Massive problem in my area was the poors getting cars. My childhood house was located near a beachfront and the place was so quiet that you didn't even need a fence or a hedge. By time I could drive 8-10' walls had to go up with barbed wire and there were quite a few cars. These days you have to fight just to get out your gate the road is so jam packed that people just park in front of your gate and sometimes outright in the middle of the road. Also a metric ton of KFC trash everyweekend with rats everywhere.

Not entirely. Cars (and planes) were seen as the future of transport back in the 30’s through 60’s, and I can understand why. People who actually grew up in the old streetcar era weren’t too sad to see them go as most were old, loud and slow. It was the same story with passenger rail vs air travel as rail companies couldn’t wait to offload their failing passenger services onto the government via Amtrak.
In hindsight it was shortsighted and misguided but it’s not all oil and auto propaganda that brought this about.

I don't agree with the (suppose since I haven't read it) framing of the article linked in the OP, but most normies don't actually enjoy driving to work every day. Not a single person I've talked to actually enjoys driving to work every day either. Not entirely, but majorly. The car and oil industries campaigned for billions of taxpayer dollars to be spent on the interstate because that meant demand for their products. At the very beginning of the history of the automobile they campaigned for jaywalking to become a crime. In the present era auto magnates like Musk come up with smokescreen and lies in order to kill things like high speed rail that are present throughout the rest of the first world.

Even if they aren't always responsible, you always have to keep in mind who the biggest movers and shakers are.
