Hello /o/ I've never been here before but I figured you guys will know. I'm a 37yo poorfag who never learned how to drive, I need to find something under 4 grand that will run for at least a couple of years and not be expensive to maintain. Any recommendations?

Buick le Sabre 3800 and keep on your oil changes.

These look alright

Some come supercharged and are very reliable floating sofas.

Any Toyota or Honda from the late 90s through 2010. Try to get one with under 200,000 miles and an automatic transmission since you're learning to drive.

Don't get a V6 Honda with cylinder deactivation. Otherwise solid advice.
>>
>>28695591
What's the cylinder deactivation and why is it bad?
>>
>>28695599
It saves a tiny amount of gas but places different thermal stress loads on the engine block which will eventually warp, burn oil, and possibly crack
Baked-in reliability issues

Good to know

Jazz? Mirage?

obvious answer. If all it has to be is a car, anything that's not an old toyota or honda shitbox is a choice to spend more and/or have more problems. Curiously a lot of things with "toyota" on them are severely surcharged on craigslist but with corollas they created something that is just SO tame and SO common that they're still being given away

This seems to be the direction I'm leaning but the Buick and Kia look alright too. I do need to keep gas to a minimum but I'm only going to be driving about 30 miles a day just get me to work and back so that shouldn't be a big deal. Mostly I don't want to wind up paying another thousand dollars to fix a cheap shit box 6months or a year after I buy it.

anecdotally my corolla was 1k, and I ended up puttin maybe 500 into it on rockauto to make it really feel trustworthy. So some of it has to do with your willingness to fuck around which many of us welcome but I doubt is your priority. FWIW their parts are cheap and plentiful, and when you do need to replace something it's very easy. Something could definitely go wrong with it but I feel extremely confident about it vis-a-vis it's never going to really fuck me over.

I would say no matter what you choose, learn to do a good inspection; I always regret not spending more time on this. See if you can spend some time with the car without the owner standing there with his arms crossed (aka not in the grocery store parking lot when he wants to be somewhere else in 15 min.) He should know when fluids were changed.
Learn to look for "tells" that the car has been treated rough. A lot of cars have little buyer's guides you can read that lay details out for you and even suggest bargaining points. Excessive tire and brake wear should be factored into the price. Don't hesitate to nickel and dime the guy, don't be an asshole but ya know. The money and headache you might save doing this can work out to hundreds of dollars an hour so you should welcome the chance even if it feels excessive. If he doesn't want to listen to reason that's his problem and also a bad sign imo.

I would like to learn how to do as much work as possible myself but like I said I'm new to it so I don't know anything yet or have anything other than basic tools in my toolbox and don't want to spend a bunch of money on specialized tools I'll only use once. Also what are these tells that the car has been treated roughly? I'll probably be buying in or near a city so I imagine there will be a lot of that.

I'm sure there must be youtube videos that go over what to look for in a used car in general terms, if you want to go and look up a specific model you can check for videos or forum discussions that highlight common issues. Broadly you want to see that it has been looked after, is it clean and straight, are the tires bald or old, etc. Ask about maintenance, has it been maintained by a shop, how often has the oil and pads been done, when did it last get the timing done, etc. It might be too much expense given that you're looking at buying a cheap shitbox but you can ask that the car gets checked over by a mechanic prior to purchasing, most places you'll need to do this anyway to ensure the car is roadworthy for registration, this is probably a good idea if you have no idea what you're looking at. This is why people recommend something like a Camry or a Corolla if you're buying a nugget, because they're fairly reliable even with intermittent maintenance and there's excellent parts availability for when shit does break because there are so many of them.

Ford Focus, literally any of them.
>2012-2018 Autos
Have TCM replaced at dealer, DPS6 regularly makes it to 160k before actually blowing up.
>2011 and under autos
Zero issues, very robust
>manuals
Same transmission from introduction to 2018. MTX-75 lasts forever
>engine
2.0l, lasts forever on basic maintenance
ST / SVT > RS for longevity if you wanted the sportier model.

Fixed with VCM Tuner. Intercepts engine temperature signal that enables the cylinder deactivation thereby precluding any cylinder deactivation. I have it in my Odyssey, noticeably better driving and shift points because that ECO shit sucks on the low end.

Beater 2wd Ford or Chevy 1/2 ton. Preferably manual, with a posi. Cheap parts available anytime, anywhere. Easy to work on and simple. Good snow tires and weight in the back, if you need that sort of thing.
