Carplay and rgb lights mogs this trash
screen, 2025 :/screen, 1985 :O
>>28679494Yes.
>>28679499checked for truth
>>28679494Touch display that you HAVE to use to operate functions of the car such as HVAC :/Fairly uncomplicated display that allows for more efficient delivery of information without negatively altering the UX in any significant matter :OI shouldn't have to explain to you that a 7 segment display speedometer is not the same thing as what is effectively an iPad stuck on my dashboard.
>Weyou never owned this car. the MSRP equivalent of this is like $60k today lmao
>>28679419couldn't you just replicate that on a screen? Don't most "premium" cars with full digital dashes have different dash modes to begin with?
>>28679555Implication being that people don't have $60k cars today?
>>28679569>couldn't you just replicate that on a screen
>>28679569Yes and that is quite good, arguably even better since you have more options. Lacks a bit of the magic of the real deal but that's just nostalgia. The issue isn't the gauges, it's the center screen that you're forced to use for damn near everything. And is way too fucking bright just like the rest if the interior. Why does every button in a modern car light up in blinding white? Get all these fucking lumens out of my car.
>>28679572no the implication is that most people on this board find anything above $19,500 way too expensive, so im not sure why theyre cheering for a car that they would have called overpriced junk 40 years ago
>>28679569Yep. a customizable oled display looks nice
>>28679591who are you even strawmanning atp
>>28679555I did. Turns out... Vfd displays are just as cool as they were 40 years ago.
>>28679610did you misunderstand what i just said ?The 300zx was't some cheap car anyone could have had by any means lmao. No one who is crying about modern cars could have afforded one in the past. >>28679624That's cool but you didn't buy this brand new off the lot lol.
>>28679631I did not not. My father had a C4 vette though, and it was cool when I was a kid. This stuffs just fun.
>>28679631>No one who is crying about modern cars could have afforded one in the past....and? The hell does that have to do with anything? People will shit on anything here regardless of whether they can afford it or not, you're on channel four. In fact I'll shit on that 300ZX right now by saying it's a maintenance nightmare because good luck getting at anything, especially a Z32, and also it's a N*ssan and they fucking suck too.
>>28679638I didn't say it wasn't cool, I'm saying that if you're gonna buy it in 2025 for like $15k after 40 years of depreciation you can't complain about how these types of cars don't exist anymore.
>>28679642See >>28679643It's not just about affording, it's about even if you could afford it, you still wouldn't buy it, because you think it's a bad deal or whatever. Would you buy a brand new 300zx for $60k? Probably not.
>>28679647Based on having two of them, and driving one in highschool my nostalgia glasses are pretty thick. If my option for a 60k car was a 400z...or a just as delivered 1986 turbo Z ? Given the two I'd absolutely pick the z31 every time not even a contest.
>>28679643But you can. The fact that a car that walks, talks, and acts like a 1980s or 1990s car cannot be bought new is true, and is something you can be upset about.>>28679647I wouldn't buy any car new for 60k because I don't have 60k. And if I did, I wouldn't buy what's on offer today. Not sour grapes, either. I've driven plenty, I don't enjoy it nearly as much as driving older cars. It's not bad, just not as good as it could be. The worst part has to be the drive-by-wire and electronic power steering. if I had 60k to burn on a car, I'd use it on an old car. Not because I don't want a new car, but because the new cars that are out there don't appeal to me. If this conversation took place a few months ago I'd have conceded the Alpine A110 because that would have just barely been a new car, but even those are discontinued now. Easily the most fun and engaging car made after 2010 I've ever driven, and it wasn't even manual.
>>28679419How hard would it be to make something like this and just slap it into any car?
>>28679682We no longer have the technology, sadly.
>>28679682You'd just need a microcontroller, PCB, some green LEDs, and an ECU connection
>>28679662>But you can>something you can be upset aboutBut you can't though. Car companies aren't interested in how you get your 4th hand car after 40 years. They want to know whether a $60k car sells brand new off the lot. The rest is not their concern.
>LCD in my sc400 is dieing
>>28679704Nice work defending a soulless entity that exists to multiply currency. If you think about people for a second, engineers and designers would probably love to work on a timeless design that would look cool and be fun 20 years down the line. There's a reason many cars that were made in the 80s and 90s are still sought after today, the people making them were passionate
>>28679801>engineers and designers would probably love to work on a timeless design that would look cool and be fun 20 yearsWho is paying those engineers? Should they produce something that sells for a loss or doesn't sell at all?
>>28679643What an idiotic comment.Yeah no shit nobody is buying it these new, they don't make them.I have to assume you're trolling because otherwise you are incredibly stupid.
>>28679837Yes they should, otherwise we just end up with boring white blobs like we mostly have now. Creative minds also flourish while working on things they actually care about, often leading to new technologies and advancement (see any factory racing teams). The endless pursuit of capital above all else is not a good thing, some really amazing cars were made at a loss ; Bugatti Veyron comes to mind.
