Why do even the most careful car guys completely ignore axle oil changes?
what the fuck is an axle
>>28697137Sell your car immediately.
I was beginning to feel bad about dumping my shitbox off at the mechanic I didnt want to tack on more work.
>>28697131When is the last time you flossed? When is the last time you flushed all your brake fluid?Did you ever vacuum that french fry from under the seat? You are now breathing voluntarily.
Diff fluid changes are easy as piss, too.15+ year old diff fluid smells so bad you have to hold back vomiting.
>>28697131I flush my trans and diff at least once a year.
Because it really, really, REALLY does not need to be done more than once every 20 years. Its a completely enclosed part of the car, pickled from the factory. Unless you're really grinding the shit out of the diff somehow, there is no need to change it.
>>28697131I don't. Every old solid axle car have fucked up bearings in rear diff so that's first thing I ever do.In regular cars idk, once poured oil from 500kkm civic gearbox and it looked like new.
>>28697277so thats where they store the surstroming
>>28697131I replace my transaxle fluid every time I change gear ratios. Which isn't every weekend but at least a couple times per season.>>28697255And flush brake fluid after every weekend of use.>>28697277You mean it smells GREAT.
>>28697277>15+ year old diff fluid smells so bad you have to hold back vomitingFucking pussy. Nothing better than the smell of gear oil in the shop
>>28697131every single time Ive bought a used car, or my parents bought a used car, or when my GF bought a used car, or I made new friends who recently bought a used car, I always flushed all fluids.Brake/clutch, coolant, transmissions, diff, engine obviously. i also send out an oil sample for analysis.my last used car i bought was a Miata, I drove it home and the next day I heard a whirling noise coming from the rear end. i did all the fluids and the rear was close to empty. i managed to put another 20k on that 1.6 before it blew up.worst part is stupid ford/gm that dont have drain bolts and you have to take the cover off to get rid of the fluid. i buy updated covers that come with drain plugs. i do the same for all my small engine machines.
>>28697255Probably 2 weeks agoAll? Idk but I turkey basted the reservoir and flushed the rears about 2 years ago.I never eat in my car.
>>28697131Speak for yourself
>>28697297>Its a completely enclosed part of the car, pickled from the factory.Where have I heard this before...
>>28697606Auto transmissions produce way more heat than diffs or manual transmissions. I’ve never had an internal transmission issue and I only do that every 100k miles. I’m sure diffs are the same.
>>28697137the guy from gunston roses
>>28697255floss in the shower ftw>>28697451>You mean it smells GREAT.wait till you heat it up
unless you have lsd the fluid will last like 200k miles flawlessly
>>28697131Every 1,000 miles on my race car.Usually 25,000mi on a street car
>>28697299I have had a diff chew up the spiders in a renault clio after a couple launches. For solid axle vehicles it's only the american stuff I have had issues with. A ram 1500 a Ford F150 and an E250. It seems mostly the pinion seals going and being ran dry and/or guys ripping one wheel peels all the fucking time
>>28697466>worst part is stupid ford/gm that dont have drain bolts and you have to take the cover off to get rid of the fluid. This is probably a major contibutor. And most of the time they don't sell gaskets for them becase they tell you to use RTV so it goes from a 10 mins change to an all day change while you wait for the shit to dry.
You guys don't mark shit down on your calenders or phones?Literally a once in a fatminute maintence interval. Cheaper than a new diff entirely for sure
>>28698019Just use a Lube-Locker gasket mang.Metal and rubber not shitty like the paper gaskets or waiting for RTV to cure
>>28697297>>28697277>>28697299>>28697466>>28697641>>28698007>>28698022You jerks keep saying "diff" wtf is a "diff"?
>>28698276You're a silly diff m8
>>28698276Differential, its only in rwd and awd cars.
>>28698374So front wheel drives dont have one?I dont need to worry about it? Since asking that (stupid) question, I figured it out, and if its to make sure one tyre rotates at a different speed as the other, depending on the curve of a turn, then why dont front wheel drives have one?
>>28698374Yes it's the differential. FWDs have them too but they're often built into the transmission housing.
>>28698374Some fwd cars have diffs with separate fluid too
>Axle oilWat
>>28698376Most fwd cars no, rarely you get them in high performance FWD cars. Tell us what you have.
>>28698376Cars have differentials, it doesn't matter the driveline. FF, MR, FR, RR. They all do because one wheel will rotate more or less than their opposite. The case here is explicitly whther ornot the differential is 'open', viscous, geared or clutch. If you don't know the different but care to, educate yourself. The default is 'open'. If one wheel rests on a pool of oil and the other on a tray of glue, the oil wheel will only spin and transfer power to only that wheel as the path of least resistance. This transfer of power is the subject of discussion.
>>28698389Axle, diff. Same thing in RWD. Just depends if you have IRS or not.
>>28698374>its only in rwd and awd cars.lollmao
>>28697255neverlike 2 months ago, clutch slave fluid as welli dont eat in my car
>>28697131mopar in their infinite wisdom had their 8-3/4 axles from the 60s not have any drain plugs, only a fill plug
>>28697255>When is the last time you flossed?5 minutes ago>When is the last time you flushed all your brake fluid?A week ago>Did you ever vacuum that french fry from under the seat?I've never had a French fry under any seats>You are now breathing voluntarily. You're retarded
