Who makes the most reliable car battery?
My mom needs a new one and she asked for my advice. I'm inclined to say optimal yellow top but what kind of experiences have you fellas had with different brands?
>>
Optima quality isn't what it used to be anymore.
>>
>>28696233
I dunno, when my battery dies I usually just swap it out with the closest parked car I can find
>>
>>28696245
That might have worked 50 years ago.
>>
>>28696233

Most battery brands are rebadges of the same OE suppliers (eg johnson controls).
For price to quality ratio you can't beat the walmart everstart platinum agm.
Next step up would be something with a lithium chemistry.
Cold cranking amps and discharge cycles are the numbers to pay attention too.

Does your country have Varta? They usually have a very long life, can easily last 10 years
>>
>>28696556
>Varta
Isn't Varta the manufacturer of those Toyota 12 V batteries that have been the sole reason for Toyotas topping vehicle unreliability charts in Europe recently?
Had to replace mine after ~4 years because one day it just wouldn't hold a charge above 10 volts or so. The car was certainly trying to charge it properly, so I guess one of the cells just died somehow.

The Varta business is in pretty dire shape, so maybe they're just slapping the logo on random turkshit in hopes it'll sell, who knows.

They haven't made batteries in 7 years. They sold their entire battery division off to Clarios which is why optima sucks now.
>>
>>28696302
Yes, not from the factory but they exist.
>>
The 12 yo OEM battery of my Ford finally died earlier this year, so that was bretty good.
>>
>>28696233
It doesn't really matter anon. Pay attention to what it's rated for. I buy Farm and Fleet Platinum and they last me around 8 years. The stats are more important than the brand.

i have a delkor one, it does the job well.
>>
>>28696645
I swear those OEM motorcraft batteries are amazing...
>>
Have a Odyssey just because they're the only ones making AGM batteries in size 27

>>28696242
I've had my Optima in a CTS for 9 years and my Autel battery tester still says it has >90% of its rated CCAs.

>>28696302
For racing applications
>>
>>28696850
Old Optimas were made from high quality virgin lead. Now they're made from recycled bullshit like most batteries out there.
>>
>>28696233
Only Battery maker I know that uses fresh New leadin bats is Odyssey and Panasonic.
Both are very very expensive

Everyone else just uses the same recycled lead and the same chinese factory.
& Garbage electronics
That's why modern batteries have sub 5yr lifespans 90% of the time.

Enjoy.
Because the new ones are 2yr lifespan batteries.

A real high end lithium battery is gonna set you back $1,000+
The Chinese garbage like "antigravity" is gonna die or burn your car down.

what

Also
>burn your car down
>has $20 label maker labels saying DO NOT JUMP START!
>>
Boomers would always call my shop asking for Interstate agms so I've got them in the family fleet. Costco price for them is reasonable and id rather deal with them for any kind of return/warranty than basically any other retailer

Race tracks require terminal covers.
So I just 3d printed ones from Carbon fiber filled Nylon.
Easy fix

>>28696905
Braille says very explicitly to not jump-start their lithium batteries.
Idk why but I'm gonna listen.
You'll find that same G30 in damn near every endurance race car in Lemans and Daytona.
Almost all Pikes Peak cars as well.
6lb Bois work well.

Costco

Take the everstart pill
>>
Is Exide any good? I see them at every store here in the EU.
>>
>>28697086
That's only cheaper if your time is worthless.
>>
>>28696233
I'd probably trust anything made by a company who makes forklift batteries or other commercial batteries. As long as they make their own and don't just slap their label on something. I never have any issues with the department stores house brand but I do take care of my electrical systems. It gets to below -40c and +40c here which is hell for a battery so they only last 5-7 years regardless of what you buy.
>>
>>28696233
Car batteries aren't the same as the energizer batteries in you fire tv remote kiddo, they're rechargeable.
A charger costs less than a new battery.
Charge it up overnight and voila, brand new battery

>>
>>28698167
Your battery has a dead cell and/or you have a parasitic drain. A healthy and fully charged lead acid should be at 12.6v at rest.
>>

It's a modern Subaru so it certainly has a parasitic drain. But I heard I need a topped off, healthy battery before I can test for said parasitic drain

How the fuck do you even choose a battery by yourself? How do I know if I have i-ELOOP?

>>28696233
Thanks for the topic anon.
I think reliability is basically bullshit.
Even if you buy the most reliable product you can find, you can still end up being a statistic.
You need to take leaps of faiths and try different brands then stick with one.
>>
Just go to Walmart or some shit and get one that has the biggest warranty of 5+ yrs

Car battery warranty basically is how long it should last. If it has 5 year warranty it'll be good for 5 years.
>>
>>28698220
Not to mention you can easily kill the battery before the warranty is up and get a replacement that is good for as many more years, probably constitutes fraud but it's so easy I can only imagine that it was cooked into the sticker price

I-ELOOP is a just a big capacitor and you should see it under fuel usage menu as bunch of bars. Just get an AGM battery like BOSCH 0 092 S5A 050 as it just works both both versions.
>>
>>28696233
They're all made by the same 3 or so companies, just shop around whatever has the best price:warranty ratio
>>
>>28696556
Varta is made by Johnson Controls, just like Bosch.
>>
>>28698791
You mean Clarios, Johnson Controls sold their battery division in 2019.