>>28679631>The 300zx was't some cheap car anyone could have had by any means lmao.History revisionism. From 2005 to 2015 if you had $2000 cash, you would have a Z31 in decent condition within six months off Craigslist or Autotrader. $2800 if you were impatient and wanted it this week. The Z32 was always $18,000 on up, or a clapped out mess for $8,000.t. owned four of these things and a 280ZX.The car market is so shit right now I feel bad for zoomers entering the workforce with no wrenchable used car supply.
>>28679682The "tacho torque" meter would be the difficult thing because nobody makes anything like that aftermarket. The bars of the graph go up to indicate the engine output torque at the current RPM. It's not as cool as it sounds.>>28679697>LEDs will look the same as LCD.No m8.
>>28679844>Yes they shouldAnd who should fund it? You and me via taxpayer money? Explain how to set up such a corporation. >>28679928I meant brand new in 1985 you dumb tard
>>28679494Its green and cool, it looks like a nuclear submarine control panel. Shut the fuck up
>>28679579my dad has this exact car and hes obsessed with screens and he specifically buys facelifts / newer models if they have a bigger screen than the previous one
>>28679952It doesn't matter when you meant, you're wrong in either case.1. The MSRP of the 1985 300ZX was $9,000 - $10,000. $11,000 if you were too impatient to wait for dealer specials and insisted on the top packaged "GLL" and turbocharger. When it was new, it was considered the affordable, working man's sports car. It was one of the three things Nissan was aiming hard for with the Z31 and the 280ZX before it.2. In 2005 - 2015, a Z could be a first car for a young kid in high school or fresh out of high school working their part time McJob. It was RWD, torquey, could oversteer at almost any RPM, and it had T Tops. Girls love T Tops. "Can I take my top off?" was the normal on a sunny day.-Just don't say "yes" while the car is in motion. I was doing 45 and coming up to a stop when I said "yes" thinking she was going to wait for the stop. She didn't. The moment she pulled the lever, it flew out behind us, it hit the pavement and spun like a wheel, bouncing twice on its edges before exploding like the T-1000 at the end of Terminator 2.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D9HSPW6lMHM
>>28679631>The 300zx was't some cheap car anyone could have hadPre covid, depreciation meant anyone could own any car when it was ~5 to 10 years old.
The commercials were the peak of 80s kino-cheesiness.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nx0J9zU7gzs&https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-ow-68F0PMhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R8nr8qEpvZE
>>28679952It has to be a private company obviously, but it's simple. You just sell some models to appease the general (tasteless) consumers, and use profits to fund interesting research and fun projects. A good non-automotive example is colleges, who use student tuition as a way to fund first party research, and aggregate primary sources.
>>28679494>screen, 1985Either a vacuum fluorescent display or a CRT. Cutting edge technology, the best of the best they could do at the time. We were 7ish years from expensive lcd screens in radios and 14ish years from cheap tacky lcd screens in every aftermarket radio.>screen, 2025It's your gauges, the radio, and the hvac controls. They're a glossy fingerprint magnet that gets drowned out by glare in the sun and doesn't dim at night so your low light vision is fucked. Hardware is slow and unresponsive because it's got the digitizer, processor, and ram from a 2015 $49 black Friday ewaste special tablet. Software is worse than the hardware.
>>28679569I'd literally rather blow my brains out with a shotgun
>>28679704>Car companies aren't interested in how you get your 4th hand car after 40 years. They want to know whether a $60k car sells brand new off the lot. The rest is not their concern. And I find that to be a shame. I understand that it's true and I don't blame them for doing what they do, but I would have liked if it weren't the case. That's all that's being lamented here.
>>28680281It used to be that manufacturers bragged about longevity. It was either Ford or Chevy that used to run ads saying that like 90% of the pickups they sold were still on the road. Now they try to engineer it to fall apart like the bluesmobile the instant all the warranties expire.
>>28680446Yeah they definitely don't brag about how Built Ford Tough their trucks are anymore. Nuh uh.
>>28679591Doesn't really matter what people can afford new. This is also an issue for people who buy cheap used cars, because eventually these new cars with their garbage appliance interiors become the cheap used cars. Assuming they haven't all fallen apart already.
>>28680459As the vehicles have shifted to a more appliance like market, rather than a personal extension I think people just care for them less too. While I think that car interiors are made cheaper than they were in the late 80s and early 90s...I think the shift has just changed how people take care of it.Before people could buy a shit box like a tercell and they would vacuum it weekly, clean the interior and keep it waxed, intending to keep the car for decades. Now that leasing and finance to own models have really exploded with longer terms and more favourable rates people just see it as a temporary purchase to be replaced when the new model comes out so they don't bother with keeping them nice, or being gentle with it. It's just an expendable item.
