I rebuilt my manual transmission. I guess that makes me better than you.
>>
>>28655108
First time, sonny?
>>
>>28655133
Yup. After seeing what a few of the reputable shops are charging. I said fuck it and did it myself. Shifting at 8000 rpm is a breeze now.
>>
>>28655140
I don’t get why it would be very expensive, except for gear replacement. You basically just stack gears in a tube, right?
>>
>>28655144
It's a relatively time consuming and precise job that requires semi-specialty tools
>>
>>28655108
As in replacing bearings and synchros and everything?
>>
>>28655144
There some spacing and tolerances that have to be correct and the tools are probably the hardest part if you’re not equipped properly. Service manual/pdf don’t have all the nuance and tricks that some of the transmission guys learn after some time. As far as price guy. It’s only cheap if you stay OEM. I went with Heavy duty and cryo treat gear set. Carbon synchros. Replaced all the little plastic bits with bronze. Shimmed the forks even though the manual said they were correct.

Gears had to be pressed with a 20 ton press. Bent a 10 ton rack before upgrading. Heavy duty snap ring pliers that nobody carries had to be acquired. Broke a couple of the regular duty pairs. Had to make my own puller tool because regular large puller tool not long enough or angled correctly. And that’s just to name a few.
>>
>>28655145
Exactly. Some tools had to be made. Some tools were insanely expensive.

>>28655151
Anything that could be upgraded got upgraded or modified. Heavy duty gear set. Cryo treated and polished. Carbon lined synchros instead of the OEM metal on metal style. Saved several thousand dollars doing it all myself.
>>
>>28655108
It does.
>>
>>28655157
Sounds like you went a bit overboard, my next question was going to be asking about what tools you had to buy for pulling and pressing the gears off and on, but I'm not sure if I want to know now.
>>
>>28655181
I built it to handle abuse. Trying to run 10 seconds consistently so I need it to be a little better than stock. Broke 2nd and 3rd in two different stock units so it made sense to throw everything in it.

I had to weld up a puller to get the case open, and weld up a shim to fit the press. Some stuff I didn’t even use a press. I actually put the reverse sleeve in the oven and it fell into place effortlessly and was tight as fuck when cooled down. It was perfect
>>
>>28655184
Yeah I just read your post up here >>28655154 and it was about what I was expecting.
5th gear is notoriously hard to get off my gearbox and it's the main thing stopping me from having a go at one of my spares.
I've been thinking up custom tools in my head, or the other option is just to cut it off and buy a new one.
>>
>>28655192
> 5th gear is notoriously hard to get off my gearbox
put gearbox in freezer, remove, profit?
>>
>>28655108
Now rebuild an automatic.
>>
>>28655195
that only works if you have a temperature differential between the two components pressed together.
If I could freeze just the output shaft, or heat up just the 5th gear, it could come off easier - but heating or cooling them both together won't help.
>>
>>28655108
while not a rebuild I've got to reseal the gearbox on my tractor, maybe the pto clutch needs a rebuild (new pack).
>>
>>28655192
Yup. When pulling one gear off, since it was getting replaced, I didn’t hesitate to grind notches into the teeth so the plates on the press would fit nicely.
>>
>>28655204
I knew a guy in college who rebuilt his bmw 5something automatic tranny with his dad. Everyone in computer science was autistic.
>>
>>28655204
I plan on building a 4l60e with everything that PerformaBuilt uses in their builds. Also gonna do a heavy duty transfer case. Dropping in a gen 3 6.0 when I can get my hands on a part out. Not decided on doing a turbo yet but it’ll be interesting to see how a built 4l60 holds up. Lot of guys don’t even wanna build them.
>>
tldr: op can make a sandwich
>>
>>28655253
>it’ll be interesting to see how a built 4l60 holds up. Lot of guys don’t even wanna build them.
IIRC there was a factory-beefed up version of 4L60E called 4L65E or 4L70E that usually came with 6.0s
>>
>>28655256
Correct. They came in the AWD platforms mostly I think. Few upgraded differences but a lot of the same failure points. Same drum design that likes to crack in the same place. Same bands and clutches that burn up under abuse.
>>
>>28655263
>a lot of the same failure points. Same drum design that likes to crack in the same place. Same bands and clutches that burn up under abuse.
Good to know, thanks. And good luck with your project.

