>General Motors has announced that its entire line of automobiles, including both gas-powered and electric vehicles, will phase out both Apple Car Play or Android Auto over the next several years.

>Barra confirmed the phase-out while guesting on the “Decoder” podcast, noting the company plans to roll out a “new centralized computing platform” aimed to launch to 2028, which will transition its entire car lineup to a unified in-car experience. The platform will update GM’s current Android-powered infotainment implementation with a Google Gemini-powered assistant and an assortment of other custom apps, built both in-house and with partners.
>>
This is good. My current car is significantly older than the concept of smartphones. I don't trust iOS and Android to still exist 30 years from now, and I don't want my radio to be bricked as a result.
>>
I can't wait to have to download multiple apps on my phone that all have to work perfectly in order to change the temperature on my GM. Oh I need to go to the dealership to update the software in my car and it'll cost an hour of labour? Great
>>
If it meant new GM automobiles didn't have iPads on them, I'd be all for it, but they still will.
Applecar Play/Android Auto is the only thing that makes having a tablet glued to the dash make sense, . Without it, there's no point.
I can genuinely appreciate it when I rent a car, because I only rent one when I'm going on a trip. Having my phone seamlessly pair to the econobox I got for nav and music is nice.
>>
>>28692356
would be cool if they just either came with an empty double din slot, or a SUPER FUCKING BASIC radio. then they could just you know, focus on making cars and let firms who who are better at such things, handle the infotainment.
but noooooooo, they need to find a way to bloat the price by 20k with chinky retarded cunty faggot electronics that barely work.
>>
This is going to be the biggest pain in the ass if every manufacturer goes this route.
When my mom recently had her 2023 Corolla updated at her last oil change, it completely changed the UI and forced me to have to come over to figure it out for her. She already has the onboard Navigation, because you have to pay for the whole package if you want wireless carplay, remote start, and remote lock (because obviously you want the feature that makes that onboard nav useless baked in instead of paying for all it separately).
The onboard navigation is legitimately terrible and unusable. The terrible touch screen and auto fill that means you have to type out the entire address down to the Zip Code to ensure it takes you to the right place is just awful. It's traffic and construction data is also completely off compared to Google or Apple Maps.
This can only piss off older people, the only people buying new cars.
>>
My car has one of those proprietary computers for which GPS hasn't had a patch by its maker since 2015. In the end, I have to resort to using waze on my phone as my city changes and mutates more than I thought it would.
Moral of the story, don't fall for it. In fact, don't buy cars with onboard computers at all.
>>
>>28692356
> wow we are going to replace well known , well maintained, perfectly good car tech no one complains about with our own haphazard trash ecosystem made by the dumbest fucks so we can charge for our own app trash
>>
>>28692356
With Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, you give the phone access to the car's screen. With a proprietary system like this it's the other way around, you give the car access to your phone, your contacts etc.
This means that GM can harvest more data about you to sell to third parties, and they don't have to pay for the Android Auto and Apple CarPlay licenses anymore. It's a win-win for them.
>>
>>28692422
I'm sure they'll lose some sales over it. I refused to get a 718 because it has no android auto. All the car companies have apps already anyway to harvest data so this is just them being cheap with the licenses
>>
>>28692443
You know you buy a $40 dongle from Amazon and it gives you wireless android auto right? Without doing anything except plugging it into your USB slot. For 718s and 991s
>>
>>28692356
The normalfags will be pissed off, but you should be too. This is not about getting rid of bullshit screens, but about switching the software from one that reports everything you do back to Apple/Google to one that reports everything you do back to GM. They want more data to harvest and sell. That is literally the only reason they're doing it.
>>
>>28692356
don't make me tap the sign
>gm management retardation
>>
>>28692454
they already have exactly that with onjeet. oh you think it's for vehicle safety?
this is about cutting out the competition.
>>
>>28692452
br/o/ he's not really buying a car.
it has nothing to do with android auto.
mostly to do with not having any money.
lol i mean c'mon, how long you been here?
>>
>>28692361
It's literally replacing the user to bring their own system with their own custom android one lmao
>>
I hope all cars remain 2din.
>>
Based
All anybody ever needed was an aux cord and maybe bluetooth
>>
>>28692422
Not an accident either.
>>
I need a cd player
>>
I have a 2024 Korean vehicle. A few times the entire dash went blank. So no speedometer, no car play, nothing. Love these new features
>>
>>28692356
Normies won't care. I'm constantly seeing new cars with giant tablets with the driver still holding and looking at their fucking phone. I can never get android auto to work so fuck it.
>>
>>28692452
Yeah I saw that but I wanted something that worked out of the box. Thought about getting an old iPhone just for the car. Anyway I couldn't get an allocation for a 718, but I did get a 992 one.
>>
>>28692361
Android auto and carplay are lightyears ahead of whatever proprietary infotainment slop OEMs want to package. There is literally no way anything they slap together can compete with two of the largest software companies in existence.
>>
>>28692589
Maybe not overall, but I don't need my car to do everything my phone does, I only need it to do a couple of things (navigation, audio from w/e source I have and integrating with all the car hardware) and I need it to do those things well.
You may or may not like their hardware implementation, but BMW software, for example, is pretty good at doing all of those things - it's definitely better at integrating with the hardware and, personally, I like the built-in navigation better than apple or google maps (but that might be because I'm not in the US).
>>
>>28692361
>hmm yes, I trust a mediocre brand that has struggled to update their platforms and is notoriously terrible with reliability to upkeep and update an entire OS
>they will certainly do a better job at software development than two companies that are not only in the top 5 of their respective sectors(something that gm as a car manufacturer isnt), but are also worth thousands of times more each

