and suspension issues are completely sorted.

I got a CX30 in the UK last year and so far I can say it's been great. One of the few brands in yurop that still offers proper engines (2L and up, no 1.2l turbo nonsense), interiors are nice, no touchscreen at all, everything is laid out logically on the inside, good bootspace for how small the car is. Also nice that you can turn off 90% of safety beeps, i only kept the blind spot alert and the reverse cross traffic things on since i find them useful. But compared to a lot of other cars I've driven there are pretty much no beeps or vibrations or whatever.

We'll see how long it lasts, but so far, happy with the purchase.

CX5 has been great, problem free, rides nicely. I know two people at work that had great experiences with Mazda 3s. I do think it depends on the model.

>half the car.
Lol dude the BMW engine is entirely made of plastic and the exterior looks like a black person with a big wide open nose
>>
>>28655834
Oh I should also mention - in the UK at least, all Mazdas have Japanese VINs. I know in the US some of em are made in Mejico, which may or may not have an impact on reliability

luv me cx-5
luv how easy its to wrench on compare to a passat.

people said Mazda would never go hybrid for the MX5 or RX7 revival and now they have hybrid MX5 patents and a hybrid RX7 inspired concept car.

I have a 2016 Mazda3 GT and I love it. 6 months since I bought it and no issues at 113k miles.
Gonna prob change the ATF fluid and do some touch ups to help make sure it will last to 250k like I want it to. But I'm hopeful it will so far.

>>28656756
change it ASAP because its "lifetime" of the gearbox oil

>Are the truly a contender with Toyota and Honda?
>killed off mazdaspeed
>I6 turbo limited to Karen SUV
>finally offer turbo+awd, no manual Hyundai tier at best
