it actively makes subarus run worse even. glad I never fell for this retarded meme

feed your engine hot air
in exchange you get chuchuchu noises

on a modern car you should unlock your ECU and retune it for a new intake.
you cant just bolt shit on and expect more HP on anything made after 2005
>>
I put an intake like that on a scooter and it sounded like a little piggy everywhere I went.
>>
>>28671184
Well, it does suck money out of your wallet.
That's about all it does though.

On a related note, are these things any good or are they just a meme too?

Modern engines all have a PCV system but if you're doing aftermarket forced induction a catch can is probably a good idea
>>
>>28671266
Early 16V Twingos need one because their PCV system is badly designed. There's no real drawbacks to having one other than it costing money and having to fit somewhere.

Most OEM PCV systems are kinda bad.
Catch cans basically never hurts anything.
Race cars especially benefit from setting up 5/8in dual lines to keep crankcase pressure from building.
>>
>>28671266
it's a necessity on direct injected engines to prevent the valves from becoming clogged.
>>
>>28671266
It keeps the oil from my cars shitty ccv system out of the intake.
>>
>>28671184
Wrong. It looks cool & sounds cools. And because its cool it makes me believe my car is faster. And because I believe its faster, it is (the CIA don't want you to know this).

A good many of them are prone to breaking, these are at least a good back up.

More noise better
Loud car fast car!!
>>
>>28671184
Wrong.
It takes up too much space costs too much and forces you to learn new and different ways to use hose clamps in ways they were never meant to be used.
>>
>>28672880
Why don't GDI cars come with catch cans from the factory?
>>
>>28671184
>filter requires oil
>filter oil fucks up your MAF sensor
Have fun cleaning that up.
>>
>>28672945
Because regular people arent going to empty it regularly.
Manufacturers would rather take their chances hoping the car will run out of warranty before there is an issue.
>>
>>28672950
Could there be some kind of a catch can that filters the oil and makes it go back to the sump?
>>
>>28672950
Can't you just have the bottom of a catchcan drain back into the sump?
>>
>>28672964
Yeah, ideally with a one-way valve, but that adds extra cost and only helps a car last beyond the warranty period.
>>
>>28671184
Actually it's pretty good for fuel consumption. Sucking in hot air instead of cold will net you about 1 MPG.
>>
>>28671212
really depends on the car. some ecus have the ability to learn and adjust on its own up to a point.
>>
>>28671266
Nobody will tell you that catch cans can actually make your crankcase pressure higher. You are supposed to make a custom oil cap with a hose fitting into it so that you can attach a pressure gauge to read out your crank case pressure. Another thing is that they are more points for a boost leak to occur . If its on the pcv side in most turbo cars you are going from 2 connections ,pcv to intake manifold to at least 4 connections with the can.

my car uses map and wideband from the factory though
>>
>>28672962
yes, its called an air oil separator. the drawback is that the water in the blow by will return to the oil vs a can where you would empty it out

Bmws will adjust for it. They run two wide bands for a reason.

shit will build up to the point of being a problem a long time after the warranty has expired.

Acura Integra with the B18B1. An Injen CAI that move the filter from next to the engine (stock) to behind my driver's fog-light added a noticeable amount of engine noise and 4+ highway MPG. I had to fuck with the throttle cable a bit because it was sucking in enough air for it to hit lean under hard load. Hondas in general benefit from the meme-tier CAI/Headers because they have very restrictive intake and exhaust manifolds
>>
>>28673820
Mid-2000s Volvos are even able to adjust to turbo upgrades to some degree. Really any ECU that can properly monitor and control the AFR should be able to adapt to having more airflow.
>>
>>28673820
90s Nissans would relearn, all you had to do after your mods was disconnect the battery and drain the charge from the system. When you reconnected it would start off in learning mode.

>Nobody will tell you that catch cans can actually make your crankcase pressure higher
I appreciate that a catch can adds more points of failure for boost leak to occur, but how can it add more case pressure? You're effectively just adding the volume of the can and lines to the case, so it'd reduce pressure marginally right?