GM can't even keep up with their competition or make cars that work properly past their warranty
>>
>>28692581
Normies will absolutely care when they drive 2-3 cars and decide that carplay is more convenient than not-carplay. Especially anybody who leases
>>
I'm just waiting for GM to slip into their terms of service something along the lines of:
>using a phone mount of any kind to bypass using GM-CONNECT™ will void the warranty

Anyway, if you're dumb enough to buy a GM you deserve the problems you'll be having.
>>
>>28692627
>I only need it to do a couple of things (navigation, audio from w/e source I have and integrating with all the car hardware) and I need it to do those things well.
That's what android auto and carplay do.
>>
>>28692356
>lol in 2 years we'll have some new buggy jeet software to replace the old buggy jeet software
My god, what happened to "technology" and "engineering"? Actual development? Horsepower, mpg, reliability gains in X years? It it all just increasingly buggy software, programmed by foreigners, with exponentially expanding software and dev time requirements now? Is that all they can even hope to promise? Can they not even deliver THAT?
>>
>>28692361
Bro it's GM bringing in their own system, do you really think their piece of shit is even going to be supported beyond this decade?
>>
>>28692422
This. The way CarPlay and Android Auto work is they are just essentially a second screen for your phone and don't actually share or store any data on the car. They're the equivalent to plugging in a DVD player to your TV, it's just a display.
>>
>>28692356
I never used either really, but shopping for used cars "apple carplay" was in the title of almost every listing.
>>
>>28692750
why make lightweight efficient software with good ui design when you can just throw more ram at it

It's genuinely really useful and people like it most since you don't have to learn whatever proprietary system the manufacturer wants to use. If you've ever had a car from the early days of GPS navigation and infotainment, then you'll know what I mean. Car manufacturers are notorious for ugly and unintuitive software.
>>
>>28692356
In reality:
>god I am sick of paying these licensing fees to google and apple for this tech shit
>lets just make our own, we can do better than them
Its like they completely forgot what brought about carplay and AA in the first place:
shitty manufacturer infotainment systems
>>
>>28692781
Hell the last generation GX kept the same GPS since the early 2000s
>>
>>28692785
And here's 2004
>>
>>28692785
Oh man, that system. I drove one of those around for work sometimes and that fucking navigation system was utter shit.
>>
>>28692361
It's GM wanting to make money off their customer's datas. Sell your driving habits to insurance companies, build a profile of your searches and app use so they know what ads to put on your map and app's front page as "recommandation.s" The usual.

Maybe they even gain more money from not paying for carplay/android auto ad get paid for putting Gemini in their cars instead.
>>
>>28692785
>>28692792

only difference is screen res

But the current system just works, how is this better?
>>
>>28692740
>That's what android auto and carplay do.
I wish. But they don't, unfortunately. Native nav makes use of things like the HUD projector and front-facing camera, but carplay/AA will only display instructions on the infotainment screen.
>>
On my 2019 Kia, the built-in infotainment system is way better. I feel like Android Auto which also requires a wire is poor fit for the 10'' display. However it's still a nice emergency option to have so fuck car manufacturers for this.
>>
>>28692356
Rentals will be happier now they can collect data without having to share it with Apple or Google.
>>
>>28692909
It's better, but not for you.
>>
>>28692581
>I can never get android auto to work so fuck it.
Skill issue
>>
>>28692909
It's better for GM because they can collect more data on you (and sell it)
>>
>>28692361
Yeah bro, I cant wait to pay a subscription just to turn on my music without adds!
>>
>>28692986
>carplay/AA will only display instructions on the infotainment screen
My 2020 Corolla and its ancient infotainment that just barely supports Android Auto can display instructions, the road's name/number and distance to the next turn in the gauge cluster displays, using the car's own graphics.
There's no up-to-date public documentation of how AA works on the inside, but older leaked docs mention a device-to-vehicle "Navigation Status" protocol that's probably responsible for that.

If the protocol can communicate information like that to the car, I don't see why it couldn't be shown on the car's HUD or anything, really.
>>
>>28692799
They also get paid by Sirius and att to include connectivity, since those are subscription generators (satellite radio and data plans).
>>
>>28692986
This is an integration failure, not an issue with Android Auto.
>>
>>28692361
It’s crazy that people like you are allowed to drive and even vote. Kill yourself.
>>
Android Auto is the only way I would ever accept any of these head units. It's usually optional anyways, there's another OS underneath that's running the built in UI which still gives you radio and some other basic functionality. Android Auto practically functions as a virtual machine.
>>
>>28692356
they're going to make their own gaynigger "infotainment" OS that sucks big black cock and they're going to paywall it a subscription. death to america and death to american ceos.
>>
>>28692776
A lot of developers believe this way and it's fucking annoying
>>
>>28692776
>>28693550
Throw 50 mismanaged jeets at the task and that is what you get. Lowest common denominator tools and algorithms. Maybe ~5 of them can code stuff on their own, if you're lucky.
Probably still going to be a shitshow when the management insists on splitting them into their own little silos/pigpens and handling all the communication between them.
>>
>>28693550
UNUSED RAM IS WASTED RAM BRO
>>
Every automotive news about modern cars makes me increasingly more glad about my 2002 shitbox
>>
Can't wait for cars to be forcibly immobilised for the owner's own safety when the manufacturer stop providing support for its system.

>trading one Google platform for another
lol
>>
>>28692781
I had a TomTom about 15 years ago. I used it maybe three times before deciding it was easier to just memorise the route I was taking
