Stupid questions that don't deserve their own thread What's the best way to remove heavy calcification inside a radiator? I let it sit for 24 hours with vinegar and poured it out today, it was white as milk but there's still a noticeable amount inside. Just redo the vinegar soak several times?
>>28663170You scrap it and buy a new one for $90 on rockauto.
>>28663173Why when my current radiator is fine minus the calcium?
>>28663170undiluted vinegar soak with agitation
>>28663186And my current engine is fine minus the cracked block
>>28663190these aren't similar problems in the slightest. there's no physical damage, it's just a buildup. It would be like swapping out your engine because your old one had carbon buildup.
>>28663188>>28663170try CLR
>>28663190Wrenchlet dumbass.
Did you use actual vinegar, or the ~5% vinegar/95% water child-safe scam vinegar sold at grocery stores?
>>28663221I used the $3 gallon of vinegar sold at Walmart
>>28663221Say goodbye to the metal.
>>28663231Then you actually just used water>>28663243Yeah, I don't recommend using this without dilution, 25% vinegar/water should do fine, which is 400% stronger than scam vinegar.
>>28663250I've never had a problem with Walmart vinegar to dissolve rust, and I've put some very rust shit in it Vinegar elitism isn't something I expected to find on here
>>28663221Wow. Vinegar so strong it comes with a fucking MSDS sheet.
>>28663170keep the vinegar hot with a water heater element and pump it through the radiator bottom to top with some sort of a pump.
>>28663170I would just redo it 2-4 times then follow it with some dish detergent then water rinse. Personally I would not leave vinegar in there for more than a day. 15min of driving with the motor hot always worked good for me.>>28663257he's just being a faggot
>>28663304>keep the vinegar hot with a water heater element and pump it through the radiator bottom to top with some sort of a pump.I would just buy a new radiator before doing that.
>>28663325>Personally I would not leave vinegar in there for more than a day.I've left metal in vinegar for weeks with no ill effect. it's a very mild acid at 5% strength.
>>28663364which metal? I've tried to remove stuck piston rings and within a week the ring and the aluminum had significant corrosion, had to get used pistons and jugs. anyway vinegar is bad for the rubber bits and seals, it makes it soft then brittle over time
>>28663170>What's the best way to remove heavy calcification inside a radiator?Borax, 100% Lemon Juice mixture with distilled water.
>>28663170if your radiator has so much buildup then the block does too, throw that shit back on and use vinegar as coolant for a week then flush it out.
>>28663288>>28663243This.Vinegar is the go-to product for stripping rust on vintage BMX components. You can literally melt steel (beams) with it into a pile of goo if you let it sit too long. And im talking about the diluted white cooking vinegar like anon got from Walmart. Did nobody have a chemistry teacher in high school who started the semester with a dozen jars of various acids from vinegar to soda to citrus to battery acid and see how long it takes to dissolve an iron nail in it (?)
I need non-shill wiper blade recommendations, I bought a cheap set from super cheap and the blades ripped in like 2 months, so it turns out that wasn't a great choice
>>28663288Every household chemical has an MSDS as mandated by OSHA
>>28663600find out what brand/supplier your car came with from the factory and use those
>>28663611Have we not made advances in wiper tech in the last 30 years? I guess it is just a strip of rubber
>>28663614tires are "just" rubber too, but it's a lot easier to develop rubber that slides over glass without hopping, tearing, or cracking from temperature changes than it is to develop a tire. the materials science has basically been solved for the blade rubber itself; it's just a matter of how cheap the materials are
>>28663288every chemical has an MSDS sheet as required by law. even water does iirc
>>28663600oh man i remember when they had their silicone blades. they were fantastic when they worked, but they only lasted a year lol. premium ones like PIAA last like 5 years but very expensive to get here, if you can even get them at all.Anyway, try the oem toyota blades, you can get the part number for just the refills instead of the entire assembly which will be a lot cheaper. They're pretty damn good, also graphite coated so they'll glide right over the glass
>>28663591>You can literally melt steel (beams) with it into a pile of goo if you let it sit too long. And im talking about the diluted white cooking vinegar like anon got from Walmart.maybe if you leave it for like 700 years
Are these any faster/better than using channel locks?
