why aren't poorfag mid-rears a thing anymore?
Even in the god damn '70's you could get a 914, or an X1/9.
>>
No fun allowed!
It was cheaper to make special cars back then, now there's so much regulation involved that none would ever break even, nor would it come out light, cheap AND fast.
>>
>>28691744
People will espouse "muh regulations" like companies care about anything more than making the absolute cheapest shit to sell to you at the highest point possible. Mid engine died because normies can't handle it. The MR2 snap oversteer meme was the death knell outside of luxury cars.
>>
>>28691746
they care about making money and there is no money in selling cheap fun cars, unless you’re selling them in the black as a marketing tool

every GR86 that gets sold is another person that isnt driving a tacoma, which has much higher margins
>>
>>28691754
funny how the shitbox gr86 is considered enthusiast when just 20 years ago FR was the standard for everything but vans and euro cuckboxes
>>
>>28691754
maybe they shouldn't have forced tacoma buyers into an even bigger time bomb of an engine and transmission combo than the fucking toyobaru then

20 years ago was 2005 you fucking moron. Everyone had figured out fwd packaging and switched to it for most commuter vehicles.
>>
>>28691754
Wouldn't a marketeer take in account that the GR86 driver wouldn't want a Tacoma to begin with or am I being massively cucked here?
>>
>>28691780
20 years ago was the beginning of the cuckening
>>
>>28691785
It's not just that. The Tacoma's mere existence is more profitable than the 86, because the Tacoma is, ultimately, yet another parts bin special lego-slapped ontop of the TNGA-F modular platform. Whereas the 86 is built on its own unique platform.
This is ultimately what dooms non-richfag sports cars. They need bespoke platforms to be actually good, but those platforms are a giant financial burden on non-luxury auto corporations.
>>
>>28691777
Fieros are dirt cheap, but they are that way for a reason. They are shit.
>>
>>28691785
the proper time to buy a fun sports car is either in college or immediately after college. for nearly everyone else that isn’t in the 18-24 demographic, in any other phase of life, youre better off buying a RAV4 or Tacoma. and most people (especially those who arent homeowners) won’t consider two cars as an option. so if you can only afford one car, you recognize this and choose the boring but practical option

>>28691761
its a nice chassis with a parts bin powertrain which is part of what makes it cheap. it competes more with the Miata than the Mustang

The MR2 needs more love from enthusiasts it's a straight up better miata
>>

Well MR2 would be said emerde but they still changed the name.
The funniest is the audi e-tron, étron meaning shit in french, but they kept the name because its literally SHIT

More love? AW11s that aren't piles of rust are 3x the cost of early Miatas. SW20s that aren't NA turds are 3x the cost of 90/2000s Miatas. Spyders are ugly and all convertibles which makes them less valuable plus the SMT is ass and a majority of them have it.

It's the enshittification of everything anon.

In the 70s-80s corporations saw a massive productivity boom with the addition of computers.

In the 80s-90s we saw computing performance double every year and productivity skyrocketed.

90s we saw way more widespread use of cnc machines, robotic arms etc. making shit got easier and cheaper than ever.

In the early 2000s the internet was more robust and widely used, productivity skyrocketed.

2000-2010 saw no real major gains, software became more efficient and more available, computers got more powerful but it was mostly useful for research and less for engineering or making shit.

2010-2025 basically no changes.

So for 40 years there were massive productivity spikes that set earnings expecations and cost savings for employers.

In the last 25 years there's been basically nothing.

They're trying so hard to shoehorn ai into everything now because they have to find the next productivity spike, because all of their metrics are based on this endless growth that no longer exists. Whole thing is gonna implode on itself when people realize ai isn't going to give them the next spike they need to keep the smoke and mirrors going.

Now that money they used for fun projects is going to keeping the company from going tits up.

Its all gonna collapse soon and China will dominate the manufacturing space because the ccp dumps money in constantly to undercut everyone else.

Back in the 70s-80s you could sell it under the pretense of it being an economy car- light, small engine, small frontal area = good aero, just enough car to get you places without cargo, like a motorcycle but without having to gear up. Nowadays economy means hybrid or electric, which means weight and size, while sporty means at very least 200hp (and people will still complain that it's not 500hp for 20k), and everyone wants a practical boot, so a small mid-engined car doesn't make sense, very few people would buy it.

2010-2020 saw rapid rise of e-commerce and battery technology, and in the last 5 years AI has grown from this to videos that you have to really squint to tell apart. The progress is barreling forward faster than ever, it just left behind the topic of this thread. In 2030s we will see cars without autopilot banned.

