I've passed them with multiple body mounts missing, rotted brake lines and inches of play in the steering components.

Not a fan of them, but I guess they're pretty fair in here. If you have 3 major defects in your car, it's a fail, if you don't pass emissions, it's a fail, if there's a major safety hazard, automatic fail and not allowed to be driven (red sticker) until the issue is fixed and you pass inspection. I got the red sticker because my brake bleed nipple started leaking right on the lift, inspector was struggling if he'd mark it as a minor notification, but didn't want to risk it, so I got the red label instead. Aftermarket shit rarely matters, some get it inspected and certified, I've never bothered.Legally speaking even aftermarket wheels need to be certified and inspected. Engine swaps are a bit iffy. A V8 swapped miata will get kicked right out unless you've got the proper dyno slips and done the "modification inspection". A 6 cyl swap in a 4 banger BMW might get you a really long look from the inspector and depending on how well you know the dude, they'll let it pass without complaining.

I live in Japan, drive a 30 year old Japanese car. I take it in every two years myself and pass the test and pay the fee. It's easy as long as you get your oil changed and keep your car clean. The only ones that have any trouble are the street racers who have to unmodify their car to pass the test and then remodify the car once it passes.