>>28663605>Every household chemical has an MSDS as mandated by OSHAThey havent been called MSDS in a long time, they're now SDS, and they're only required by OSHA for workplaces. The exact opposite of "household" chemical
>>28663600PIAA silicone blades are nice, the ones with the metal frames have replacable blades
>>28663170Flush it with washing machine cleaner, calgon, or pure sodium citrate (same active ingredient in all of it).
>>28663354>I would just buy a new radiator before doing that. You do realize some radiators are hard to come by and super expensive right?
>>28663221That's what's used to convert morphine into heroin. It's heavily watched.

>>28663802>That's what's used to convert morphine into heroin. It's heavily watched.unlikely, you can concentrate vinegar with fractional freezing.
>>28663702these are not better than channellocks, IMO piston expanders are only really useful on dual piston calipers (as in one on both sides of the caliper). so if you do buy one get one that expands in both directions.
>>28663718OK poindexter, it's still mandated by law whether or not they're used in the workplace. Dish soap, toothpaste and even water have an (M)SDS.
>>28663848I was gonna use it at work, so it would be on single and double.
>>28663646>didn't take high school chemistry. Here's a hint:There were no nails left at the end of the semester.
>take oil pan off 350 vortec to replace leaking gasket>previous owner was one of those dumbasses who uses RTV on top of the gasket so I had to scrape that mess off>it leaks anyways hence me having to replace it, what a moron>normally 14 bolts hold pan on except mine has 10 bolts and 4 studs with nuts>some other parts took forever to come in so I lost track of where the studs go>apparently I have the only engine in the world with some studs on the oil pan because no amount of searching can tell me where the studs are supposed to go or if it mattersI know one stud holds the transmission cooler bracket in place, that's easy. But the other three, I guess I'll just put them where the crossmember runs under the pan? That's the only place I can find that looks different or "special" where the studs could go instead of bolts.Do I have in fact have a 1 of 1 motor where this is the case or does anyone know where I should put the studs?
>>28663907>it's still mandated by law whether or not they're used in the workplaceagain they're not you retard. you dont even know what they're called, MSDSes were retired by OSHA in 2012. and you still dont seem to know what the O in OSHA stands for
>>28663977I misspoke but my point stands, just about every chemical used around the house has one even if the whole scheme is intended for occupational use.
Over here we have very mild winters, not even -10°C, the snow sometimes even decline the invitation. And yet every year you have normies switching into their "winter tyres". Good for the tyre guys I guess, they also need to be fed.But what I did was just install new 'all season' tyres and then never bothered. I've had no issue with it.What are the cons of this?
>>28663928You're not dissolving a nail with walmart vinegar in any short period of time you dimb faggot. Those tools sat in vinegar for a year and a half and are mostly unchanged.
>>28664087Who knows, 'all season' is a phrase used to refer to a whole lot of different tyres, some that are good, lots that are absolute shit, and everything in between. There's a specific tyre that exists that has certain specific properties, and it's the one you picked, but who knows what to say about it if you don't mention it either.A bit precious to be asking for validation after you've already made the decision to begin with at any rate.
>>28664136>mostly unchanged
>>28664136>ill take "whats the difference of chromium vs steel" for $200, Alex.Fucking moron.
>>28664164cherry picking a single tool in the bunch is beyond idiotic. these also weren't good condition tools when they went in, what you're missing from that wrench was mainly from a substantial amount of rust, not the vinegar. >>28664166yeah? chrome files? chrome impact sockets? fucking dumbasssome of the steel was eaten away, but not a significant portion, especially not enough that>You can literally melt steel (beams) with it into a pile of gooin anything short of centuries.that's also not even how jeopardy works. you're just retarded through and through.
>BRO 5% VINEGAR WILL MELT STEEL BEAMS!disregard that it didn't do jack shit to a spring that's probably not even 1/16" thick and every single tool still has perfectly legible wording after 19 monthsI guess that was just a chrome spring though, right?
>>28664160>A bit precious to be asking for validation after you've already made the decision to begin with at any rate.Well the thing is, I'm about to buy new tyres again, I have no idea what to look out for. I was intending to once again request "all season" tyres, hence this stupid question. I had no complains about my current tyres but then again, no idea what to look out for. All I know is I know want to have to bother chaning tyres for "winter".
