2002 Clapped out Mitsubishi Montero with 300k miles being sold for $800 near me. Should I do it? (Pic unrelated)
>>
Depends on what it needs and parts availability. Cheap enough project unless there's rot on it, but if it's anywhere near the salt belt there's too much rust on it to make it worth the time to play with.

Absolutely. These things are great. And it's a 4 door. They are getting rare. Put a TDI in it or something.

Picrel is an 02. Anon's is the previous generation. If it were the one in this pic, and it ran....fuck yes.
>>
>>28675610
Oh nvm then. I only care about the previous gen.
>>
>>28675587
It's $800. If the thing runs, worse case scenario you just resell it, should be able to get $800 for just about any vehicle if it still runs & drives.
>>
The amount of rust underneath is going to be a sight to behold.
Get that thing on the lift and you'll see the voyager satellite through the floorpan
>>
OMW to look at it now. Will report back
>>
>>28675731
Looks like it's from out west. Rust won't be a real issue....if it runs you should just grab it.
>>
>>28675731
...why? Its $800 wasted. At 300k it probably doesnt have much life left in the drivetrain. The scrap yard will pay you $200 for it

I've seen shoguns (UK version of the montero) on the farms with 500k miles on them. rotted out, but mechanically sound
>>
>>28675587
800 is too much try to get them down to 500
>>
>>28675742
I got an FJ80 from sone dude in a parking lot for $1100 with 311k miles on it and daily drove it for 3 years with nothing but suspension work.
>>
>more miles is... LE GOOD
>>
>>28675992
generally speaking vehicles don't rack up miles without regular maintenance
>>
>>28676606
yeah that car screams "well maintained"

Got the car mates. It actually only had 235k miles. Surprisingly runs very well. Shifts smooth and engine makes absolutely no noise. I just drove it about 200 miles with no issues whatsoever. Steering, suspension, breaks, heat and ac all great.
Honestly happier with this than the current gen vehicle I just sold for 30k. Its completely true, they just dont make em like they used to.

Noice
>>
>>28676765
happy for you anon
>>
>>28675742
These things take retarded amounts of miles, having seen a buddy blow one up over 340k miles after he decided to do WOT on a cold engine for five years straight no matter if it was hot enough to cook eggs on pavement or cold enough to freeze water midair.
>>
>>28676765
Good for you man, hope you somehow get a million miles out of it.
>>
>>28676765
Congratz, solid car.

Give it a fresh hood or paint the hood or wrap it, then it won't even look like an 800$ car.
>>
>>28676765
Good job.
>>
>>28676765
Oi, what you mean surprisingly? It's a Mitsu.
>>
i had one with 320km. and it looked and worked brand new. i regretted selling it, the engine is absolutely long last
>>
>>28676765
finally, some actual /o/ content
>>
>>28676765
that's a montero sport
>>
>>28677148
Was advertised as montero but what can you do? At least it has LSD
>>
>>28676765
hell yeah
>>
>>28677373
Not a big deal anyways imo I would happily drive either. Earlier models had leaf springs in the rear which I think would be the biggest difference for me but I'm pretty sure they had coils by the time yours would have been built. Both models had a torsion bar front end and they used the same engines. I would guess they probably used the same 4WD system as well but I don't actually know for sure. Honestly who gives a shit it sounds like a great deal to me.
>>
>>28676765
Is it the 3.2L diesel? They should last for well over 700000km.
>>
>>28678666
I dont think any mitsu diesel was ever sold in the US
>>
Saw this thread at zero replies and ignored it because it sounded like the average basement dweller spam but holy shit OP delivered.
Ive bought (2) FSBs for $800 each (about 5 years apart, weird coincidence) just for historical context for those tracking ORV prices. Nowadays I could sell either of those Broncos (still have 1) for 20x that price.

So what now Mr. Montero?
I only deal with "proper" trucks so I have no clue what the aftermarket support for this thing is.
But are we talking about just a grocery getter or should I be looking forward to your posts in /ORG/ when you roll it on a trail (?)

>Nowadays I could sell either of those Broncos (still have 1) for 20x that price.
I. KNOW. WHAT. I GOT
NO TIREKICKERS
NO LOW BALLS
>>
>>28680012
Those are all worn out pieces of shit. And one is a Bronco II.
Mine has a fresh drivetrain, suspension, brakes, interior...
>>
>>28679935
Honestly I have no idea if an aftermarket community even exists for these things. I could imagine it would benefit quite a bit from upgraded suspension etc. Do these things make solid overlanding rigs? Could use it as daily but not needed
>>
>>28680012
>>28680106
COVID raped obs bronco prices but they've come back down because the people buying them were yuppies that couldn't swing a new bronco. Once they got within $10k of each other it was over. If you read the bronco forums there's tons of women crying about how they should've bought new lmao.

I'm glad theyve come down because I couldn't afford what they were wanting just 2-4 years ago.
>>
>>28680492
Nah, its entirely greedy boomers trying to fake a collectors market for a mass produced truck. Read that delusional freaks post. He thinks because he "freshened up" the engine of a $800 POS its now worth $20k kek. Complete alternate reality fantasy world.
>>
>>28675587
>pink mirrors
>pink wipers
the assumption is it was owned by a girl and as such, the follow up assumption is it probably ran out of oil at some point
>>
>>28680503
Found the nowrench basement dweller thats still driving the shitbox hand-me-down corolla their parents gave them in high school.

Just my rear diff was $2,000 in parts.
Nobody ever gets back what they put into a build but life isnt some Joe Dirt fantasy where you can grab restored american iron for the loose change in your pocket.
A low mileage, rust & accident free Bronco was $1,000 two decades ago.
Now theres only a fraction of pristine examples left and the $1,000 Bronco option is going to be clapped out and sitting in the driveway waiting for that weekly rockauto delivery to keep moving under its own power.
Condition is 100% related to sale price.
And I've tracked KBB pricing for decades. 20 years ago it was $950. KBB uses actual sales records so this is what the current market reflects.