None of that is useful for engineering productivity. The only thing that's changed in the day to day life of an engineer in the last 25-30 years is faster computers and faster cad software. That's it. Making shit still takes the same time, the engineering work still takes the same time, the assembly still takes the same time. Sure some middle manager can be replaced by ai now but that doesn't change productivity of the people who actually make the thing.

In 40 years Engineers went from drawing on paper with pencil to lines on a screen to full blown 3d models. In the last 25 years it's been... slightly faster 3d models? There's been no real productivity boom, yet every company expects to exceed their earnings growth every year. It's just not gonna happen.

And I've tried using ai for my engineering work, the only thing it can do is look up local codes, create general documentation and give me vague guidelines on solving a math problem. It fucks up the math, it fucks up dimensions, it can't do drawings and any documentation I need to review and edit it anyways. It saves me maybe 30 mins a day at best. Vs going from paper to computer cad would have probably doubled productivity for the engineers.

why didn't they go for a manual??? same for the Alpine...

I dont know how the marketing cope with that 30 year ago but it is still write in capital on them and everybody call them that TODAY
It's ok if your dream car mean (and is) literally SHIT
Get over it

E-tron (étron) is more elegant it's an old word nobody use it anymore but yes indeed it mean more TURD
For an EV it's perfect all EV should be called like that

picrelated are the ugly ones tho bro.

automated manufacturing at the big boys has really taken off though. also no more through hole pcba's has helped improve efficiency and speed of mfg.
Yes most shops are still fairly manual for a variety of steps but I've been pretty amazed at the volume and 'no touch' setups that some of the big boy tier 1's are doing.
Of course it's not 'i'm supervising my robot mfg line' yet but it's a LOT closer than I expected.
>>
>>28694729
Manual has packaging considerations, and general lack of availability. Like, there are three and a half transmission manufacturers in the world, and you gotta use what they offer. No manual that fits- no manual in general. Doing cables and linkages to shift a manual is non-trivial too, Subaru (including Toyobaru) and Miata get away with it because they are longtitudional and the stick just sticks up into the interior. And also, like, have you sat in a 4C? You're touching knees with the passenger, there's literally no space for a gear lever, and barely enough space for two feet in the foot well. As much as I like manuals, not everything can have them.
>>
If people bought the fucking things new instead of waiting until theyre the 3rd or 4th owner, manufacturers would make them. You have nobody to blame except yourselves, you cheapass poorfags.
>>
>>28694766
if there is room for a manual in an Elise (or any small sportscar from the 70's-60's) there is room for it in a 4C / Alpine.
I know the real reason (Alfa/Alpine only wanted to spend time and money on one type of transmission only. and since only old fucks have the money to buy a sportscar and prefer automatic gearboxes...), but it's still a shame.
>>
>>28694800
This.
The grownups in the automaker executive suites know something the kids on /o/ don't: money talks, bullshit walks.

Crying on a Mindanese tuk-tuk chat room isn't going to convince anyone to make a cheap MR, masses of people buying new sports cars from dealerships will.
Otherwise sports cars will go the way of the sedan.
>>
>>28691744
>No fun allowed!
this
not just cars, this is the case with everything now, almost like it's by design
>>
Poorfags wouldn’t buy a new sports car. There’s no reason to make a new car for people who only buy used
>>
>automaker makes cheap sports car
>everyone shits on it because it is cheap

Tell me this board didn't shit all over the brz and nissan z for years and years

If I was a car maker I would stick to cuckovers and luxury suv's because people buy those and don't expect them to outperform, say, a H1 humvee off road like sports car people are mad that their brz isn't an Enzo.
>>
>>28691785
This is economically factored in before marketers even get a turn. Cars have to be designed, prototyped, tested, redesigned, reprototyped, retested, manufactured, tested again, and marketed all before they can be sold. Every step in that chain costs massive amounts of money. If accountants estimate that they won't sell enough cars to make that entire development chain worth it, they'll axe the project and won't make the car. Many many projects, automotive and otherwise, die in the womb like this before you ever even get to hear about them. These guys are all looking at whether everyone else's poverty sports cars are selling, realize they aren't, and then delete any plans to make any. Sure, they aren't going to get (You)r sale, but that wasn't going to make up for the massive overall loss they would have taken, so they aren't going to care about you taking your business elsewhere. Not catering to your interests is a net gain and in their best economic interest.