Brehs, I want a nice headunit, that I can buy off the shelf. I want it to do wireless android auto and wireless car play. I want to use it for maps, music and rear camera, I want it to have possibly the latest bluetooth etc. There are too many in the market and it is confusing. Snoy, Pioneer, Blaupunkt, JXL? I don't want laggy shit. What should I look at? Can I go Honda / Suzuki OEM stuff from newer cars?
>>28663804>you might be able to get it recored if it's some obscure or unobtainium radiatorThose places are few and far between anymore. Sad state of affairs when Pakistani shitskins have better options than we do here in the US.
I replaced the steering rack on my F11 5 series with a used one which has an identical part number, however both E-Sys and ISTA fail to communicate with the power steering motor that's on the replacement rack. Is it safe to assume the motor is dead?
>>28663170Im going to take a guess here and assume you arent talking about one of these modern aluminum with plastic end tanks radiators.Draino flakes and boiling water flush.I have a bunch of brass oem radiators in otherwise good shape that i havent got to but thats what ima be doing with them to decalcify them. Its a process but it works.
>>28664087You were lucky then, the ones my car's previous owner put on there were dangerously bad in the wet and utterly unusable in snow. I've literally had bald 12yo tires that needed a daily 1bar refill before and even those had better grip in the wet. After damn near crashing twice at low speed I dumped them and got some good tires. Never had a problem again.Allseasons are always a compromise between durability & fuel consumption in summer and grip in winter. Some are functionally winter tires and will thus work with mild enough winter conditions, though they'll have downsides on hot summer days, especially in terms of wear. Some will be like mine and have a tiny rolling resistance and very little wear all summer, but come a single snowflake the 1% gradient on your driveway is an insurmountable obstacle.I'm sure theres manufacturers that do a decent job with them, but definitely look up some tests to find out which ones are decent so you don't end up with a pice of shit.If you compare a good season-appropriate tire with a good all-season, the winter / summer tire will win for sure. But it's true that not having to deal with switching is nice too.
>>28664229Oem tech is absolute shit. Most places that sell those kinds of things have walls covered in head units, just go there and try them out. They're all the same.
I love sedans but I’m 6’5” and every new sedan I’ve sat in is made for midgets. To make matters worse, I’m an engineer at an industrial plant and new cars are so low to the ground that I feel they would get destroyed by the rough roads and railroad crossings around here. I don’t really want a truck or an SUV but I feel like my hand is being forced. What’s a decently fast, reliable vehicle that a big fella like myself can comfortably drive? Currently looking at a used Lexus GX460 or possibly BWM X5. My last resort would to just get a trugg and call it a day.

>>28664218Yep.Youre fucking retarded.Notice how chromium doesnt rust but steel does (and very quickly) ?Chromium is resistant to chemical decomposition. hey guys, my fiance finally bought her own car. we found a retired vet selling his 74k mile 2014 Toyota Camry for $8k. Apparently this dude had his 3rd DUI. He wastes his savings by going to his local towny bar everyday, gets plastered, and then drives home drunk + being nearly 80 he cant drive at all, so his wife made him sell his car for cheap.this car has been dealer serviced recently, $2300 for new brakes and tires. there are a few small issues. besides never been cleaned, the touchscreen LCD isnt working, I found a fix for it but im wondering what else can I do to improve it. this is the first modern toyota ive deal with.it has no GPS, is there a GPS version of the entertainment system available that I can fit in there? I dont specifically need it for GPS functions, its just nice to have a map on display, and maybe a better quality head unit.2nd, im looking for remote start. my gf is really bad about getting the car started early, and she drives right off before letting it warm up at all. this irks me.the rest of it is in great shape, dealer did all fluids, transmission recall, and 60k service. so yeah, OEM headunit upgrade, and remote start, OEM if available.
>>28664923would this work as a plug in? it has dual climate, will those functions work by switching the head unit only or does it need a specific hvac unit as well?there are also a bunch of ~$130 android tablet for sale as well, are any of them good?
