Weekend Wrenching General is Live! The garage is open and the tools are out. Post what you're working on, from quick fixes to major overhauls. Let's turn some wrenches!
>>
hey man can i borrow a 10mm socket
>>
cont. from the last thread
I have now found a decent place to jack my car on the subframe (on the lower control arm), and no longer will I use rubber pucks to jack up my car.

anyone used a set like this? I see a gorillion bullshit chinese brands selling this exact set for like $30, and I'm thinking, at that price its GOT to be trash, but figured I might ask on the rare chance its a gem
>>
>>28665449
Ive never needed and of these in 13 years of wrenching. Go get a nice set of snap ring pliers if you have money to blow
>>
>>28665774
I've got a nice set of snap ring pliers, I'm just tired to bastard death of trying to remove hose clamps of every shape and size with slip joint pliers, ESPECIALLY THESE FUCKERS. I keep finding them in places i cannot position the jaws perpendicular and trying to remove them parallel to the jaws is maddening
>>
>>28665941
I got a bunch of channellocks from an estate sale and that's what I use on those factory bastard style clamps. I've never needed those goofy looking clamp pliers

I've got some play in my steering, thought it was the tie rods, but turns out it's the rack itself.
Flick through the Toyota service manual to work out how to remove it. All seems straight forward. Get to point 9. FML.
Thanks, Toyota-san. Very cool. Nice 'car'.

See if you can undo the engine mounts and raise it up enough to clearance the steering assembly.

it does look like it's just the rear lower engine mount in the way, but pretty tight.

Soft top hydraulics again. One leaky cylinder gets replaced - the next one starts to leak.
>>28665449
Yes, but not the entire set. Clamp pliers are useful when doing the hoses, especially the remote one. They are trashy but for occasional usage it's perfectly okay.

>I got a bunch of channellocks
They can work (I previously did spring-type OEM clamps with pump pliers), but the process feels really shitty: you need a lot of space around the clamp, they slip from it all the time and they eventually damage it. Specialized pliers from Chinesium proved themselves to be way faster and more convenient, especially in hard to reach spots.

Meant that the red parts take a lot of space which isn't really necessary, and they will interfere with stuff if everything is tightly-packed (like a normal cobra-style pump pliers did in my case), and they have a selection of Cobras of different sizes. Could've also made them thinner and just along the green lines. Also having a big handle on the side isn't really helpful: a lot of times you can access the clamp along the hose it is clamping but that's it, there's no space on the side.
Not trying to shit on the tool (Knipex makes great tools) even if this might sound like it, but I mean if it's spacious enough around the clamp in most cases you won't even need a special tool.
t.suffers from owning a transverse European turbo
>>
>>28667191
if access is that limited then you're kind of stuck using those remote action hose clamp pliers
>>
>>28667256
Those sadly don't grip as good as direct action ones and they still need space on one side. But sometimes they are the only ones that can get to the clamp.
So, to conclude, at least half of the >>28665449 set is kind of useful, especially if the engineers were retards or everything is packed really tight.
>>
I wasn't aware, but some of the flopped craftsman v series products were also branded and sold under the dewalt line. The pseudo-RBRT hex bit sockets are on sale, the sae set is $14 and the metric set is $38. Actually not too bad if you work on shit with a lot of recess hex.

how would you test wheel/fender clearance? Preferably without actually removing the coilover. I was thinking jack the car up on one side, put 2 jack stands to hold it there. Attach the new wheel, then use the jack to push the wheel up to maximum compression like pic related (angle is exaggerated but you get the idea).

That coilover will essentially have the weight of the whole car on so even at max compression i don't think it will raise the car more but i dunno it sound sketchy as fuck i don't want to fucking flip the thing

i know that feeling all too well. i beat it by just chipping away at it. even if it just meant one (1) nut was removed for the entire day. the side effect of doing that was that while i was at it, i'd end up just getting carried away, removing more shit than i planned to. before i knew it, i had the stuff out that i wanted to reconditioned, and now it's almost all back together.

I'm currently undecided on what I'm going to do power plant wise. I have a spare competition 71b transmission but over all I don't know if I'm going to keep it this way. Right now it's tired. It has 300k, it has low compression on 3/4.

It needs some bodywork and paint. I've been toying with three stupid engine options : vg20et + 71c, q25de + cd009, or looking at trying to RWD adapt an sr16ve. These all put you at about 190hp nearly the same as the top of the line s12 but with more available parts.

Unrelated but I had some weird issues related to the old failed PCV on my barge, had to redo the VC and plug gaskets again.

