This is good. My current car is significantly older than the concept of smartphones. I don't trust iOS and Android to still exist 30 years from now, and I don't want my radio to be bricked as a result.
I can't wait to have to download multiple apps on my phone that all have to work perfectly in order to change the temperature on my GM. Oh I need to go to the dealership to update the software in my car and it'll cost an hour of labour? Great
If it meant new GM automobiles didn't have iPads on them, I'd be all for it, but they still will. Applecar Play/Android Auto is the only thing that makes having a tablet glued to the dash make sense, . Without it, there's no point. I can genuinely appreciate it when I rent a car, because I only rent one when I'm going on a trip. Having my phone seamlessly pair to the econobox I got for nav and music is nice.

This is going to be the biggest pain in the ass if every manufacturer goes this route. When my mom recently had her 2023 Corolla updated at her last oil change, it completely changed the UI and forced me to have to come over to figure it out for her. She already has the onboard Navigation, because you have to pay for the whole package if you want wireless carplay, remote start, and remote lock (because obviously you want the feature that makes that onboard nav useless baked in instead of paying for all it separately). The onboard navigation is legitimately terrible and unusable. The terrible touch screen and auto fill that means you have to type out the entire address down to the Zip Code to ensure it takes you to the right place is just awful. It's traffic and construction data is also completely off compared to Google or Apple Maps. This can only piss off older people, the only people buying new cars.
My car has one of those proprietary computers for which GPS hasn't had a patch by its maker since 2015. In the end, I have to resort to using waze on my phone as my city changes and mutates more than I thought it would. Moral of the story, don't fall for it. In fact, don't buy cars with onboard computers at all.

On my 2019 Kia, the built-in infotainment system is way better. I feel like Android Auto which also requires a wire is poor fit for the 10'' display. However it's still a nice emergency option to have so fuck car manufacturers for this.

Android Auto is the only way I would ever accept any of these head units. It's usually optional anyways, there's another OS underneath that's running the built in UI which still gives you radio and some other basic functionality. Android Auto practically functions as a virtual machine.
