What do you guys use? Am looking to upgrade the cheapo $15 walmart one I have. Have heard good recommendations about bluetooth ones but eventually want to get one of the wired tablet style types.
Do all the ~$300 models from Autel, Mucar, Xtools etc do basically the same thing? Am looking for something with bidirectional control and freeze frame data but dont really think I'll even need topography or whatever.

I like these.
Not quite the full tablet scanners but pretty good.
The china boy scanner tablets for $800 do a lot, but they also don't last long.

I use this one in my main rig and it's been good so far. Unfortunately it can't do anything bi-directional aside from clearing codes. I've used the top right kind and they're pretty shitty. They're flaky and don't last very long. Those basic display wires models suck imo and the BT kind are just so much more useful. I like using torque pro and looking at all my live data when I do hard or long drives. I can also data log and shit.

Just get the harbor freight model or an ELM327 clone if you're cheap.

The new Icon ones? I did hear about how they're 25% off if you buy them in store with a coupon, so that brings the T7 down to ~300 which is the same as the Xtools I'm eyeing. Idk for some reason I really want a wired tablet form factor one for kinda "pro work" in addition to a cheapo BT that I can carry basically everywhere. Was also thinking I'll just keep the cable attached all the time and throw it in a bigger case than using whatever one comes with it that you have to disconnect and reconnect it to use whenever putting it away
Would it worth it to just skip the tablet and go for a laptop adapter if Im going to be dragging that along anyways?

I just have a J2534-to-USB cable. Cost like 20 quid on fleabay. I have a hacked version of the official Toyota Techstream software.
It's perfect, you can read all codes, you can do all the main dealer servicing.
20 quid. Bargain.
>b-but the Carly obd2 device my heckin favourite streamer is shilling can read codes
enjoy paying 100 bucks for the device. Then 100 bucks a year for subscription. Plus tip.