>>28679569>needs 3 diff pages to replicate STANDARD gauge layouts for higher trim and sports cars of the 80s/90sLmao and that shit costs more too.
>>28679483>CarplayI still don't know what this is
>>28680525It's like a step above a Bluetooth connection. You can control much of your phone through the infotainment screen. If you use an iPhone it's called Apple CarPlay, if you have an Android phone it's called Android Auto. Same shit, different ass. It's basically just a replacement for a phone holder on your dashboard, kinda overrated imho.
>>28680535why do you need all that shit? i want my music, nothing more
>>28680541If it's just a regular bluetooth connection between the radio and the phone, you have to use the phone to control the music, select tracks, etc. which is a real pain in the ass. With carplay it's all controlled from the screen so you don't even have to take the phone out of your pocket.
>>28680541Idk I guess Google Maps and the handsfree calling is pretty useful, but beyond that, like I said, kinda overrated imho. Like I said the biggest perk is just not haivng to have a phone mount. It'll text-to-speech notifications for you which I guess is neat but I've never used it personally. Probably helps deter people from reading them while driving though.
>>28679419These look cool but vfd displays of this era genuinely sucked. Distracting at night, hard to see in direct sun, constantly have to fiddle with the dimmer as you travel, and the resolution of the information on the gauges sucks ass and can make it more difficult or stressful to diagnose a problem like overheating. >example: temp gauge has 7 positions, 4 on the cold side, 1 in the middle, 2 on the hot side >hot side of of the gauge can only flip between slightly warmer than normal, and cracked block overheating territory >no way to tell which way its going to go because its a vfd display>makes it difficult and stressful to diagnose a car thats having heating problemsThat's just one example. They also have a high failure rate and are hard to fix. Having owned some kino 80s digital dash cars, I dont plan to buy another one. Ill stick to analog because its just plainly superior. Even the simulated digital gauges which are technically still analog are better than these.
>>28679494touchscreen, 2025 :/non-touchscreen, 1985 :O
>>28680272>doesn't dim at nightmine dims when i turn on my headlightsthe op screen is cooler but i feel like that might be a nightmare to replace now if its CRT since they dont manufacture those anymore.
i dont understand 2 things in life1. Why do cars have more than 1 screen. Shrimply not needed. Do it like ferrari used to do2. and why this gook wants me to wait 2 minutes before every post
>>28680554I can control my music through the screen in my M5; I don't know what carplay is either
>>286807471. because fuck you that's why2. because you're from reddit and need to go back
>>28680557I don't get the need for android auto integration of my bank's app.
>>28680762I haven't used it extensively but not all your apps are available in the infotainment screen. Pretty sure it's only your music, navigation, and messaging apps.
>>28680786I can control all that shit in my M5 with no "carplay"
>>28680788You can open your text messages without touching your phone in a car that lacks Carplay? What gen M5 is it?
>>28680790F10. Pretty sure my 2013 gs350 could do the same thing
It's been a while since I've sat in an F10 but I don't think those had Carplay. Anyway if you liked that feature (or at least weren't adverse to it) Apple Carplay/Android Auto is the same thing except turned into a standard.
>>28680786No but my bank app shows up on the infotainment system I haven't ever clicked it.
>>28680800I don't remember mine ever doing that. Seems unnecessary indeed but if memory serves there's a way to choose which apps do and don't show up. I've only ever used Android Auto, not Carplay, but I'm pretty sure there's quite some overlap between the two.
>>28679419They didn't take anything, you probably fucking sold the car for something newer or didnt look after it and let it rot into the ground. No one forced you to get rid of these cars, it was a choice you made, one way or another.
>>28680033>The MSRP of the 1985 300ZX was $9,000 - $10,000People that lie to prove their point are pathetic

>>28680907>turd & beigewhy would anyone
>>28680907Looks better than many new cars, and that's 40 years old. That's pretty astounding and I doubt car plastics and interiors from today will fair as well over the years .>>28680897I think they googled the price of a 200sx because 9k is about what a base model 200sx was, with 11-12k for the turbo coupe being about right.Z car was almost twice the cost though.

Keep in mind people pay over $1000 a month to keep their wet-timing-belt driven vehicles on the road.1986 2+2? Turbo or N/A? I'm guessing turbo because of the spoiler, but N/A because of the missing front lip.Did all 86's come with 5 lug wheels? >>28681557Ayy fair enough. But I swear people just find excuses to not like something, instead of finding something they do like
>>28680790>>28680788the main benefit of android auto / car play is navigation integration. you can see can see real time traffic information and the maps don't need to be updated. headunits with navigation need either some kind of paid subscription to keep the maps updated and have live traffic, or you need to download updated maps and install via SD card or some shit. same with music streaming. without a phone, you need a sirius subscription on the headunit. but with aa/carplay you can just use your phone's navigation/spotify for that stuff. having navigation and music side-by-side on a large screen is really neat
