I have been debating buying one of these because they are still relatively cheap (solid rust-free examples for £20-25k). Are these the value they are for a reason, for example compared to an E30 M3?

They're fine. Their values are propped up by the people who own them, so value is highly subjective.

Maybe, I just find it weird that the M5 and M3 of the same years are worth double, and the CSL before it goes for even more. Even the cars that came after like the 850CSi sells for more.

There isn't an "M6", that's why it's worth less. Regardless of engine, suspension, or whatever else, if it has more than a single letter and single number, then it isn't and M car and is worth less than "real" M cars. E39 850CSi's are a good example of this, too. An M8 in everything but badge.
>>
These are lovely cars but they're definitely a GT and not a sports car, which is probably why the M5 and M3 are worth more. It's a shame because they look great, have an incredible engine in them and a genuinely nice interior. They're sort of a connoisseur pick

There's no parts being made for it anymore, if you buy it and some dickwad dings it, you're out of luck.
Unless you know some guy who works at BMW in Germany that is, but that'll cost you.

I sure hope they stay that way until I can buy one.

You should be quick, 80s and 90s cars are going up in value even more

/o/ wrong as ever

They were only called the M6 in the US and Japan. It was the M635CSi in Europe

Why would anyone care about yurop?

Because that's where the OP is from

Because they were made in Europe

If you buy one there are a few expensive things to watch for. An airflow sensor is about £500. The TRX tyres are awful and about £400 each. You'll need to do the chain every 100k, and consider an aftermarket tensioner/ guides. Plus you'll spend every winter checking for rust and water ingress.

I had a '81 633CSi/5 20 years ago when they were shitboxes. Paid $2800. It was a barge by 80s bmw standards and had a few episodes of unexpected liftoff oversteer, but it was fun. If it had the S38 power it would have been an even better GT. Build quality far worse than 80s Mercedes-Benz.
>>28666361
The euro cars of this era made way more power because of US emissions rules, and also euro cars didnt have gay rubber shock absorber bumpers.
>>28666438
They still make trx tires? 20 years ago when I had an e24 everyone just swapped wheels for non-trx wheels.

The fun thing about sharknoses in the US is that the a/c systems are completely inadequate even with the optional rear a/c console.

Oh also the e24 is based on either the e12 (pre-82) or e28 (83 onward). So the e24 is two different generations underneath.
Both are heavier than their 5 series equivalents. The 5 is the better performer. But for whatever reason the 5 rusts out rapidly. Probably because they were more likely to be dailies.
>>
They were £2500 cars a decade ago and don’t contribute toward some boomer pension by paying anything more than that. They’re dogs. £25k would get you into a TVR Tuscan or, if you must have a BMW a decent Alpina
>>
>>28665629
Dont wait, do it now,
>>
>>28667246
That was a decade ago as you said yourself, have you seen the modern car market?
>>28667161
Still made by Michelin and Longstone. In my opinion the original metric alloys looks the best.
>>
>>28668073
It doesn’t mean you should pay for it just because someone is asking it. If you are desperate for a BMW then there are other options at that price point. If you want a classic/performance car in general and have £25k burning a hole in your pocket you can do a lot better. They’re priced where they are compared to other “classic” M cars and Alpinas because they were the 80s equivalent to the current M8. It also explains why 90s 8 Series prices were where they were for so long, they really weren’t that good
>>
>>28665629
They are pretty boaty but I think by modern standards they feel lively af.
>>
>>28668603
That's exactly how I feel about the E30 M3. Also please name the cars you suggest for £25k, would actually like to shop around
>>
Deals can still be had:
L6 was a luxury trim with leather wrapped interior. Was supposed to be the luxury equivalent to "M". Didn't really pan out.

Mutts can't build cars