>>
>>28655108
ive yet to do one so yeah you do have more skill than me. im planning on getting a lsd so eventually ill have to split the case and pull the gears out
>>
>>28655184
why not just go for a straight cut or sequential box? serious question. was it the cost or?
>>
>>28655372
Can’t do it if those parts made for this gear box.
>>
i'm so sick of manual where i live, it's such a pain in the ass driving around with all of the traffic and lights

KEK i only know of that because i watched gearboxvideo's w58 rebuild video and he went into why there were was an aftermarket for the 5th gear set
>>
>>28655372
A sequential box? What kind? That’s insanely expensive. And there’s no straight cut or dog box parts for the mt82
>>
>>28655108
Congratulations on accomplishing the simple.

depends on the gear case.
older transmissions that were designed in the late 70s early 80s were often fucking 4 speeds and they just MPREGGED the tail housing to cram a 5th in there.
>>
>>28655140
Good job. That's the only way to learn new things. Keep going, even if you fuck it up once in a while.
>>
>>28655204
I rebuilt a ford c4 a long ass time ago, it wasn't fragged but the surface of the pump was scored so that it was slipping badly, while I was in it I put a clutch pack in it.
got tired of automatics and got a 4 speed, sold the c4 to some crazy fucking lunitic who wanted to cut the cast in bellhousing off and bolt it to a rotary engine drag car.
>>
>>28655989
you must be like a giant bitch my car has an 11" clutch from a f250 and a cable and i just dont give a damn
>>
>>28655981
>>28656218
I see. I didnt even bother to look up the model. Mostly just curiosity. Im aware of the extremely high cost. The straight cut box for my car is something like over $10,000 and for the sequentials they wont even list the price,it just says contact us so you know its crazy expensive.
>>
>decide to manual my old furd trugg
>3 Oem options but they all suck, too weak and shitty (m5od) or massive and expensive (zf5/6)
>Guess imma custom this bitch
>Looking for tr6060s
>Ford ones that would make it fairly easy?
>Haha don't exist because Ford is a cheap fuck that only used them in the most expensive special limited edition mustangs, and bargain bin garbage elsewhere
>Gm/dodge ones?
>A mere 3500-5000 depending on how many syncros the owner raped
>Happen across a tr6070 (Corvette 7 speed) for an excellent price
>Fuck it it's literally 1/4 the price of the the cheapest 6 speed
>Get it and strip it down
>Send main shaft to be shortened and have splines replaced (because literally not 1 single Ford or gm transfer case made after the 90s is 30 spine, fuck you gm)
>Get it back and start reassembling
>Half way done, putting on i think 5th gear
>Doesn't fit over the new splines
>No... Nooo nooo nooo fucking way
>Ffffffffffffffuuuuuuuuuuuuuucccccccccckkkkkkkkkk
>Check all of the remaining parts
>Literally everything else slides over fine, just that 1 gear
>Put it on the bench and walk away
>Haven't touched it in 6 months
I'm pretty sure I can grind off 1-3 splines off the shaft to get it to fit but I just haven't been able to drum up the motivation to try
>>

can't tkx it?

Considered a t56 magnum and tko/tkx but too spensive new and too much of a ptia/extra cost/probably impossible to make it able to accept a tcase, which is why a Corvette tranny or other t56/tr6060 trans that can take a Corvette tail housing is the obvious choice for enabling making a simple adapter.
>Pic rel
I also considered divorced but that would involve a new tcase, custom mounts and driveshafts, and the whole thing just being unacceptably long (supercab short bed, every inch counts to maintain acceptable transmission and pinion angles without even more shenanigans like center bearings)

>>28657029
It's rated for 450hp (that is known to survive 600-700hp just fine) going to an engine that makes """300""", at redline, on a good day, 20 years ago. The only issue might be the literal ton weight disparity, but the ls3 makes like 120 more hp and torque and is far more violent (stock mod motors are very peaky) and I'm not going to be racing and doing burnouts every day of the week, so it should all balance out I think. plus like 98% of modern era truck owners I barely tow or haul shit anyway so that's not a concern.
>>
>>28656992
tremec makes a tr4050, it's about as expensive as a tkx but I THINK it has a granny low, it looks like a np435 but with overdrive and an aluminum case.