I need to change front struts on my car. watched videos and it seems not too difficult since I'm replacing the whole part and not fixing it parts by parts. Any bullshit I should know about that might have been missed in videos?
>>
>>28679510
This really depends on car. Generally speaking I tend to do ball joints, outer tierods and other suspension joints at the same time I do struts anyway. Some cars the uncompressed strut may actually be longer than the space available when on the car, and you need to partially compress the spring in order to fully remove the assembly.

those are not engine choices that i would have considered. sr20det is the obvious choice. rbs will also fit in the s-12's long hood space. i think japan and australia got the rare option for fjs as well which would be the neatest option of all.
>>
>>28679749
VG30E is a stock S12 motor, meaning there is already a cross member and OE engine mounts to support the VG20ET. The cross over exhaust arrangement means that VG (e and Et) /VQ turbo motors will sit in nicely to align their downpipe with the existing exhaust channel. I also am fairly fond of the Single cam VG motors...people shit on them all the time but every one I have had was a reliable tank for hundreds of thousands of miles.

SR16 VE just sounds like a hoot having 185HP at 8700RPM or something silly in the N1 versions

I dislike the sound of the big block SR's, and putting in a iron pig of an RB seems like it would mess up the handling, more than the S12 already is.

Drove an FJ20E RSX coupe a few years ago, which was fun, but I am not about to drop 10k on a 45 year old engine with basically no OE support anymore.
>>
>>28679774
>VG30E
Was just looking at superchargers for my '94 D21 earlier today and the Eaton m62 costs almost as much as my truck did, but I loath the idea of installing a turbo.
>>
>>28679774
oh yeah, i forgot about the vg stock option. the sr20det is still a good option as i'm sure it has lots of aftermarket support and was pretty reliable up to 400 or so. some of the earlier rbs were rev happy as well and lots of power potential. hard to find parts for them now though i'd guess. on the old s12 board i was on, there was one guy in aus who had a fj24 s-12 running in the 10s. this was 2 decades ago so that was quite a feat. that motor also had huge potential but i'm sure everything would have to be custom due to the rarity. i'd still try to get the cadet refreshed and run that with mild mods. i had the ca20et slightly modded and was still pretty fun for its time.

yeah that works, oil pressure is built up within seconds on a typical engine but since yours is likely dry, it might take a bit longer. use the oil pressure light as a guide
How long do I run on my initial oil?
500-1000 miles (da da da da). people out there say to use non synthetic when breaking in an engine in order to further help break in the engine but it really doesn't matter.

Ben diggles car. 1000hp on pump fuel.
It was a drag car, got sold for cheap, turned into a drift car. He bought it back in the last few years and has made it more into TA / hill climb car.
The fj was a popular motor for 4cyl drag rails and had a lot of support...Bens power output was not uncommon, just that he kept it in a gazelle made it special.

My blue coupe is a ca20e with a cam, and honestly I don't find it to be lacking on fun despite the paltry 110hp. I figure that the 150-190hp range is where I would want the car to be able to flog it constantly without it being excessively dangerous or hard to live with. My Cedric has it's stock 270PS and it's pretty boring to never be able to floor it and open it up because of traffic - driving a zippy car slow is worse than driving a slow car flat out, every time.

crank no start on a 7.3 powerstroke. ran when parked. scanner data shows high pressure oil pump is not making pressure. starting fluid was sprayed into the intake and it didnt start so now im thinking its low compression.
I was going to do a compression test, but getting the valve covers off without pulling the engine looks like a nightmare. so I just spent $550 goy bucks and bought a new re-manufactured hpop and im hoping that does the trick.

If your compression is so low it won't start on ether you have no compression.
>>
>>28680923
>If your compression is so low it won't start on ether you have no compression.
one would assume. however there is another explaination I need to dig into. when I bought this thing it had a pack rat living between the heads and in the intake. it chewed a hole in the intake tube and made a nest between the air intake filter and the turbo. when PO started it up, pack rat nest material most likely got sucked into the engine (no intercooler). I believe this to be true because I disassembled the turbo and cleaned rat poop out of it so i assume material got post the turbo and into the cylinder.
im not familar enough with this engine to say where the material got stuck, assuming it got stuck at all, but maybe the issue here is a lack of air and the failed shot of ether proves that.
scanner data insists the HPOP is not building pressure. sadly no CEL codes to go off

Need to do the rear, and there is a deal on for £70 for 2xdiscs 2xpads.
Anyone ever heard of them?

I've heard of them, though never used them. Also never heard any problems, though, so make of that what you will.

Found this in my 02 jeep last saturday. Got the 6.0, 32RH. I have no fuckin clue how, but the tube broke and got in the way of the shift linkage and kept me from getting P, 1, and N was stiff to get. My buddy did some fab sorcery with a chunk of brake line. 2 weeks of chasing my tail doing ez diag, works been fuckin busy, my fellow jeepers were bloody useless.

Did the bands, filter and fluid while i was there on top of an oil change. Now the bastards throwing codes for the SKIM key. The original has been fine, not really sure.
