Was browsing marketplace and found this bad boy. Reminded back to playing Need for Speed as a kid.Is this a good project car? How's the aftermarket for parts?
>>28674373no, fwd gutless shitboxonly ever got 'stardom' due to f&tf
>>28674373Mitsubishi in 2025 is quickly eclipsing Nissan as the go-to poverty brand
The turbo model was p. cool but they were all trashed a long time ago so only the lame base I4 models are left in drivable condition.
>>286743731st rule of owning old cars club is never buy a mitsubishi2nd rule of owning old cars club is NEVER BUY A MITSUBISHI
>>28676417They're ok as long as you stick to basic grocery getter models. If you go for hi performance Mitsubishis you deserve every bad thing that comes to you.
>>28676434I went as a passenger on a cruise for older mitsubishi turbo cars and it was crazy. Everyone there had a yard full of parts cars and on the actual cruise they had walky talkies >temperature ok>volts ok>roger>temperature a bit highIt was like they're taking a 100 year old steam train out for a run.
Mitsubishi loved to push the envelope with experimental tunes and other gimmicks so their engines didn't last too long.
>>28676438I should be fair, Though this did happen, my housemate had a couple of turbo starions and a turbo cordia and he did keep them all running most of the time by putting a lot of hours in. It used to annoy him that after a mountain pass run his exhaust manifold was glowing cherry red and everything under the hood was too hot to touch but I could hold my hand on my engine valve cover no worries.
like if you just drove a 93 Mirage i doubt it would cause very many problems but a 3000GT? lol you're fucked. they rival German cars for fragility.
>>28676449Chrysler turbos of the 80s-90s were as bad. They did not intend those things to last longer than the warranty.
If its not a GS-T or GSX then walk away unless you want a bubbley looking civicEclipses that are GSX are literally 2 door evos and most the retards that flap their gums about mitsubishi A. Never owned one B. Never drove one. C. DOESNT KNOW SHIT ABOUT IT
The non-turbo 2G coupes had a Plymouth / Dodge drivetrain (I had one in HS '05-07).The convertibles have an actual mitsu drivetrain which I understand was more reliable. That said it's basically scrap 25 years later.
>>28677527>That said it's basically scrap 25 years laterincomprehensible ESL post that says something is scrap without saying what exactly
>>28677536I've been posting on DSM forums for 20 years. They're fucking dead at this point unless someone cared for them.I was obsessed with these. In '05 when I bought my '95 the speedometer didn't even work, the plastic Dodge speed pickup died at 89k miles, I had no idea how many miles were actually on it. My engine had a 1-layer copper headgasket between an iron-heavy block and aluminum head, it was already blown. They are famously unreliable. But whatever. They were made and designed in Illinois. For OP, the saving grace may be the convertible-only JP engine. But by all means, drive one as your only car.
>>28677548>see crank walk>walk crank walk
>>28674373What was with the hood bump on those?
>>28677564To clear the timing cover on the 4g63 and mitsu didn't want to make two different hoods for turbo and na models.
>>28674373I had multiple ones, both na and turbo, from both generations but never touched a modded one and never would. If you are looking for a project dont bother with it. The only ones worth it now are the ones that survived being modded to death by retards thinking they are civics and the more stock the better, everything else is overpriced beat garbage instead of just overpriced high mileage.Back in the day you used to just have to look out for the legit abused to death ones now they are all at the age where the road is trying to reclaim them. Rust wasnt a big deal on these unless you were in the saltiest parts of america but now you have them with rotted towers all over the place.>>28674392The 2000s and approving anybody for a car during that time is what killed mitsubishi and made them the poverty brand they are today. They dont sell anything worth looking at anymore and its a shame it got like this.
>>28677527Iirc the non turbo 2nd gens had the highest domestic content % for a car in chryslers line at the time despite being japanese with a mexican engine.
>>28677674>Back in the day you used to just have to look out for the legit abused to death ones now they are all at the age where the road is trying to reclaim them. https://www.dsmtuners.com/threads/strut-tower-repair-for-my-99-eclipse.515039/There are discussions here about repairing the strut towers and the consensus was as you'd guess, mainly an issue in road salt states so California or AZ Eclipses should be safe.
get 'em from the Sun Belt states and never drive them in wintertime if you live where salt is used
https://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/154540-strut-tower-rust-how-bad-is-okay/Strut tower rust is common in road salt states which as anon said could be avoided by only purchasing California and whatnot cars. As he said if it's more than just surface rust you can cut out the bad part and weld a piece of sheet metal in place, and coating it so it doesn't rust again.
Only thing worse than a Mitsubishi is a Mazda
>>28678914Or don't drive in the wintertime, whatever works.
Lots of hate for mitsubishi ITT but Im pretty stoked on my old montero
>>28677889>Rust wasnt a big deal on these unless you were in the saltiest parts of america but now you have them with rotted towers all over the placeis an extremely poorly phrased statement that self-contradicts>rust wasn't a big deal on Eclipses>except it was because the towers would rust from salt
>>28679051yeah Mazda also loved experimental engine tunes and tech gimmicks that didn't hold up too well
>>28679119What it probably meant to say is the undercarriage on Eclipse were well coated at the factory so you didn't have to worry about rust outside maybe Michigan but the towers are not protected and will rust in salt states. You may be able to repair them like in the linked thread but otherwise it's better to get an Eclipse from a Sun Belt state.
I saw a first gen Eclipse on Christmas Day 2023. Winter but it was pretty dry at that point with no snow and salt wouldn't have been on the road then.