>>28664923>2nd, im looking for remote start. my gf is really bad about getting the car started early, and she drives right off before letting it warm up at all. This isn't really an issue. Your car is not a diesel. You'd only need to wait a few seconds for oil to circulate once in a petrol car. Just be light on the throttle, drive conservatively for a few minutes and you are good to go.
>>28664959sure but its cold up here and warming it up before driving is nice. she already drives conservatively so its a non issue. but it would be a nice present for her
>>28664966Aftermarket remote starters are janky as fuck. I had an old golf that had one installed by a previous owner, it would kill the engine and throw a CEL every time you opened the door with it running, and I never even got the remote to actually use the damn thing.
>>28664972im asking for an OEM one not aftermarket.
>>28664947probably not, if you dont have all the other hardware for dual climate zones and the ability to program the ECU that you have this functionality it will do fuck all. Same with navigation.
>>28664556I liked the interface for pioneer more so that's what I went with.
>>28664923You literally should start the car and drive it gently right off the bat. All idling it and waiting for it to "heat up" is doing is increasing the amount of time the car is spending in a low temp, high wear state.
>>28664850adding on more insults doesn't make your argument more solid.everything that was in the vinegar was thoroughly rusted to start with.. If vinegar was the reason for the spring's deterioration, it would be seen throughout the whole spring, not on only one end of it. And again, that is a tiny, tiny spring. Your argument was that grocery store vinegar will turn a steel beam into goo, but in over 1 1/2 years it barely did anything to an extremely tiny spring. so let's recap:>5% vinegar will dissolve metal!! metal sitting in it for 19 months was barely affected. Unless you plan to live into your 1000s, you're not going to see 5% vinegar from walmart do anything of note to a steel beam. >it didn't do shit to those tools because chromium!files are typically carbon steel>coke will completely dissolve a steel nail in under a week!!an old shit nail in coke had literally no change in 4 days all of your scientific claims are based on boomer myths that are just a bad game of telephone from retards telling retards telling retards what they heard another retard tell them.Google is free and you have internet access, why do you bother arguing claims that are easily debunked in half a second of research?
>>28663170I need an ID on the broken hose in the pic.It should be one of these, but I'm not sure which one:13411435781 (number 10 on this diagram: https://www.realoem.com/bmw/en/showparts?id=CB51-EUR-12-1996-E36-BMW-320i&diagId=13_1710 )11151703714 (number 8 on this diagram: https://www.realoem.com/bmw/en/showparts?id=CB51-EUR-12-1996-E36-BMW-320i&diagId=13_1712 )13541740159 (number 12 on the diagram right above)I feel like it's the first one (number 10), but I'd like a second opinion. I'm going to try my best to describe this. I have a car with a manual transmission. It's a 2020 miata if that helps. If I am in first gear, accelerate a little, then take my foot off the gas and immediately put it in neutral, it seems as if the engine continues to rev a little for a second or two. As in, nothing is connecting the engine to the wheels, my foot is off the gas peddle, but the revs stay elevated for a second. I also hear a faint high-pitched whine when this happens. Conversely, if I take my foot off the gas, but keep it in 1st for a couple seconds and let the revs naturally drop a little before putting it in neutral, the revs drop right away as expected and there is no whine. This car does not have automatic rev matching or anything like that as far as I know. What could this be?

>>28667496UK, heard of it, never seen it enforced.
>>28667589the C type spring, and constant tension clamps are great because they always apply consistent pressure all around the hose no matter the temperature. worm clamps are often overtightened to the point that the hose rubber is basically squeezing through the holes like a meat mincer, and when the rubber expands and contracts they don't accommodate that so you get leaks.
>>28667905So should I not change to worm drive hose clamps?
>>28667967NTA anon, but if your clamp is a constant tension type (i.e. it can't be adjusted, it just is the size it is) then you shouldn't replace it, as they're used in applications where the clamp needs to expand and contract with whatever it is clamped to, which worm drive clamps do not allow. If you're replacing an adjustable (screw) hose clamp, then you should be fine to just use whatever. If the double wire clamps on your car are the same as the double wire clamps that appear on your list, then you'll be fine to replace them with a worm. If they don't have that bolt/screw show in the picture and are just a double wire variant of the C spring clamp, then no, do not use worm drive clamps.
