Recently I have been thinking about whether "reckless" street driving or speeding down country lanes has a correlation with mental health. I am still fairly new to driving at 25 in the shithole that is the UK, but I have recently ran into a rutt mentally and socially and have been getting really dangerous compulsions on the road. I never had them before, but ever since I have ran into a spat of lonliness induced anxiety in recent months and longing for past failed relationships I have been more drawn to speeding and pushing how fast I can go without needing to slow down. Shifting to 5th in a 30 zone and then rev blipping down to 3rd or 2nd on junctions or corners for instance, or going 60 in a country lane. I have been questioning myself internally why I would consider such things, but when thr negative thoughts start creeping back into mind I just seem to default to:>fuck it, who caresuntil my headspace clears up again and I settle down. It's really intrusive though, not in a aggresive way like channeling frustration but more so like an apathetic devil may care sort of way.As a result I have been wondering whether this sort of experience is true for other drivers who do actually speed and cruise on public roads. A member of my family used to street cruise a ton when he was young, and while he has never admitted to it as such being the cause, he had a very rough youth and had a girlfriend who was constanly on verge of killing herself. When I used to go to college a lot of other students would brag about or show dashcam chase videos like the Getaway in Stockholm series, but the few who actually had a legit investment in cruising beyond cool factor were from broken homes or suffering with drugs.

It's a way to get out of your head and put you 'in the moment'. Driving fast puts you in a life or death situation that forces you to be here and now. There's other ways to do this, like meditating. But meditating and learning to view your thoughts as thoughts to pull your head out of your ass takes more practice and effort than simply ripping down a country road at 100mph does.
