Recently got this VW rail, it's been titled years ago (1997) and hasnt seen the road in 2 years. How the fuck do I insure this thing, it's registered as a ASVE (assembled vehicle) and has a custom ten digit vin. Even places like hagerty won't cover it.
>>28693656why would you insure that?just drive it or get another fucking vin.
>>28693660So I don't get hassled by cops, and so I can actually transfer the title to my name.I'm honestly thinking about getting a title and vinplate from another vw bug and throwing it on there.
>>28693681You're gonna get hassled whether it's insured or not.
>>28693681seargant guadalupe won't care whether it comes back to a fuckin f350 or a mercedes benz, probably any car will do.
>>28693687Getting a fine/getting your shit towed or being hassled is two different things anon
>>28693656Sounds a little odd - how is everyone building a kit-car and getting insurance?
>>28693656Shockingly State Farm insured my Locost, which is also titled as an assembled vehicle, but it is pretty expensive. I've heard Rally insurance is pretty good for kit cars, I plan on getting a quote there soon. Sweet rail, anon.
>>28693681Buying a Beetle title and vin plate is definitely the cheaper way to go though. >>28693687It makes a huge difference when you can easily pull out all the legal documentation when the cops pull you over. Most cops will absolutely look for an excuse to tow your rattletrap, kek.
>>28693925Appreciate it man, I'll look into both of those. My plan is to continue getting the frame and like you have a lotus 7 inspired build, just rear engined. Time to teach myself fiberglass bodywork. Are those it's on yours? Things fucking sweet>>28693935Hey hey she'll be a beautiful car one day. Once I fix all the body work and get some actual seats in it...
>>28693656Used to be a guy around here w/ a street legal Sprint Car. He welded a piece of Model T frame to it and got it titled as a Model T.
>>28693925Why is insurance expensive? Is the car worth a lot?
>>28693925My 7 is under $170/6mo. State Farm. I think it was $110 2 yrs ago. It's titled as a 70's Toyota which might be helping me out with rates, not sure how any of that works.
Working on this right now. Drives well but I'm not a body guy so it is taking me a bit to finish. Recently bought a new supra so I've lost a little motivation.
>>28693656You could build something like this with zero mechanical experience with 2 or 4 ebike hub motors and it would be a fucking speed machine if they were like 5000w motors or higher. The motors would also only run you like $1000 total. It's incredibly cheap to build a car out of electric hub motors, not sure why no one is doing this. Why pay $30k+ on a car when you could build a more reliable one fir $3k with infinite right to repair and cheap replacement motors?
>>28693656Try Lloyd’s of London. Not a traditional insurer they will cover anything. Woll be expensive tho
>>28694437>not sure why no one is doing this. There are probably a few very good reasons
>>28694349That body work is pretty sweet. How are you mounting it to the tube frame? I'm trying to take inspiration from a lotus 7 for the front end of my rail and need some decent ideas how to mount the bodywork
>>28694347two reasons I would guess>nonexistent safety features.he is guaranteed to rack up a huge medical bill in any accident.>unknown build quality.compared to a factory-assembled and inspected vehicle, he is more likely to have a dangerous mechanical failure that causes a crash
>>28694691Maybe it's just the right mix of dangerous but still survivable, considering motorcycles are cheap to insure
>>28694683WDYMYou can clearly see the brackets in that pic
>>28694768not sure, there's a big difference in mass between a motorcycle and one of these, guessing most of these kits are like 2,000 lb? at least on a bike the only thing you're going to fuck up real bad is yourself, which is partly why they're cheap
>>28694275>Are those it's on yours? Things fucking sweet Thanks mate. I didn't do any fiberglass on mine. The only glass is the nosecone, which the guy who started the build before me had bought, but never installed. The rest is just really badly done sheet aluminum, which I plan on redoing when I re-body it. >Hey hey she'll be a beautiful car one day.I say that about mine too, kek, but mine is currently also a bit of a rattletrap and the cops love pulling it over. You'll get there though, and when you finish it, you'll have more fun driving it than literally anything else you could buy. Definitely post updates, I love seeing the progress of all the other kit cars on here. >>28694347Like the other anons said, the insurance company doesn't know how well the car is built, and you'll almost certainly be mangled in any small accident. >>28694348The fact it's titled as something else helps immensely. A lot of insurance companies get skeeved out for the reasons discussed. I'm considering buying some cheap shitbox and grafting a section of the firewall with the vin tag into the Locost just for cheaper insurance. >>28694768I would 100% rather wreck on a bike than in this thing. You sit up higher on a bike and will get thrown from the accident. In a small kit car, you will get steamrolled by an SUV, then torn apart by the frame, kek. >>28694683IMO, the best way to mount any fiberglass is to make mounting tabs with a flat flange, then epoxy them to the inside of the fiberglass peice and glass over the flange to secure it.
>>28694437fuckoff
>>28694437Go ahead and build it then einstein
>>28694437>5000w1,000 watts is 1.341 HP, so with four you would have a 27HP AWD car. This would be OK due to electric torque if the car was light, but it wouldn't be light because of the batteries. Unless you intended to never leave the city, then it could be fun.
>>28694437>The motors would also only run you like $1000 totalWhat about the batteries, BCM, ECMs, controls, and wiring?
>>28694892How do cops react when they (presumably) pull you over/run your tags and it reports it as some other shitbox car?
>>28696828You laugh, tell the cops that there is a little bit of the original car left, and show them the vin plate if they ask. You just have to be sure that you have all the equipment to be road legal, and they likely won't hassle you. Every time I've gotten pulled over in the locost, the cops were cool and just wanted to look at it. They'll usually check to make sure your lights work properly and send you on your way.
